Energy-Aware Path Planning For Fixed-Wing Seaplane Uavs, Benjamin Atkinson Wolsieffer
Energy-Aware Path Planning For Fixed-Wing Seaplane Uavs, Benjamin Atkinson Wolsieffer
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are commonly used for remote sensing applications over water bodies, such as monitoring water quality or tracking harmful algal blooms. However, there are some types of measurements that are difficult to accurately obtain from the air. In existing work, water samples have been collected in situ either by hand, with an unmanned surface vehicle (USV), or with a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) UAV such as a multirotor. We propose a path planner, landing control algorithm, and energy estimator that will allow a low-cost and energy efficient fixed-wing UAV to carry out a combined remote …

Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Of Small Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines And Natural Gas Facility At An Urban University, Mary Kate Ranii
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fossil fuels generate the majority of the electricity in the United States and generate pollutants that negatively affect public and environmental health. Renewable energy projects serve as an opportunity for low-pollution and low-carbon electricity; small-scale projects, such as vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs), provide opportunities for generation in urban areas close to consumers. Researchers collected wind speed and directional data from a potential turbine installation site at Duquesne University to better demonstrate the potential benefits in an urban university location. The data was used in a life cycle assessment framework and a social review to better understand the value of …

Sustainability Analysis: Large-Scale Desalination Implications For Coastal California, Elizabeth H. Whitford
Master's Projects and Capstones
In response to prolonged drought, desalination is gaining popularity as an alternative water production method for fresh water. However, water desalting technology poses concerns; the process is energy intensive, creates brine waste, and has the potential to damage sensitive coastal ecosystems. Significant research is available on the technological, economic, and energy efficiency aspects of desalination, while only a small percentage of the current literature focuses on environmental impacts. This research analyzes the desalination literature holistically in terms of both energy consumption and environmental impacts by conducting 1) a historical and current state review of the sector, 2) a technology analysis …

Structural, Magnetic, Electrical, Pseudocapacitive, And Electrocatalytic Properties Of Bilayered Ruddlesden-Popper Oxides., Chandana Kananke-Gamage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ruddlesden Popper (RP) oxides are perovskite-derived functional materials with the general formula An-1Aʹ2BnO3n+1, where A/Aʹ is often a lanthanide or alkaline earth metal, and B is usually a transition metal. These materials contain perovskite-like connectivity, where BO6 units share apexes to form layers that are stacked above each other. The number of layers in each stack is represented by n in the above formula. The spaces between stacks are often occupied by lanthanide or alkaline-earth metals (Aʹ-site metals), which also reside in intra-stack spaces (A-site) between the octahedra. Oxide materials derived from perovskites have been studied for a wide range …

Exploring High Performance And Energy Efficient Graph Processing On Gpu, Robert P. Watling
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Parallel graph processing is central to analytical computer science applications, and GPUs have proven to be an ideal platform for parallel graph processing. Existing GPU graph processing frameworks present performance improvements but often neglect two issues: the unpredictability of a given input graph and the energy consumption of the graph processing. Our prototype software, EEGraph (Energy Efficiency of Graph processing), is a flexible system consisting of several graph processing algorithms with configurable parameters for vertex update synchronization, vertex activation, and memory management along with a lightweight software-based GPU energy measurement scheme. We observe relationships between different configurations of our software, …

In 2019, the Philadelphia Energy Solutions oil refinery closed after a dangerous explosion. But for years before the accident, members of the local environmental justice organization Philly Thrive had been advocating for its closure. Neighborhood residents who live near the refinery site had been complaining for years of health problems, ranging from asthma to cancer. “Enough is enough,” says Sylvia Bennett, 79, who lives in the Grays Ferry neighborhood near where the refinery is located. Her two daughters have both been diagnosed with cancer.
What will become of the refinery site remains to be seen as conversations between Hilco and …
Evaluation Of Energy Release From Wildfires Across The Elevation Gradient, Isabelle Rose Butler
Evaluation Of Energy Release From Wildfires Across The Elevation Gradient, Isabelle Rose Butler
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Wildfires are an integral process in vegetative terrestrial land which shape ecosystem functions. A warming climate, however, has increased the size and severity of fires with significant ecosystem and societal implications. Furthermore, warming has changed characteristics of wildfires enabling a median upslope advance of 252 m in high-elevation forest fires from 1984 to 2017, allowing wildfires to burn in areas that were previously too wet to burn frequently. This exposed an additional 81,500 square kilometers (11%) of western US montane forests to fires.
In this thesis, I test the hypothesis that wildfires burn more intensely in high-elevation mesic forests than …

