A mathematical model was developed based on the irreversible thermodynamic principle and hydro- dynamic calculation to predict the rejection of N-nitrosamines by spiral-wound reverse osmosis (RO) membrane systems. The developed model is able to accurately describe the rejection of N-nitrosamines under a range of permeate flux and system recovery conditions. The modelled N-nitrosamine rejections were in good agreement with values obtained experimentally using a pilot-scale RO filtration system. Simulation from the model revealed that an increase in permeate flux from10 to 30L/m2h led to an increase in the rejection of low molecular weight N-nitrosamines such as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) (from31% to …

Layered rare earth compounds in the RMn2X2 series (R = rare-earth; X = Ge, Si) are of interest for potential cooling applications at lower temperatures as they enable the structural and magnetic behavior to be controlled via substitution of R, Mn, and X atoms on the 2a, 4d, and 4e sites respectively. We continue investigations of the Pr1−xYxMn2Ge2 magnetic phase diagram as functions of both composition and Mn-Mn spacing using X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetization and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. Pr1−xYxMn2Ge2 exhibits an extended region of re-entrant ferromagnetism around x ∼ 0.5 with re-entrant ferromagnetism at inline image for Pr0.5Y0.5Mn2Ge2. …

In this study we present the synthesis of a new theranostic system consisting of a core-shell structured nanoceramic-drug conjugate that can potentially combine chemotherapeutic, targeting, diagnostic and radio dose enhancing features in cancer treatment. The conjugate is made of α-Bi2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) which were first coated with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) to form a core-shell structure and then attached with methotrexate (MTX) through amidation between the amine moieties on the shell and the carboxylic acid groups on MTX. The poor response of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) to red and infrared light is a significant impediment to the realization of higher photocurrents and hence higher efficiencies. Photon up-conversion by way of triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA-UC) is an attractive technique for using these otherwise wasted low energy photons to produce photocurrent, while not interfering with the photoanodic performance in a deleterious manner. Further to this, TTA-UC has a number of features, distinct from other reported photon up-conversion technologies, which renders it particularly suitable for coupling with DSC technology. We report on the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy v2 of dielectrons (e+e- pairs) at mid-rapidity from √ˢᶰᶰ = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions with the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), presented as a function of transverse momentum pT for different invariant-mass regions. In the mass region Mee < 1.1 GeV/c2 the dielectron v2measurements are found to be consistent with expectations from π0, η, ω, and Φ decay contributions. Exclusive neutral-pion electroproduction (ep → e'p'π0 was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections d4σ/dtdQ2dxBdΦπ and structure functions σT+ ϵσL, σTT, and σLT as functions of t were obtained over a wide range of Q2 and xB. The data are compared with Regge and handbag theoretical calculations. Analyses in both frameworks find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. For the Regge analysis it is found …

J/Ψ Production At Low Pᵀ In Au + Au And Cu + Cu Collisions At √ˢᴺᴺ = 200 Gev With The Star Detector, L. Adamczyk, J. K. Adkins, G. Agakishiev, S. Bültmann, I. Koralt, Star Collaboration

The J/ψ pT spectrum and nuclear modification factor (RAA) are reported for pT < 5 GeV/c and |y| < 1 from 0% to 60% central Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at √ˢᴺᴺ = 200 GeV at STAR. A significant suppression of pT - integrated J/ψ production is observed in central Au + Au events. The Cu + Cu data are consistent with no suppression, although the precision is limited by the available statistics. RAA in Au + Au collisions exhibits a strong suppression at low transverse momentum and gradually increases with pT. The data are compared to high-pT STAR results and previously published BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider results. Comparing with model calculations, it is found that the invariant yields …
