What does it mean to be middle class? The majority of Americans define themselves as members of the middle class, regardless of their wealth. There is an alternative to the narrowed public discourse of neoliberalism in the United States: democratic state theory in which concepts of citizen and common good dominate. This leads to proposals for specific policies to achieve a democracy of equality for the common good.
