Measurements Of The Electric And Magnetic Form Factors Of The Proton From Q2=1.75 To 8.83 (Gev/C)2, L Andivahis, R S. Hicks, R A. Miskimen, Gerald Alvin Peterson, S Rokni
Gerald Alvin Peterson
The proton elastic form factors GEp(Q2) and GMp(Q2) have been extracted for Q2=1.75 to 8.83 (GeV/c)2 via a Rosenbluth separation to ep elastic cross section measurements in the angular range 13°≤θ≤90°. The Q2 range covered more than doubles that of the existing data. For Q2<4 >(GeV/c)2, where the data overlap with previous measurements, the total uncertainties have been reduced to < 14% in GEp and < 1.5% in GMp. Results for GEp(Q2) are consistent with the dipole fit GD(Q2)=(1+Q2/0.71)-2, while those for GMp(Q2)/μpGD(Q2) decrease smoothly from 1.05 to 0.92. Deviations from form factor scaling are observed up to 20%. The ratio Q2F2/F1 is observed to approach a constant value for Q2>3 (GeV/c)2. Comparisons are made to vector meson dominance, dimensional scaling, QCD sum rule, diquark, and constituent quark models, none of which fully characterize all the new data.

Do Prokaryotes Contain Microtubules?, Lynn Margulis, D. Bermudes, G. Hinkle
Lynn Margulis (1938 - 2011)
In eukaryotic cells, microtubules are 24-nm-diameter tubular structures composed of a class of conserved proteins called tubulin. They are involved in numerous cell functions including ciliary motility, nerve cell elongation, pigment migration, centrosome formation, and chromosome movement. Although cytoplasmic tubules and fibers have been observed in bacteria, some with diameters similar to those of eukaryotes, no homologies to eukaryotic microtubules have been established. Certain groups of bacteria including azotobacters, cyanobacteria, enteric bacteria, and spirochetes have been frequently observed to possess microtubule-like structures, and others, including archaebacteria, have been shown to be sensitive to drugs that inhibit the polymerization of microtubules. …

High-resolution (Theta = 4 arcseconds .4 x 3 arcseconds .1) CO observations of the IR luminous system VV 114 (IC 1623) using the Owens Valley Millimeter array reveal 5.1 x 1010 Solar masses of H2 in a 5.9 x 3.1 kpc (15 arcseconds x 8 arcseconds) bar with two 4-6 kpc long tails (D = 80 Mpc for H 0= 75). The wide separation (6 kpc) of the merging optical galaxies, the extended gas distribution, and the noncircular gas kinematics suggest that VV 114 is in an early stage of a gas-rich merger. The concentration of gas and its dominance …

Multiple Hadron Production By 14.5 Gev Electron And Positron Scattering From Nuclear Targets, P V. Degtyarenko, J Button-Shafer, L Elouadrhiri, R A. Miskimen, Gerald Alvin Peterson, K Wang
Gerald Alvin Peterson
Multiple proton and pion electroproduction from nuclei are studied. Final states including at least two protons produced by the interaction of 14.5 GeV electrons and positrons with light nuclei (mainly 12C and 16O) have been measured, and compared with analogous data from 40Ar. Scattered electrons and positrons were detected in the energy transfer range from 0.2 to 12.5 GeV, and four-momentum transfer squared range from 0.1 to 5.0 GeV2/c2. Phenomenological characteristics of the secondary hadron production cross sections such as temperature and velocity of the effective source of hadrons were found to be dependent on energy transfer to the nucleus …

A Computer-Based Atlas Of Global Instrumental Climate Data, Raymond S. Bradley, Linda G. Ahem, Frank T. Keimig
Raymond S Bradley
Color-shaded and contoured images of global gridded instrumental data have been produced as a computer-based atlas, available to the climate community through Internet. Each image simultaneously depicts anomaly maps of surface temperature, sea level pressure, 500- mb geopotential heights, and percentages of reference period precipitation. Monthly, seasonal, and annual composites are available, in either cylindrical equidistant or Northern and Southern Hemisphere polar projections. Temperature maps are available from 1854 to 1991, precipitation maps from 1851 to 1989, sea level pressure maps from 1899 to 1991, and 500-mb height maps from 1946 to 1991. All images exist as GIP (Graphics Interchange …
