The Lakes And Streams Project: A Curriculum For Elementary And Middle Grades On A Local Environmental Issue, Linda Mae Alice Gregory

Theses Digitization Project

This project covers the environmental issues of the proposed Lakes and Streams Project for the City of San Bernardino. The water history of San Bernardino, from the hot springs to the development of the current municipal water system, is also detailed. Two curriculum units teach students how to use environmental issue analysis skills. One focuses on the water history of San Bernardino and is aimed at grades three to five. The other immerses middle grade students directly into the Lakes and Streams issue.

A Reinterpretation Of The Small Captorhinid Reptile Captorhinikos Parvus Olson As A New Genus, Reanalysis Of Its Cranial Anatomy, And A Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Basal Reptilian Family Captorhinidae, Gavan Mcbride Albright Jan 2003

A Reinterpretation Of The Small Captorhinid Reptile Captorhinikos Parvus Olson As A New Genus, Reanalysis Of Its Cranial Anatomy, And A Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Basal Reptilian Family Captorhinidae, Gavan Mcbride Albright

Theses Digitization Project

The cranial anatomy of the basal captorhinid reptile Captorhinikos parvus (Reptilia, Captorhinidae), is reinterpreted here based on analysis of a group of new specimens recovered subsequent to its original diagnosis as well as further analysis of the original specimens utilized in E.C. Olson's original characterization of the species. Structural features inconsistent with the generic description suggest the redefinition of C. parvus as a new genus, Rhodotheratus parvus. Analyses of basal members and selected derived members support the characterization of Rhodotheratus as a distinct taxon.

Unified Modeling Language Class Diagram Translator For The Online Design Pattern Library System, Kaiyan Li

Theses Digitization Project

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the successor to the wave of object-oriented analysis and design (OOA&D) methods that appeared in the late '80s and early '90s. The class diagram is one of the most useful diagrams in UML. The class diagram technique has become truly central within object-oriented methods.

The Window Least Mean Square Error Algorithm, Anna Semenovna Degtyarena Jan 2003

The Window Least Mean Square Error Algorithm, Anna Semenovna Degtyarena

Theses Digitization Project

In order to improve the performance of LMS (least mean square) algorithm by decreasing the amount of calculations this research proposes to make an update on each step only for those elements from the input data set, that fall within a small window W near the separating hyperplane surface. This work aims to describe in detail the results that can be achieved by using the proposed LMS with window learning algorithm in information systems that employ the methodology of neural network for the purposes of classification.

Ideals, Varieties, And Groebner Bases, Joyce Christine Ahlgren Jan 2003

Ideals, Varieties, And Groebner Bases, Joyce Christine Ahlgren

Theses Digitization Project

The topics explored in this project present and interesting picture of close connections between algebra and geometry. Given a specific system of polynomial equations we show how to construct a Groebner basis using Buchbergers Algorithm. Gröbner bases have very nice properties, e.g. they do give a unique remainder in the division algorithm. We use these bases to solve systems of polynomial quations in several variables and to determine whether a function lies in the ideal.

Taxonomy Of Synchronization And Barrier As A Basic Mechanism For Building Other Synchronization From It, Pauline Braginton Jan 2003

Taxonomy Of Synchronization And Barrier As A Basic Mechanism For Building Other Synchronization From It, Pauline Braginton

Theses Digitization Project

A Distributed Shared Memory(DSM) system consists of several computers that share a memory area and has no global clock. Therefore, an ordering of events in the system is necessary. Synchronization is a mechanism for coordinating activities between processes, which are program instantiations in a system.

Hyperbolic Transformations On Cubics In H², Frank S. Marfai Jan 2003

Hyperbolic Transformations On Cubics In H², Frank S. Marfai

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this thesis is to study the effects of hyperbolic transformations on the cubic that is determined by locus of centroids of the equilateral triangles in H² whose base coincides with the line y=0, and whose common vertex is at the origin. The derivation of the formulas within this work are based on the Poincaré disk model of H², where H² is understood to mean the hyperbolic plane. The thesis explores the properties of both the untransformed cubic (the original locus of centroids) and the transformed cubic (the original cubic taken under a linear fractional transformation).

A Parallel Algorithm To Solve The Mathematical Problem "Double Coset Enumeration Of S₂₄ Over M₂₄", Elena Yavorska Harris

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis presents and evaluates a new parallel algorithm that computes all single cosets in the double coset M₂₄ P M₂₄, where P is a permutation on n points of a certain cycle structure, and M₂₄ is the Mathieu group related to a Steiner system S(5, 8, 24) as its automorphism group. The purpose of this work is not to replace the existing algorithms, but rather to explore a possibility to extend calculations of single cosets beyond the limits encountered when using currently available methods.
