Gender Patterns In Science Course Enrollment And Course Drop Patterns In An Iowa Senior High School, Sandra L. Stephen, Elizabeth D. Riesz
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
In order to ascertain whether local patterns corresponded to the national trends, which show fewer female and minority students enrolling in and completing high school physical science courses, the Cedar Rapids Community School District studied the course enrollment and drop patterns of seniors in one of the District high schools. Male students predominated in physics and AP Chemistry, and the proportion of males in AP Physics was significantly greater than the proportion of females. The proportion of females in chemistry was significantly greater than their proportion in the senior class. Course dropping patterns revealed a statistically significant relationship between gender …

Paleokarst And Associated Mineralization At The Linwood Mine, Scott County Iowa, Paul L. Garvin
Paleokarst And Associated Mineralization At The Linwood Mine, Scott County Iowa, Paul L. Garvin
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Operations at the Linwood Mine in Scott County, Iowa, have exposed, on two working levels, extensive pre-Pennsylvanian paleokarst and associated sediment fillings and mineralization in Middle Devonian limestones. Cavities in Davenport-Spring Grove host rocks range up to 270 meters in length and are virtually all filled with fluviatile sediment. Cavities in Cedar Rapids host rocks, on average, are smaller and some are unfilled. Limestone dissolution was controlled by high-angle fractures with a wide variety of orientations and by bedding plane and stylolitic partings. Dissolutional features on both levels of the mine provide evidence for phreatic and vadose processes. Most of …
Critical Success Factors For Organizational Case Success, Chad Strauss
Critical Success Factors For Organizational Case Success, Chad Strauss
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Practitioners and researchers have suggested that Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) technology can significantly improve the productivity of systems analysts and the quality of systems development. Before CASE can succeed, however, specific components must exist. This paper explores CASE and the components necessary for its widespread acceptance and use within information systems departments. Specifically, this paper will examine the systems development life cycle (SDLC), the possible benefits of CASE, the current state of CASE, critical success factors for CASE, and finally CASE use.

Pollution Prevention Implementation Plan For Vehicle Maintenance, Iowa Small Business Development Centers, Iowa Waste Reduction Center
Iowa Waste Reduction Center Book Gallery
The Pollution Prevention Implementation Plan for Vehicle Maintenance was prepared as part of the Iowa Pollution Prevention Initiative (IPPI) pilot project. IPPI demonstrated the team approach to small business pollution prevention technical assistance through integration of existing Iowa Small Business Development Center and Iowa Waste Reduction Center services. This cooperative effort was designed to help small businesses learn about and implement pollution prevention through recognition of pollution prevention options, comparison of costs and benefits, and evaluation of financing options. The Pollution Prevention Implementation Plan (PPIP) for Vehicle Maintenance provides: • An overview of pollution prevention options, • A review of …
Multiquadric Interpolation: Surface Fitting In Three-Dimensional Space, Michelle Ruse
Multiquadric Interpolation: Surface Fitting In Three-Dimensional Space, Michelle Ruse
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Using mathematics to solve a problem does not always yield a perfect or absolute answer but may instead yield an approximate solution. We can try to approximate the solution as precisely as possible by using the mathematical tools and skills that are available to us or we could try to discover new methods which would enable us to find good approximations. It is important that we have precise approximating tools to begin with, so that we may preserve as much accuracy as possible.
We can find such problems in the world around us. For instance, if we try to construct …

Survey Of Hematozoa And Intestinal Helminths Infecting Green-Winged Teal In Guthrie County, Iowa, Rick Klann, Bryan Hellyer
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Five helminths and one sporozoan were recovered from 21 hunter-killed green-winged teal collected from Lakin Slough in Guthrie County, Iowa during October and November of 1991. The sporozoan, Leucocytozoon simondi, was identified in blood smears from all 21 teal. The helminths recovered from the alimentary tract included three trematodes, Cotylurus flabelliformis, Echinostoma trivolvis and Zygocotyle lunata; a hymenolepid tapeworm; and one acanthocephalan, Corynosoma constrictum. The ecological factors associated with infection by these parasites are discussed.
Inheritance And Number Of Genes Affecting Quantitative Traits Within F2 Maize Populations, D. H. Schmidt, A. R. Hallauer
Inheritance And Number Of Genes Affecting Quantitative Traits Within F2 Maize Populations, D. H. Schmidt, A. R. Hallauer
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Populations derived from crosses of elite genotypes are commonly used in plant breeding programs. Knowledge of the genetic variation among individuals and their progenies within F2 populations is essential for effective selection of important traits. The genetic variation and number of effective factors affecting the expression of quantitative traits within 30 F2 maize (Zea mays L.) populations were determined by different methods suggested for study of F2 populations. Estimates of heritability and number of effective factors varied among F2 populations for each trait, primarily because of the differences in trait expression between parents of crosses and the environmental effects upon …

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1994-95, Paul E. Rider
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Since 1976, annual reports have served as a continuing record of the activities of the Iowa Academy of Science and an archive for its history. These augment the 100 year IAS history written in the centennial year of 1975.
This report covers the period from July 1, 1994 to June 30, 1995. It is based on the official records of the Academy (committee reports, Board minutes, correspondence) as well as the recollections, impressions and thoughts of the author.

Hydrogeology Of The Devonian-Silurian Carbonate Aquifer, Northern Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Keith E. Schilling
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The hydrogeology of the Devonian-Silurian carbonate aquifer was investigated at a hazardous waste site in northern Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Data collected at the project site included bedrock cores, specific capacity measurements in discrete packer intervals and monitoring wells, hydraulic-head measurements and groundwater samples collected from select Devonian and Silurian wells.

Radon Reduction, Improvement Of Indoor Air Quality, And Energy Savings Through An Original Solar Ventilation System, Heather E. Rhoads
Radon Reduction, Improvement Of Indoor Air Quality, And Energy Savings Through An Original Solar Ventilation System, Heather E. Rhoads
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study evaluated the improvement of indoor air quality and energy savings achieved, by an original solar ventilation system installed at test sites exhibiting elevated radon levels. Conventional residential energy conservation measures that limit air exchange rates between the indoors and outdoors have been shown to increase concentrations of radioactive radon decay products as well as other indoor air contaminants. Growing concern about radon lung cancer risks, carbon monoxide poisoning, and the "sick building syndrome" have increased demand for improved indoor air quality. Due to added heating and cooling loads, ventilation generally incurs substantial installation and operational costs. All commercially …
