Hypersaline lakes are noted for their simple communities which facilitate understanding ecological interactions (Williams et al. 1990; Wurtsbaugh 1992; Jellison and Melack 1988). Nevertheless, we still cannot easily predict how environmental changes will effect the population dynamics in these lakes, at least in part because even these simple ecosystems may be more complex than we .realize. Many hypersaline lakes are dominated by the brine shrimp Artemia spp. The production of brine shrimp is often very high because the terminal, saline lakes accumulate nutrients that make them rich, and because the short food chains in them (nutrients-->phytoplankton-->brine shrimp) minim …

Federal Commodity Programs And Returns To Irrigation In The West, Marcel P. Aillery, Economic Research Service, Natural Resources And Environment Division

This report examines the impact of Federal commodity programs on returns to irrigation in the western United States. Returns to irrigation are defined as average returns to land, management, fixed capital, and water (above variable water cost), net of returns to dryland crop alternatives. Commodity market returns and program revenues per unit of applied irrigation water are estimated by field crop and subregion. Two representative study years - 1984 and 1987 - highlight the effect of differing commodity prices and program support levels under extreme market conditions. This draft environmental assessment (EA) discusses two related actions proposed to assist in the recovery of two Federally-listed endangered fish species. The actions are intended to restore use of historic and designated critical habitat of the Gunnison River by the Colorado squawfish and razorback sucker. The proposed actions are to: construct and operate a fish passageway around the Redlands Diversion Dam; and execute an interim (short-term) memorandum of agreement (water agreement) to supply streamflows needed to operate the passageway and maintain downstream fish habitat and access for fish to the passageway. HS Resources Incorporated and Lario Oil and Gas Company (HS Resources) propose to drill three natural gas exploration wells (one discovery, one confirmation, and one delineation well) on public lands in the Essex Mountain area located east of the Sand Dunes Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in Sweetwater County, Wyoming (see Maps 1-1 and 1-2). These public lands are administered by the Green River Resource Area (GRRA), Rock Springs District of the Bureau of Land Management.

The Statewide Transportation Planning Process for highway transportation builds upon the planning processes previously used by UDOT. The previous planning process developed a three-tier list of capacity and system improvement projects from public and UDOT staff participation. Projects were ranked according to need into three priorities. Priority One projects were those needed within five years. Priority Two projects were needed in five to ten years, and Priority Three projects were those projects needed in ten to twenty years. This Final Environmental Impact Statement documents the analysis of three alternatives, including the "No Action" alternative, that were developed for the proposed Tailholt Administrative Research Study. The alternatives respond to the major issues and resources that were identified for this project. The action alternatives would allow timber harvest, using helicopter yarding and no road construction, to be conducted as part of an ongoing study designed to provide forest managers with information on minimizing resource damage when conducting forest management activities.

The project area is northeast of the city of Boise and is located on the Idaho City and Mountain Home Ranger Districts. American Oil and Gas Corporation (American), also doing business as Martens and Peck Operating, proposes a coal bed methane (CBM) project called the Lighthouse project near Gillette, Wyoming in central Campbell County just south of the Marquiss CBM project. Wells drilled in the project area would be from intermingled private, state, and federal oil and gas properties. At full production, American hopes to produce methane gas from a maximum of 200 wells completed in the Wyodak coal seam in the Lighthouse project area. Of the 200 wells, 100 would produce federally owned methane gas.

A planning review, including public participation, is being conducted to evaluate the management implications, needs, and issues associated with the discovery of uniquely preserved fossil plants in the former Washakie Resource Area (now part of the Bighorn Basin Resource Area) of the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM's) Worland District. The Big Cedar Ridge Fossil Plant Area (the planning review area) is comprised of about 1,550 acres of BLM-administered federal land surface and federally-owned minerals in and around the fossil discovery site.