In contemporary society, there are many different ways that energy is used in daily life. From applications that require a high energy density to long-term storage in a stable manner, the requirements for energy usage are diverse. Therefore, the greater the number of uses a designed material exhibits, the more practical it may be for wide-scale manufacture. Two areas of particular interest for energy applications are fuel cells (to generate energy) and supercapacitors (to store energy). To provide cheaper and more durable alternatives for energy storage, electrodes containing CoMoO4, NiMoO4, CoMoS4, NiMoS4, …
The Demotechnic Index Of Nations, 1980-2018, Camden Rainwater
The Demotechnic Index Of Nations, 1980-2018, Camden Rainwater
Geosciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Demotechnic Index (DI) is a non-dimensional metric that is the scalar multiple of energy consumption over and above that required for mere subsistence of a national population. Thus, the DI is a measure of energy efficiency that scales a country’s industrial energy consumption (called the total technological energy) and the energy required to meet the metabolic demand of the population (called the total metabolic energy). The DI was created by scientist John Vallentyne in 1982, refined in 1994, but never gained popularity or wide use as a sustainability metric. The objective of this thesis was to re-evaluate the DI …

Many-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms: Objective Reduction, Decomposition And Multi-Modality., Monalisa Pal Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) for Many-Objective Optimization (MaOO) problems are challenging in nature due to the requirement of large population size, difficulty in maintaining the selection pressure towards global optima and inability of accurate visualization of high-dimensional Pareto-optimal Set (in decision space) and Pareto-Front (in objective space). The quality of the estimated set of Pareto-optimal solutions, resulting from the EAs for MaOO problems, is assessed in terms of proximity to the true surface (convergence) and uniformity and coverage of the estimated set over the true surface (diversity). With more number of objectives, the challenges become more profound. Thus, better strategies have …

Energy Planning Model Design For Forecasting The Final Energy Consumption Using Artificial Neural Networks, Haidy Eissa
Theses and Dissertations
“Energy Trilemma” has recently received an increasing concern among policy makers. The trilemma conceptual framework is based on three main dimensions: environmental sustainability, energy equity, and energy security. Energy security reflects a nation’s capability to meet current and future energy demand. Rational energy planning is thus a fundamental aspect to articulate energy policies. The energy system is huge and complex, accordingly in order to guarantee the availability of energy supply, it is necessary to implement strategies on the consumption side. Energy modeling is a tool that helps policy makers and researchers understand the fluctuations in the energy system. Over the …

A 60- Year Record Of The Demotechnic Index Of States, 1960-2019, Gavin James Kellough
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A country’s dependency on energy resources can be interpreted through the calculation of energy indices. The Demotechnic Index (DI) was used to determine the trajectory of energy efficiency of each state in the United States over the period 1960-2019. The DI serves as a measure of the energy intensity of states and a proxy for energy sustainability of each state. The DI is the ratio of total energy use to total metabolic energy demand of a population. Mathematically, DI = (E_T-E_M)/E_M E_T represents the total energy used (metabolic energy + technological energy in kilojoules annually, kJ/y), while EM represents the basic …

Applied Symmetry For Crystal Structure Prediction, Scott William Fredericks
Applied Symmetry For Crystal Structure Prediction, Scott William Fredericks
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis presents an original open-source Python package called PyXtal (pronounced "pi-crystal") that generates random symmetric crystal structures for use in crystal structure prediction (CSP). The primary advantage of PyXtal over existing structure generation tools is its unique symmetrization method. For molecular structures, PyXtal uses an original algorithm to determine the compatibility of molecular point group symmetry with Wyckoff site symmetry. This allows the molecules in generated structures to occupy special Wyckoff positions without breaking the structure's symmetry. This is a new feature which increases the space of search-able structures and in turn improves CSP performance.
It is shown that …
