The City of Bloomington Township, as part of its workfare program, offers to its recipients and the public the Wellness Lifestyle Series. It is a series of classes focused on health and wellness from a holistic perspective. The Series is a direct response to the 2019 McLean County Community Health Needs Assessment that identified Access to Care, Behavioral Health (Mental Health and Substance Abuse), and Healthy Eating/Active Living (Exercise, Nutrition, Obesity, and Food Access/Insecurity) as priority needs for the community. The cyclical inflations of real estate values right before the 2008 housing crisis in the United States enticed mobile home park landowners, especially in California and Florida, to sell their land in the search for spectacular profits displacing many low-income residents. This thesis uses an engaged anthropological ethnographic approach to explore the struggle in organizing against neoliberal crony capitalist displacement in the South Florida metropolitan area. This article explores use of images and ideas of place to promote particular social and economic agendas within the regional context of Appalachia. Despite prevailing imageries of backwardness and isolation that adhere to the region, as well as recent history of often-bleak economic conditions, communities such as Huntington, West Virginia, are ideal places to observe inventive forms of community-building, place-making, and place-marketing that borrow from emerging cultural and economic models and stand in sharp contrast to a once dominant paradigm that encouraged capital investment by relying simply on tax breaks and the provision of cheap land and labor to attract …
