The use of standards-based grading in American public schools is increasing, offering students, parents, and teachers a new way of measuring and communicating about student achievement and performance. Parents indicate an appreciation for this method of grading, and students at the elementary grades (K-6) have improved standardized test scores in reading and math as a result of its implementation. PART 1: CHARACTERIZATION OF COMPLEX ORGANICS BY RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY AND GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY.

The analytical chemistry component of this thesis focused on instrumentation and methods to address challenges in art conservation, particularly the identification, quantitation, and reactivity of a set of representative varnishes and their degradation products. Methods for characterizing varnishes are of great interest to art conservators to restore art work more accurately. A database was created as a means to identify and quantify the composition of aged varnishes. Fourier Transform (FT)-Raman Spectroscopy was used to study common organic acids found in varnishes. Visual programming tools and mobile device applications are a natural tool to engage university students; but, are they effective in teaching quantitative thinking skills to non computer science majors? Answering this question can be based on careful assessment of the learning outcomes.

This paper reports the results from teaching over 100 students mobile app development with App Inventor in a university core course. Results were measured using an assessment process motivated by Bloom's Taxonomy that included student self assessment, ratings by instructors, and comparisons of the two results. In this study, we offer a new “prompt-less” instrument for measuring students’ habits of mind in the field of quantitative literacy. The instrument consists of a series of questions about a newspaper article the students read. The questions do not explicitly solicit quantitative information; students’ habit of mind is assessed by their use of quantitative reasoning even when it is not asked for. Students’ answers were graded according to a modified version of the Quantitative Literacy Assessment Rubric (QLAR) published in this journal (vol. 4, issue 2). Using A Media-Article Approach To Quantitative Reasoning As An Honors Course: An Exploratory Study, Stuart Boersma, Dominic Klyve

In this study, we investigate student performance on a basic skills assessment of percentages and ratios in two cohorts of students: the general (non-STEM) student body (cohort G) and (non-STEM) honors students (cohort H). Both cohorts used a media-article approach to the study of quantitative reasoning. A pre- and a post-intervention assessment were administered with a two-week intervention period consisting of critical analyses of the use of percentages and ratios in media articles. Using non-parametric techniques, no statistically significant improvement was measured in cohort G while cohort H students showed statistically significant improvement on several items.

The purpose of this research is to uncover best practices to create competent proof writers. Studies have shown the best setting to do this is in the high school geometry classroom. Throughout a yearlong study of geometry, students were exposed to theorems and their demonstrations. Despite constant exposure, students were still unable to produce their own proof of propositions.
