Total Factor Productivity Growth In Indian Agriculture, Amarnath Tripathi

Sustaining productivity growth in agriculture continues to be critical for achieving food security, poverty reduction, and broad-based economic growth. The present study examined the performance of agricultural productivity in India during the last 37 years. The estimation showed that between 1969 and 2005, agricultural growth relied almost entirely on increased in conventional factors while growth in productivity was negative. For only initial periods of reforms, agricultural total factor productivity (TFP) growth is positive. Further, the study suggested that the relative decline in public investments in the agricultural sector is one of the prominent causes of slowdown of agricultural productivity growth.
