A simple mathematical model of a two-dimensional universe, called the Poincaré Upper Halfplane, illustrates the possibility of a universe with an unattainable edge. In this article, I describe this model -a famous example of a noneuclidean geometry-and explain how conversations with an analytic number theorist led me to create wallpaper patterns for its inhabitants. These are interesting not only for their high "Gee whiz!"factor, but also as a window for observing the features of this unusual geometry.

We have experimentally studied a model system that demonstrates the crossover from a superconductor that is dominated by phase fluctuations, to one in which the amplitude of the order parameter is the controlling influence on Tc. This model system is comprised of two-dimensional granular Pb with an overlayer of Ag. The system displays many aspects of the phase diagram of the concentration dependence of Tc in the high-Tc superconductors, and this crossover has been applied to explain the phase diagram in that case. Under 254nm irradiation in chloroform, Co(acac)₃ (Hacac = 2,4-pentanedione) is converted to Co(acac)₂ and then to CoCl₂. The metal complex is the primary photoactive species in the photoreduction of Co(acac)₃, but the photosubstitution of Co(acac)₂ appears to occur primarily through absorption of light by the solvent, followed by a chain reaction in which chlorine atoms displace pentanedionyl radicals. The photosubstitution rate law is complex, and the apparent quantum yield (based on total light absorbed) varies with incident light intensity and Co(acac)₂ concentration, reaching values as high as 16 under the conditions of …

Evolving Tenure Rights And Agricultural Intensification In Southwestern Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Economics

Popular and official representations of the environment in Burkina Faso present soils as fragile and potentially subject to catastrophic collapse in fertility. In the cotton growing zone of southwestern Burkina Faso, researchers and policy makers attribute changes in land cover and land quality to population growth. This paper presents evidence questioning the dominant "population-degradation narrative" as applied to Burkina. We find that farmers are intensifying their production systems. While population has led to land scarcity, farmers are responding to both the resulting uncertainty in land rights and reductions in soil quality by intensifying the production process. Investments are used both …
