On The Causal Dynamics Between Economic Growth, Renewable Energy Consumption, Co2 Emissions And Trade Openness: Fresh Evidence From Brics Countries, Maamar Sebri

Maamar Sebri

The current study investigates the causal relationship between economic growth and renewable energy consumption in the BRICS countries over the period 1971–2010 within a multivariate framework. The ARDL bounds testing approach to cointegration and vector error correction model (VECM) are used to examine the long-run and causal relationships between economic growth, renewable energy consumption, trade openness and carbon dioxide emissions. Empirical evidence shows that, based on the ARDL estimates, there exist long-run equilibrium relationships among the competing variables. Regarding the VECM results, bi-directional Granger causality exists between economic growth and renewable energy consumption, suggesting the feedback hypothesis, which can explain …

The Influence Of Parental Aspirations, Attitudes, And Engagement On Children's Very Low Food Security, Elizabeth T. Powers Aug 2013

The Influence Of Parental Aspirations, Attitudes, And Engagement On Children's Very Low Food Security, Elizabeth T. Powers

Elizabeth T Powers

Survey of Income and Program Participation data are used to investigate the relationship between parenting and children’s very low food security. Parenting is characterized along five domains (emotional outlook, support, education desires, activities with the child excluding meals, and television viewing rules). Food security definitions are obtained from questions in a special SIPP module that are based on the USDA’s core food security module. Graphical evidence indicates that parenting patterns differ distinctly for households experiencing various levels of food insecurity. Descriptive regression evidence suggests that some of the parenting attributes are significantly associated with children’s food insecurity, even controlling for …

《跨边界资源管理》书评, Luc Changlei Guo Aug 2013

《跨边界资源管理》书评, Luc Changlei Guo

Luc Changlei Guo

In discussing theoretical and analytical issues relating to cross-border resource management, this book explores a group of geographical, political, legal, economic and cultural factors that arise when political units (such as sovereign countries, dependent states and other administrative units) seek to maximize their political and economic interests while minimizing the resultant damage (e.g. resource degradation and preservation of the physical environment). The book is organized into three parts. Part one discusses the theoretical issues relating to cross-border development and the cross-border management of natural and environmental resources. Part two provides a variety of alternatives to advancing cross-border development as well …

The State Of Global Sustainable Food Production, Green Supply Chain Management And Decision Making: A Multidisciplinary Review, Renato Alas Msc Jul 2013

The State Of Global Sustainable Food Production, Green Supply Chain Management And Decision Making: A Multidisciplinary Review, Renato Alas Msc

Renato A Martins MSc

Abstract This review aims to promote a discussion about the development of a new global supply chain structure, as emergent economies such as the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) are coming to the scene. In this review we try to understand the dynamic processes of global food distribution and its logistics taking into account the impact of emergent economies. As XXI century society faces an increasing global population that imposes a greater challenge for self-sustainable food production, quality and distribution. How then we cope with such great supply demands? In support to UN-FAO goal of reducing the …

Improving Agricultural Productivity And Market Efficiency In Latin America And The Caribbean: How Icts Can Make A Difference?, Aparajita Goyal, Carolina González-Velosa

Aparajita Goyal

The rapid dissemination of ICTs in rural areas in LAC has been received with a lot of optimism, as these technologies are thought to be potentially effective tools of agricultural development. However, rigorous analyses of the impacts of ICTs on agriculture are still very scarce and lag behind the rapid penetration of these technologies. This paper is the first attempt to summarize recent findings from some of the few academic studies addressing this topic and complementing this analysis with anecdotal evidence and findings from case studies. Overall, the available evidence indicates that ICTs can play a major role in promoting …

Travelling In Cuba, Fathi Habashi Feb 2013

Travelling In Cuba, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Contact with Cuban scientists was established in 1986 when two researchers from Centro de Investigaciones para Industria Minero Metalurgica in Havana visited Laval University to get acquainted with research activities in the area of extractive metallurgy. This was followed in early 1987 by two more researchers from the same centre. Invitations were then received in late 1987, 1989, and 2008 to visit the nickel refineries in Cuba and to hold seminars at the University of Havana. The present report outlines these activities.

James T Struck

Economic Utopia Inventions as Observed Phenomenon-Success, Failure, Persistence Through History From Dawn of Mankind to Jesus to Thomas More to Pullman, Riverside and Eugenics Economic Utopia inventions have been tried from humanity's beginning to today with failure and success. I walked along Cottage Grove Avenue to look at the remains of the Pullman Sleeping Car Company near 111th Street in Chicago; part of what remains of the important Pullman Sleeping Car Company are boarded up buildings, beautiful red towers, nice windows, Hotel Florence, much writing, and a Pullman Historical Foundation and Pullman Historical Site. An Economic utopia invention was associated …

Neoliberalism And The Law Reassessing Historical Materialist Analysis Of The Law For The 21st Century, Justin Schwartz Jan 2013

Neoliberalism And The Law Reassessing Historical Materialist Analysis Of The Law For The 21st Century, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Historical materialism has been called in question by the triumph of neoliberalism and the fall of Communism. I show, by consideration of two examples, the 2008 crisis and recent Supreme Court campaign spending First Amendment jurisprudence, that neoliberalism instead vindicates the explanatory power of (non-mechanical and non-deterministic) historical materialism in accounting for a wide range of recent legal developments in legislation, executive (in)action, and judicial decision-making.

Cointegration Analysis Of Oil Prices And Consumer Price Index In South Africa Using Stata Software, Mphumuzi A. Sukati Mr Jan 2013

Cointegration Analysis Of Oil Prices And Consumer Price Index In South Africa Using Stata Software, Mphumuzi A. Sukati Mr

Mphumuzi A Sukati Mr

This paper investigates the concept of vector autoregression (VAR) and cointegration using a bivariate model of global oil prices and headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) in South Africa. The study aims to determine how much of inflation is driven by oil prices. Particular attention is paid to the theoretical underpinnings of cointergration analysis and the application of STATA software to undertake such analysis and perform test statistics. Contrary to the popular myth that a rise in global oil prices fuels inflation, this study has observed that global oil prices are not the drivers of inflation in South Africa. In this …

Form Follows Function: On The Interaction Between Real Estate Finance And Urban Spatial Structure, David S. Bieri Jan 2013

Form Follows Function: On The Interaction Between Real Estate Finance And Urban Spatial Structure, David S. Bieri

David S Bieri

The fundamental connection between the spatial development of cities and financial markets is a topic that has received little attention from either urbanists or economists. In this short piece, I argue that part of the post-crisis recovery is predicated on a multi-faceted understanding of the subtle causal linkages between financial flows and urban morphologies. Following a historical contextualization of my main argument, I speculate about the key channels through which the dialectical relationship between capital, its regimes of accumulation and its unequal spatial distribution affect the urban fabric. I identify two separate economic processes and historical developments that have co-defined …

Market Structure And The Cost Of Compliance With Environmental Regulation, Stuart Mcdonald Jan 2013

Market Structure And The Cost Of Compliance With Environmental Regulation, Stuart Mcdonald

Stuart McDonald

This paper analyses the expected level of non-compliance with environmental standards within in an oligopolistic industry. The paper departs from the previous literature on environmental compliance by allowing for the possibility of product differentiation. In doing this, the paper provides results quantifying the important role that strategic complements and substitutes have in determining both the relative degree of non-compliance and level of fines required to achieve both partial and universal compliance with environmental standards. The paper shows that under Bertrand competition it is relatively more difficult to achieve compliance with environmental standards than under Cournot competition, requiring larger fines to …
