Agribusiness

The dissemination of information by extension agents on dairy management practices used to control mastitis and the reception and use of that information by producers are investigated. Producers are surveyed to determine current practices used. The relationship between milk yield, somatic cell count, management practices, and producer and production characteristics is estimated. Subjective probabilities are elicited from "expert," extension agents, and producers concerning the impact and cost of various management practices. Subjective marginal value products and marginal input costs are computed and compared for the respondent groups. Stochastic dominance is used to rank the relative importance of the practices as …

Lenders' Perception Of Borrower Participation In Crop Insurance Programs, Burton Pflueger, Brian Schmiesing Sep 1987

Lenders' Perception Of Borrower Participation In Crop Insurance Programs, Burton Pflueger, Brian Schmiesing

Economics Staff Paper Series

The objective of this study was to provide insight to a crop insurance marketing question not previously studied – the viewpoint of lenders financing the premiums for Federal Crop Insurance. The viewpoint of lenders as to the extent of which their producers were participating in a crop insurance program could indicate the current and projected levels of participation, the extent to which lenders regard crop insurance programs as cost effective risk reducing strategies, and reasons for low participation. Thus, a survey of lenders was conducted to address the question of lenders' reaction to borrower participation in crop insurance programs.

A companion objective is to examine possibilities for electric rate structures to provide incentive for irrigators to use more electric energy for pumping irrigation water.

Developments In The Agricultural Sector During The Second Quarter Of 1987, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn Jun 1987

Developments In The Agricultural Sector During The Second Quarter Of 1987, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn

Economic and Financial Review

The widespread concern expressed about possible adverse effects of late arrival of rains abated slightly towards the end of the quarter. This was because in the south, middle belt and sudan savannah regions, the level of rain allowed early crops like maize, yam, groundnut and vegetables to be planted, nurtured and in some cases harvested. In the northern parts of the country, especially the sahelian zones, farmers experienced their first rains which facilitated land preparation activities as well as plan ting, especially in Kaduna, Bomo and Sokoto states. A total of 130, 952.35 tonnes of fertiliser were discharged at the …

Loan Management Controls: Economic Friend Or Foe Of The Irrigator?, Don Taylor Jun 1987

Loan Management Controls: Economic Friend Or Foe Of The Irrigator?, Don Taylor

Economics Staff Paper Series

Irrigator incomes are highly sensitive to yield losses from load management irrigation system power interruptions. Should irrigators therefore avoid load management control programs? Under the conditions examined in this case study the answer is probably "yes" if irrigators are unable to opt out of the load control program during the irrigation season. If discretion to opt out is permitted however the answer is clearly the opposite "no."

Machine Cost Estimates For Custom Rate Consideration, Thomas Dobbs, Ron Thaden, Dale Peckham Mar 1987

Machine Cost Estimates For Custom Rate Consideration, Thomas Dobbs, Ron Thaden, Dale Peckham

Economics Pamphlet Series

These tables of estimated operating and ownership costs for various machinery operations were compiled as part of research conducted under Agricultural Experiment Station Project H-076, entitled "Economics of Farming Systems Alternatives in Eastern South Dakota". Machinery cost estimates are needed in that project in order to determine fixed and variable costs of production for alternative crops, crop rotations, cultural practices, and tillage systems. The machine costs included in this pamphlet are derived primarily from Dr. Herbert Allen's Economics Pamphlet 153, Costs per Hour and per Acre for Machine Operations, last revised in March 1986. Some of the machinery prices in …

Developments In The Agricultural Sector During The First Quarter Of 1987, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn

Economic and Financial Review

Early rains in most southern parts of the country during the first quarter encouraged preliminary farming activities such as bush clearing and land tilling. In a number of areas, actual planting of some crops-maize, yam, okro, pepper and leaf vegetables- also began. In the northern parts, activity centred around dry-season farming involving the planting of wheat, rice and vegetables on irrigated lands. Other activities during the first quarter included harvesting and processing of cassava, rice; fruits and vegetables in the south, and maize, sorghum, millet and cotton in the northern states. A total of 99,295.1 tonnes of fertilizers were discharged …

Estimating The Value Of Water Quality Improvements In A Recreational Demand Framework, Nancy E. Bockstael, Catherine Kling, W. Michael Hanemann Jan 1987

Estimating The Value Of Water Quality Improvements In A Recreational Demand Framework, Nancy E. Bockstael, Catherine Kling, W. Michael Hanemann

Catherine Kling

With the advent of Executive Order 12291, policymakers involved in water quality regulation are increasingly interested in assessing the benefits of their programs. Several methods for valuing water quality improvements using recreational demand models have been developed by economists, most of which depend on observing recreationists visiting an array of sites with varying water quality and costs of access. In this paper, three general types of models are described: systems of demands, discrete choice models, and the hedonic travel cost approach; the latter two models are demonstrated using a common data set on water quality and swimming behavior in the …

Ambassador Clayton Yeutter United States Trade Representative Forty-Third Session Of The Gatt Contracting Parties Geneva, Switzerland December 1, 1987, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

I would like to speak to you this morning about the future of the world trading system. It seems appropriate, on the GATT's 40th birthday, to recognize its past achievements while also looking forward to its future-challenges. We must together develop a vision of the GATT that will serve the needs of the twenty-first century. Forty years ago, the legacy of a great depression and a world war was high import duties and restrictive quotas. World trade had shriveled. Recognizing this sorry state of affairs, concerned countries came together to establish a mechanism for reducing trade barriers and for carrying …
