Why Does Ramanujan, The Man Who Knew Infinity, Matter?, Ken Ono
Why Does Ramanujan, The Man Who Knew Infinity, Matter?, Ken Ono
Dalrymple Lecture Series
Dr. Ken Ono is the Thomas Jefferson Professor of Mathematics at the University of Virginia, the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Mathematics at Emory University, and the vice president of the American Mathematical Society. He is an associate producer of the film The Man Who Knew Infinity starring Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons about Srinivasa Ramanujan, a self-trained two-time college dropout who left behind three notebooks filled with equations that mathematicians are still trying to figure out today. Ramanujan claimed that his ideas came to him as visions from an Indian goddess. This lecture is about why Ramanujan matters. The answers …

A Collection of Open Access Books and Monographs
Most math books for college students start out reviewing “rules” in an introductory chapter. The review usually goes like this: here are the “rules”, here are some examples of using those “rules” and here are 10 to 100 exercises where you will practice using those “rules” and then you’ll be tested on them.
The problem with that approach, even if it seems familiar and comfortable to you, is that people learn, in part, by connecting new ideas and perspectives to what they already understand, and correcting any previous misunderstandings. This process takes time and effort. Memorizing rules to quickly retrieve …
Linear Algebra And Applications: An Inquiry-Based Approach, Feryal Alayont, Steven Schlicker
Linear Algebra And Applications: An Inquiry-Based Approach, Feryal Alayont, Steven Schlicker
Open Textbooks
Linear Algebra and Applications: An Inquiry-Based Approach provides a novel open-source inquiry-based learning approach to linear algebra. The emphasis is on active learning and developing intuition through investigation of examples. The content is introduced through inquiry-based activities, starting with experimentation with hands-on concrete examples and continuing on to developing a deep understanding of the topics through working with conceptual questions. To provide motivation and context for the linear algebra content, the text includes 35 real-life applications projects. While working through all of this material in the text, readers are actively DOING mathematics instead of being passive learners. Although it is …

All Finding Aids
This collection is a 50-page folio journal with the first entry on January 1, 1865 and the last entry on July 2, 1865. There are scattered math equations throughout the journal. The first four pages are instruction based about compass corrections, other navigational tasks, and deck work related to sails. In almost every entry, the day of the week is written, the time, the weather, the location of the ship Bradbury was aboard that day (mostly the U.S.S. Rhode Island), his duties for that day, leisure activities, and his personal health for that day (ex. good, fair, starving). On the …
Active Prelude To Calculus, Matthew Boelkins
Active Prelude To Calculus, Matthew Boelkins
Open Textbooks
Active Prelude to Calculus is designed for college students who aspire to take calculus and who either need to take a course to prepare them for calculus or want to do some additional self-study. Many of the core topics of the course will be familiar to students who have completed high school. At the same time, we take a perspective on every topic that emphasizes how it is important in calculus. This text is written in the spirit of Active Calculus and is especially ideal for students who will eventually study calculus from that text. The reader will find that …

Logics For Rough Concept Analysis, Giuseppe Greco, Peter Jipsen, Krishna Manoorkar, Alessandra Palmigiano, Apostolos Tzimoulis
Logics For Rough Concept Analysis, Giuseppe Greco, Peter Jipsen, Krishna Manoorkar, Alessandra Palmigiano, Apostolos Tzimoulis
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Taking an algebraic perspective on the basic structures of Rough Concept Analysis as the starting point, in this paper we introduce some varieties of lattices expanded with normal modal operators which can be regarded as the natural rough algebra counterparts of certain subclasses of rough formal contexts, and introduce proper display calculi for the logics associated with these varieties which are sound, complete, conservative and with uniform cut elimination and subformula property. These calculi modularly extend the multi-type calculi for rough algebras to a ‘nondistributive’ (i.e. general lattice-based) setting.
A Self-Contained Course In The Mathematical Theory Of Statistics For Scientists & Engineers With An Emphasis On Predictive Regression Modeling & Financial Applications., Tim Smith
Open Access Textbooks
Preface & Acknowledgments
This textbook is designed for a higher level undergraduate, perhaps even first year graduate, course for engineering or science students who are interested to gain knowledge of using data analysis to make predictive models. While there is no statistical perquisite knowledge required to read this book, due to the fact that the study is designed for the reader to truly understand the underlying theory rather than just learn how to read computer output, it would be best read with some familiarity of elementary statistics. The book is self-contained and the only true perquisite knowledge is a solid …

Cgi (Computer Generated Imagery) Matrix Multiplication Activity, Cynthia J. Huffman Ph.D.
Open Educational Resources - Math
Many students are motivated by real world applications of mathematics, and most students are familiar with the term CGI from watching movies and playing video games. This particular activity ties matrix multiplication to CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). It has been used successfully with high school students in an Algebra II course who had just learned how to do matrix multiplication, middle school and high school students (some of whom were seeing matrix multiplication for the first time) attending a special Math Day on a university campus, and with College Algebra students (during a unit about matrices).

The Game Of Ur: An Exercise In Strategic Thinking And Problem Solving And A Fun Math Club Activity, Cynthia J. Huffman Ph.D.
Open Educational Resources - Math
In this Open Educational Resource activity, students learn a little about the history of the Royal Game of Ur, the first board game, and get to practice critical thinking and problem solving by playing the game. Instructions are given along with a template for the game and game pieces and tetrahedral die.
What Is The Shape Of A Traditional Rapanui House On Easter Island? A Multicultural Mathematical Activity Involving Ellipses, Cynthia J. Huffman Ph.D.
What Is The Shape Of A Traditional Rapanui House On Easter Island? A Multicultural Mathematical Activity Involving Ellipses, Cynthia J. Huffman Ph.D.
Open Educational Resources - Math
The Rapanui people of the island Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, at one time had a system of “writing” called Rongorongo. Unfortunately, the ability to read Rongorongo has since been lost. So currently archaeology and oral tradition are the only available sources for information about the early people of the island. Oral tradition states that the houses originally had upside down canoes for their roofs, and thus they are called hare paenga, or in English, boat-houses. In the literature, these boat-houses are said to be elliptical in shape. In this activity, we will investigate the shape of archaeological …
