Synthesis Of Stimuli-Responsive Programmable Polymers Through Ring-Opening–Metathesis Cross-Metathesis (Rom-Cm), Courtney S. Dziewior, Sharon M. S. Strickland, Ping Li, Ken D. Shimizu Aug 2019

Synthesis Of Stimuli-Responsive Programmable Polymers Through Ring-Opening–Metathesis Cross-Metathesis (Rom-Cm), Courtney S. Dziewior, Sharon M. S. Strickland, Ping Li, Ken D. Shimizu

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Stimuli-responsive polymers can change their physical and/or chemical properties in response to external stimuli. These polymers have found great success in a number of important areas including molecular gels and biomedical engineering, as well as success in applications such as targeted drug delivery and biosensors. We have been working toward the development of programmable polymers that remember the response after a stimulus is withdrawn. To this end, we set out to synthesize specific functional monomers. While different types of reactions could potentially result in the desired target monomer, we studied the ring-opening metathesis–cross-metathesis reaction (ROM-CM). Previous work of ours synthesized …

The Effect Of Confinement On Fe2o3 Nanoparticles In Free Diffusion And With A Horizontal Magnetic Field, Patrick Simonson, Ashely Rice, Gabrielle Seymore, Ana Oprisan Aug 2019

The Effect Of Confinement On Fe2o3 Nanoparticles In Free Diffusion And With A Horizontal Magnetic Field, Patrick Simonson, Ashely Rice, Gabrielle Seymore, Ana Oprisan

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

We investigated the magnitude of the confinement effect's influence on the free diffusion of Iron Oxide Fe2O3 in pure water contained in cells of different volumes and also that of an applied magnetic field. A shadowgraph apparatus consisting of a super luminous diode (SLD) source, a CCD camera, and achromatic lenses was used to record and analyze the changing indices of refraction due to the presence of concentration-driven fluctuations as the solution diffuses. Extracted frames from this recording were processed through a Differential Dynamic Algorithm (DDA) that determined the dynamics of the process, such as the structure …

Studying Near-Critical And Super-Critical Fluids In Reduced Gravity, Christian Hawkins, Ana Oprisan, Carole Lecoutre-Chabot, Yves Garrabos, Daniel Beysens Aug 2019

Studying Near-Critical And Super-Critical Fluids In Reduced Gravity, Christian Hawkins, Ana Oprisan, Carole Lecoutre-Chabot, Yves Garrabos, Daniel Beysens

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Critical and supercritical fluids have a variety of applications, from use as machine lubricants in high pressure or high temperature environments to the manufacturing of materials such as aerogel. The optical properties of fluids undergo rapid changes near the critical point resulting in a rapid increase in turbidity known as critical opalescence. These optical changes can be used to probe the universality of critical behavior. As a fluid approaches the critical point, the compressibility rapidly increases. In a gravitational field, this increase in compressibility leads to near-critical fluids stratifying by phase and density, making it difficult to observe the optical …

The Relationship Between Conductor And Discriminant Of An Elliptic Curve Over Q, Nico Adamo Aug 2019

The Relationship Between Conductor And Discriminant Of An Elliptic Curve Over Q, Nico Adamo

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Saito (1988) establishes a relationship between two invariants associated with a smooth projective curve, the conductor and discriminant. Saito defined the conductor of an arbitrary scheme of finite type using p-adic etale cohomology. He used a definition of Deligne for the discriminant as measuring defects in a canonical isomorphism between powers of relative dualizing sheaf of smooth projective curves. The researcher in this paper uses the fact that this relationship is analogous to that of conductor to discriminant in the case of elliptic curves, Saito’s result, as well as analysis of data on conductors and discriminants to determine whether patterns …

Integrating Optimized High-Speed Autonomous Control Systems, James V. Johnson,, Alfred Degennaro, Kenneth Gregson Jan 2019

Integrating Optimized High-Speed Autonomous Control Systems, James V. Johnson,, Alfred Degennaro, Kenneth Gregson

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

While autonomous vehicles are growing in popularity, there exists a tradeoff between control and speed. With control directly affecting safety of a vehicle, it is prioritized at the detriment of speed. However, with speed being essential to emergency responses, methods are required for optimizing speed while retaining high accuracy. This research project aims to convert a proportional integral derivative controller, visual servoing system, and potential field navigator into Robot Operating System (ROS) nodes, integrate them with the Rapid Autonomous Complex-Environment Competing Ackermann-steering Robot (RACECAR) developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, tune them for speed, and integrate them together to …

The Effect Of Vinegar And Tap Water On The Release Of Nickel In Grade 304 Stainless Steel Cups, Caroline Quan Jan 2019

The Effect Of Vinegar And Tap Water On The Release Of Nickel In Grade 304 Stainless Steel Cups, Caroline Quan

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Consumption of nickel rich liquids and foods pose a risk to human health, possibly causing reactions such as dermatitis. This study examines the amount of nickel that leaches out of grade 304 stainless steel cups with respect to time. The hypothesis of this experiment is that if given enough time, the liquids will react to the nickel in the stainless steel cups, and then nickel will leach out into the cup’s contents. The null hypothesis being that if the cups, since they are not given enough time and/or do not react to the nickel in the stainless steel cups, will …
