FLPMA Turns 40 (October 21)

Presenter: John D. Leshy, Sunderland Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus, U.C. Hastings College of the Law

36 slides

This session traces the history of FLPMA including, among other things, its legislative, administrative, and historical antecedents, including for example, the Public Land Law Review Commission’s 1970 report, One Third of Our Nation’s Lands. It then considers FLPMA’s unique public lands policies and requirements and how they are reflected in the BLM’s management of public lands today.

Reconstructing Late Pleistocene And Holocene Paleoenvironments Using Playa-Lunette System Sediments Within The Harney Basin Of Southeastern Oregon, Usa, Joe Collins

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Paleoenvironmental investigations of the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene in the Harney Basin of eastern Oregon have been limited to date. This Dissertation investigates and links the stratigraphy of Rimrock Draw Rockshelter (35HA3855) (RDR) and two surrounding playas, Rimrock Lake and Hay Lake, located on the western margin of the Harney Basin, in order to identify paleoenvironmental shifts during the last ~20 kyr. An emphasis also is given to demonstrating the potential for playas in the Harney Basin to record changes in paleoclimate, as well as the application of multivariate statistics to interpret paleoenvironments from sedimentary grain size data. Stratigraphy …

The Role Of Fire In Montane Forest Environments In The Willamette National Forest, Oregon, Tamara G. Cox Jan 2016

The Role Of Fire In Montane Forest Environments In The Willamette National Forest, Oregon, Tamara G. Cox

All Master's Theses

High-resolution charcoal and pollen analyses were used to reconstruct a 16,000-year-long fire and vegetation history of the Blair Lake watershed in the Willamette National Forest of Oregon. The record shows that during the late glacial period, overall fire frequency was relatively low. Pinus and Abies were the dominant vegetation, along with Pseudotsuga and Alnus, suggesting that an open-canopy conifer forest developed soon after the area was glacier free. Fire frequency increased during the early Holocene. Warmer and drier conditions are reflected in the herbaceous vegetation, Artemisia, Poaceae, and Cyperaceae, suggesting that meadows or other openings were part of …
