Lipan Apache Tribe Of Texas: Ethnic And Racial Identity, Ashley S. Leal

The findings presented in this study are based on a series of semi-structured interviews, focused on racial, ethnic and cultural identity, with 20 registered members of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas. Analysis of the interviews show that while members are spread across the country the basic cultural identity still remains the same: they are all cultural and tribal ambassadors to future generations and the world around them. Results indicate that interviewed members share the same aspirations of becoming federally recognized by the United States government, not for any type of benefits but to be seen as real Indians through …

The argument this research paper attempts to establish is that undocumented citizens have very little access to healthcare free from barriers that the United States government and healthcare facilities impose on them. The purpose of this thesis was to discover barriers that undocumented citizens encounter when accessing healthcare. Structured interviews were conducted with healthcare providers, administrators, and undocumented citizens in the Rio Grande Valley. Finances were determined by all interviewees to be the largest barrier to accessing healthcare. This issue requires further research and quantitative studies into a topic in healthcare that is scarcely studied and that needs immediate attention …

I began to investigate how local people use medicinal plants in Peru in the summer of 2007. It soon became apparent that many of the citizens of the small coastal town of Casma have an extensive knowledge of how to identify, prepare, and use these plants. During the summer of 2008, I did extensive research on the subject; however, focused more on the local knowledge of medicinal plants. In the fall of 2007, I began filming a course called Cosecha Voices, which centered on the migratory, farmworking experiences of South Texas students attending the University of Texas—Pan American. This thesis therefore, stems from my two-year collaborative experience with the Cosecha Voices project. I propose Cosecha Voices opened up an academic space for critical pedagogy and transculturation to intersect, creating a transcultural pedagogy. Transcultural pedagogy as praxis, centers on students' lived experiences, engaging educators and students in a transculturation of intersecting theories intertwined in oral performances, film ethnography, and testimonios as pedagogical practices and epistemologies. The Rio Grande Delta's archaeological record is mostly unknown. This paper attempts to assemble scattered resources into a concise and understandable chronology of the Delta’s prehistoric cultures. The prehistoric environment is discussed to clear up the misconception that modern day and prehistoric environments were identical. Archaeological contributions are covered to illustrate the difficulties and successes that 20th century archaeologists experienced. Chapter III discusses a few major sites from the region to give an example of what archaeologists have discovered, and what kinds of cultural remnants have been found. The focus of this thesis is to elaborate on the Early Horizon (900-200 B.C.) ceramic component at the site of Sechin Alto in the Casma Valley of Peru. The site of Sechin Alto consists of an enormous rectangular platform mound with four rectangular plazas and two circular courts and is considered to be part of the larger Sechin Alto Complex that spans 4 mile area (Fagan 1996:632). Sechin Alto is primarily an Initial Period (2150-1000 B.C.) site with an Early Horizon component superimposed above Initial Period material. Since the late 19 th century, anthropologists and archaeologists have attempted to explain and interpret an artistic phenomenon that flourished in the southeastern United States. For years explorations in that area unearthed exquisite examples of unique objects with bewildering motifs, and in 1945, Antonio Waring, Jr. and Preston Holder defined the art style as an expression of a ceremonial complex that swept through that region around the 15 th century. The interpretation took fifty years to evolve into the “Southeastern Ceremonial Complex,” and since then, new discoveries, methodologies and theories have changed the concept even further, and in the future, …

A collection of secondary (literature) information which revealed the relevant elements and conditions that surround the psychosocial aspects of family kinships were integrated to form the Kin-Psychosocial-Systems Model (KPSS). The KPSS Model is an investigative model (that includes a set of inter-related concepts, definitions, and propositions) which presents a systematic view of family kinships by specifying relationships among culture and family social systems, care-giving and socialization, and psychosocial development for the purpose of providing researchers with a means for explaining and predicting psychological and social phenomena related to the expression and enactment of family kinships.
