Carbide-derived Carbon (CDC) has been demonstrated to be an excellent electrode material for electrochemical devices including supercapacitors due to its chemical and electrochemical stability, large specific surface area and controllable pore size and morphology. Currently, CDC is prepared from metal carbides by chlorination in a chlorine gas atmosphere at temperatures of 350°C or higher. In this paper, conversion using electrochemical methods is reported, which can be achieved by oxidizing vanadium carbides (VC or V2C) in aqueous solutions at room temperature and a mild electrode potential to prepare CDC thin film as electrode materials for “on-chip” supercapacitiors. It was found that …

Template Induced Fabrication Of Nitrogen Doped Carbon Sheets As Electrode Materials In Supercapacitors, Tao Huang, Guang-Zhi Tao, Chong-Qing Yang, Deng Lu, Lie Ma, Dong-Qing Wu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Due to the good electrical conductivity, high specific surface area, and excellent chemical/mechanical stability, carbon nanomaterials with two-dimensional morphology have gradually become the hot topic of the research on supercapacitors. Herein, we report for the first time the fabrication of nitrogen doped carbon sheets (NCSs). In our approach, the sheet-like magnisum aluminum (MgAl) layered double hydroxide was used as the hard template, which was mixed with o-phenylene diamine and iron chloride. The following thermal treatment could render the polymerization and carbonization of o-phenylene diamine. The NCSs with ordered hexagonal architectures were formed by final etching process of the thermally treated …

An Aqueous Zn-Ion Capacitor, Jing-Wen Zhao, Jia-Jia Li, Peng-Xian Han, Guang-Lei Cui

Journal of Electrochemistry

We first present a new aqueous zinc-ion (Zn-ion) capacitor based on vanadium pentoxide ( V2O5) cathode, activated carbon (AC) anode, and 2 mol·L-1 zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(TfO)2) electrolyte. The Zn-ion capacitor possesses a wide electrochemical window of 1.4 V, good rate capability and cycling stability. The XRD data demonstrates that the Zn2+ ion serving as the charge carrier could be reversibly intercalated into the V2O5. This capacitor delivered a power density of 181 W·kg-1 and an energy density of 4.5 Wh·kg-1 at 1000 mA·g-1. This …

Porous Carbon Materials Produced By Koh Activation For Supercapacitor Electrodes, Jiang-Lin Ye, Yan-Wu Zhu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Porous carbon materials with high specific surface area and excellent conductivity have wide applications in supercapacitor electrodes. Much effort has been made to synthesize and tailor the microstructures of porous carbon materials via various activation procedures (physical and chemical activations). In particular, the chemical activation using potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an activating reagent is promising because of the well-defined micropore size distribution and ultrahigh specific surface area up to 3000 m2·g-1 of the resulting porous carbons. Based mainly on the previous works taken by the authors and collaborators in the field, we have summarized the activation mechanism …

Cobalt-Doped Ceria/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite As An Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalyst And Supercapacitor Material, Shaikh Parwaiz, Kousik Bhunia, Ashok Kumar Das, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, Debabrata Pradhan

Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan

Design and development of highly active and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst to replace Pt- and Pt-based materials are present challenges in fuel cell research including direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). The methanol crossover and its subsequent oxidation at the cathode is another unwanted issue that reduces the efficiency of DMFC. Herein we report cobalt-doped ceria (Co-CeO2) as a promising electrocatalyst with competent ORR kinetics mainly through a four-electron reduction pathway, and it surpasses Pt/C by a great margin in terms of stability and methanol tolerance. The Co-CeO2 nanoparticles of diameter 4–7 nm were uniformly …

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Bio-based polyol for rigid polyurethane (PU) foams and porous structured carbon as an electrode material for supercapacitors were synthesized from readily available biowaste precursor (orange peel) as an alternative to currently used petroleum-based starting materials. Synthesized bio-based polyols were characterized using FTIR, GPC, hydroxyl number, and viscosity measurements. These analyses indicated that intended bio-based polyol was obtained via thiol-ene chemistry with a high yield. Rigid PU foams prepared from bio-based polyol exhibited density around 35 kg/m3, maintained a regular cell structure with uniform cell distribution, closed cell content over 90%, and excellent compressive strength of ~230 kPa, suggesting …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Molybdenum Sulfide And For Hydrogen Evolution Reaction And Supercapacitor Applications, Zhuo Wang

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

To meet the constantly rising requirement of energy other than traditional fossil fuel and environment protection, it is a perfect time to development low cost, and efficient materials for clean energy production. Hydrogen generation by water splitting is one of the cleanest ways to produce cheaper energy. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the key steps in water splitting process. Ideally, the thermodynamic potential for HER should be at 0 V (vs. SHE). However, without an efficient catalyst, this reaction occurred at higher potential, called overpotential. A good HER catalyst is needed to lower the overpotential and hence to …

Electrochemical Synthesis Of Porous Polyaniline Electrodes Using Hkust-1 As A Template And Their Electrochemical Supercapacitor Property, Qiong Luan, Chun-Feng Xue, Hong-Ye Zhu, Fu-Juan Yang, Xu-Li Ma, Xiao-Gang Hao

Journal of Electrochemistry

Excellent electrode plays vital important role in the performance of supercapacitors. Polyaniline (PANI) with good conductivity is often used to prepare electrode. However, its available surface is limited and results in a poor supercapacitance in many cases. It is desirable to fabricate an electrode containing electroactive PANI with high surface area deriving from its porous structure. Here, the metal-organic framework (MOF) material with high surface area was selected as a hard template for synthesizing porous PANI. Microporous PANI composite electrodes (Micro-PANI/CC) were fabricated by depositing aniline on to carbon cloth (CC) pre-coated with MOF material of HKUST-1 using a unipolar …

Flexible Polycaprolactone (Pcl) Supercapacitor Based On Reduced Graphene Oxide (Rgo)/Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (Swnts) Composite Electrodes, Hyeon Taek Jeong, Yong-Ryeol Kim, Byung Chul Kim

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) composites are coated onto the polycaprolactone (PCL) substrate via spray coating technique to prepare a flexible supercapacitor. The electrochemical properties of the flexible PCL supercapacitor as a function of bending cycles and angles are evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and galvanostatic charge/discharge tests. The EIS and charge/discharge curves of the flexible PCL supercapacitor exhibit capacitive behavior even after prolonged bending cycles up to 500. The highest capacitance value of the unbent PCL supercapacitor is 52.5 F g-1 which retained 65% after 500 bending with 6000th galvanostatic charge/discharge cycles.
