An Econometric Analysis Of The Nebraska Livestock Friendly County Program, Brian Mills, Azzeddine Azzam, Kathleen Brooks, David Aiken

This article examines whether the Nebraska Livestock Friendly County Program (LFCP) has resulted in cattle and hog expansion in the state as intended. The analysis draws on the theory of long-run competitive equilibrium to specify econometric models that identify the determinants of cattle and hog farm numbers. Using county level census data, the econometric models were estimated with heteroscedasticity-consistent standard errors and corrected for multicollinearity using the variance inflation factor procedure. Results show an effect of LFCP on both cattle and hog expansion.

Livestock production in Nebraska is a very essential part of the state’s economy with cash receipts from all livestock and products valued at $11.9 billion in 2013 (NDA 2015b). The Livestock Friendly County Program (LFCP) was instituted by the Nebraska Legislature in 2003 to further promote livestock development in the state. This thesis examines whether the program has had its intended impact for both cattle and hog farms. The Impact Of Military Forts On Agricultural Investments On The Great Plains In 1880, Christopher Decker, David T. Flynn

We empirically investigate the relationship between agricultural development and proximity to military forts in Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado in 1880. Agricultural investments are substantially higher in counties where a military fort is present, suggesting that military forts stimulated agricultural development on the Great Plains. However, the reverse is not true; there is no statistical support for the notion that forts necessarily located in counties where substantial development was already occurring. Moreover, we found that while the presence of a military fort has the effect of increasing agricultural development, there is no evidence that such a presence sustained agricultural development.

Testing The Impact Of Corporate Farming Restrictions On The Nebraska Hog Industry, Holger Matthey, Jeffrey S. Royer

This paper evaluates the implications of corporate restrictions on production agriculture using the case of the Nebraska hog industry. Corporate farming restrictions prohibit the acquisition or operation of agricultural land by nonfamily farm or ranch corporations. A partial adjustment model with a variable coefficient of adjustment is used to study the policy change. The results of the study support the hypothesis that the corporate farming restrictions in Nebraska have reduced the Nebraska hog industry’s ability to adjust its inventory to target levels. A significant shift in inventory adjustment behavior is shown to coincide with the enactment of the corporate restrictions.

The land transfers in twelve counties in Nebraska for the period 1928 to 1933 have been studied and the findings are submitted in this bulletin. The data on which the study is based were obtained from records in the office of the Register of Deeds in each county and from other sources and include transfers which occurred during the period indicated. The counties included in the study are Boone, Cass, Cuming, Dakota, Dawes, Frontier, Gage, Hamilton, Harlan, Lancaster, Nuckolls, and Valley.
