Proceedings Of The Cuny Games Conference 6.0, Robert O. Duncan, Joseph Bisz, Christina Boyle, Kathleen Offenholley, Maura A. Smale, Carolyn Stallard, Deborah Sturm

Publications and Research

The CUNY Games Network is an organization dedicated to encouraging research, scholarship and teaching in the developing field of games-based learning. We connect educators from every campus and discipline at CUNY and beyond who are interested in digital and non-digital games, simulations, and other forms of interactive teaching and inquiry-based learning. These proceedings summarize the CUNY Games Conference 6.0, where scholars shared research findings at a three-day event to promote and discuss game-based pedagogy in higher education. Presenters could share findings in oral presentations, posters, demos, or play testing sessions. The conference also included workshops on how to modify existing …

Cs + Sociology: Using Big Data To Identify And Understand Educational Inequality In America (1), Joseph Cleary, Elin Waring Jun 2019

Cs + Sociology: Using Big Data To Identify And Understand Educational Inequality In America (1), Joseph Cleary, Elin Waring

Open Educational Resources

This is the first of two lessons/labs for teaching and learning of computer science and sociology. Either and be used on their own or they can be used in sequence, in which case this should be used first.

Students will develop CS skills and behaviors including but not limited to: learning what an API is, learning how to access and utilize data on an API, and developing their R coding skills and knowledge. Students will also learn basic, but important, sociological principles such as how poverty is related to educational opportunities in America. Although prior knowledge of CS and sociology …

Support Of Teaching And Research In Hydroinformatics With R, Milan Cisty Aug 2014

Support Of Teaching And Research In Hydroinformatics With R, Milan Cisty

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

R is a free software programming language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. Polls and surveys show that R's popularity has increased substantially in recent years. The objective of this paper is to review features that make R a powerful environment for pre-processing and analyzing data from hydrology and water resources management, and for various other tasks such as hydrological processes modeling, time series analysis, trend analysis, GIS analysis of the watershed, geostatistics, extreme value analysis and various other tasks. This review paper will deal with the possibilities of applying the R programming language in water resources and hydrologic …

A Serious Gaming Approach For Serious Stakeholder Participation, Chengzi Chew, Anna Zabel, Gareth James Lloyd, Indika Gunawardana, Bertram Monninkhoff Aug 2014

A Serious Gaming Approach For Serious Stakeholder Participation, Chengzi Chew, Anna Zabel, Gareth James Lloyd, Indika Gunawardana, Bertram Monninkhoff

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Serious games are a category of games which are designed for a specific purpose other than for pure entertainment. It is not a new concept but serious games using real data, coupled with real time modelling and combining model results with social and economic factors opens up a new paradigm for active stakeholder participation. DHI and UNEP-DHI Centre initiated a project called Aqua Republica where a virtual world is developed which allows participants to develop a river basin and visualise the consequences of their decisions. The aim of this project is to raise awareness of the interconnectivity of water and …

A Virtual Lab Environment For Improving Students’ Understanding Of Infiltration And Runoff Processes, Tom Vanwalleghem, Cristina Aguilar, Miriam Carpintero, Antonio Espejo-Pérez, Juan Vicente Giráldez, María José Polo Aug 2014

A Virtual Lab Environment For Improving Students’ Understanding Of Infiltration And Runoff Processes, Tom Vanwalleghem, Cristina Aguilar, Miriam Carpintero, Antonio Espejo-Pérez, Juan Vicente Giráldez, María José Polo

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Infiltration of water in the soil is a key process in the hydrological cycle and its understanding is paramount for students of any course related to Hydrology. Different equations exist, which, in function of boundary conditions and the level of detail required in any particular case can become complex to solve in an analytical way. Water movement in the soil can be described by the Richards equation, but its solution requires numerical methods. Therefore, amongst the most used ways of calculating water infiltration are the Green and Ampt method, Horton’s equation, Philip’s equation and the Curve Number method. In all …

Interactive Web-Based Flood Simulation System As An Education Platform For Hydrological Concepts, Ibrahim Demir Aug 2014

Interactive Web-Based Flood Simulation System As An Education Platform For Hydrological Concepts, Ibrahim Demir

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Recent developments in web technologies make it easy to manage and visualize large data sets with general public. Novel visualization techniques and dynamic user interfaces allow users to create realistic environments, and interact with data to gain insight from simulations and environmental observations. The floodplain simulation system is a web-based 3D interactive flood simulation environment to create real world flooding scenarios. The simulation systems provides a visually striking platform with realistic terrain information, and water simulation. Students can create and modify predefined scenarios, control environmental parameters, and evaluate flood mitigation techniques. The web-based simulation system provides an environment for students …

An African-Centered Approach To Land Education, Salvotore Engel-Dimauro, Karanja Keita Carroll Jan 2014

An African-Centered Approach To Land Education, Salvotore Engel-Dimauro, Karanja Keita Carroll

Publications and Research

Approaches to environmental education which are engaging with place and critical pedagogy have not yet broadly engaged with the African world and insights from Africana Studies and Geography. An African-centered approach facilitates people's reconnection to places and ecosystems in ways that do not reduce places to objects of conquest and things to be exploited for profitability and individual gain. Such an approach offers effective critiques of settler coloniser perspectives on the environment and deeper understandings of the relationship between worldview and ecologically sensitised education. Through examples from Africana Studies and Geography, this article provides an introduction to how an African-centered …
