New Polyanion-Based Cathode Materials For Alkali-Ion Batteries, Hooman Yaghoobnejad Asl Jan 2016

New Polyanion-Based Cathode Materials For Alkali-Ion Batteries, Hooman Yaghoobnejad Asl

Doctoral Dissertations

"A number of new materials have been discovered through exploratory synthesis with the aim to be studied as the positive electrode (cathode) in Li-ion and Na-ion batteries. The focus has been set on the ease of synthesis, cost and availability of active ingredients in the battery, and decent cycle-life performance through a combination of iron and several polyanionic ligands. An emphasis has been placed also on phosphite (HPO32-) as a polyanionic ligand, mainly due to the fact that it has not been studied seriously before as a polyanion for cathode materials. The concept of mixed polyanions, for …

The Role Of Pre-Existing Basement Fabrics In The Initiation Of Continental Rifting: The Okavango Rift Zone, Botswana, Angelica Alvarez Naranjo Jan 2016

The Role Of Pre-Existing Basement Fabrics In The Initiation Of Continental Rifting: The Okavango Rift Zone, Botswana, Angelica Alvarez Naranjo

Doctoral Dissertations

"Integrated geophysical, remote sensing, and field investigations of the Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ), Botswana indicate that a feedback between optimum-oriented basement structures and fluid flow influence the nucleation and growth of continental rifts in their incipient stages. The ORZ, the youngest rift of the East African Rift System, occurs within a Proterozoic inter-cratonic suture zone - the NE-trending Precambrian Damara/Ghanzi-Chobe orogenic belts. The Pleistocene to Holocene ORZ forms a ~450 km long and ~100 km wide half-graben bounded by NE-trending normal faults. Basement units within the Damara/Ghanzi-Chobe orogenic belts exhibit a well-developed NE-trending linear fabric (045-065) defined by parallel limbs …

Algorithms Leveraging Smartphone Sensing For Analyzing Explosion Events, Srinivas Chakravarthi Thandu Jan 2016

Algorithms Leveraging Smartphone Sensing For Analyzing Explosion Events, Srinivas Chakravarthi Thandu

Doctoral Dissertations

"The increasing frequency of explosive disasters throughout the world in recent years have created a clear need for the systems to monitor for them continuously to improve the post-disaster emergency events such as rescue and recovery operations. Disasters both man-made and natural are unfortunate and not preferred, however monitoring them may be a lifesaving phenomenon in emergency scenarios. Dedicated sensors deployed in the public places and their associated networks to monitor such events may be inadequate and must be complemented for making the monitoring more pervasive and effective. In the recent past, modern smartphones with significant processing, networking and storage …

Single Particle-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry Technology Development For Metallic Nanoparticle Characterization In Complex Matrices, Yongbo Dan Jan 2016

Single Particle-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry Technology Development For Metallic Nanoparticle Characterization In Complex Matrices, Yongbo Dan

Doctoral Dissertations

"As the rapid growing of nanotechnology, the release of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) into the environment is inevitable. After entering the real environment, ENPs tend to react with different components of the ecosystem (e.g. water, soil, air, plants) and make their characterization difficult. Analyzing ENPs in these complex matrices still remains as a grand challenge. ENPs characterization is normally the first step of risk assessment. Current analytical techniques have shown some limitations in revealing the unique characteristics of ENPs in complex matrices and reliable analytical techniques are in urgent need. Single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) is an emerging …

"Manufactured nano-/micro-materials (MNMs) have been widely used and their interactions with niche biological environment are highly concerned for both of their biohazardous and bioactive effects, whereas no available comprehensive evaluations or regulations have been provided yet. This dissertation thus focuses on three major aspects: 1) fundamental toxicity understandings of a typical MNMs (zinc oxide nanoparticles), 2) bioactivity evaluations of representative bioactive MNMs, and 3) development of novel micro-probes for high spatial resolution monitoring. Firstly, the NP's concentration, irradiation, hydrodynamic size, and the localized pH, ionic strength, NP zeta-potential as well as dissolved oxygen levels were found correlated with the production …

Functional Nanoporous Polyamide Aerogels, Malik Adnan Saeed Jan 2016

Functional Nanoporous Polyamide Aerogels, Malik Adnan Saeed

Doctoral Dissertations

"Aerogels are low-density materials consisting of 3D assemblies of nanoparticles with high open porosities and surface areas. Inspired by the extraordinary mechanical strength of polymer crosslinked aerogels, our recent attention is focused on inexpensive multifunctional isocyanates reacting with a variety of aromatic, organometallic and inorganic monomers. Three such systems discussed here are:

(A) Polymeric aerogels synthesized via a room temperature reaction of an aromatic triisocyanate with pyromellitic acid. Using solid-state CPMAS 13C and 15N NMR, it was found that the skeletal framework was a statistical co-polymer of polyamide, polyurea and polyimide. Stepwise pyrolytic decomposition followed by reactive etching …

Pointwise And Uniform Convergence Of Fourier Series On Su(2), Donald Forrest Myers Jan 2016

Pointwise And Uniform Convergence Of Fourier Series On Su(2), Donald Forrest Myers

Doctoral Dissertations

"Let f be a Lipschitz function on the special unitary group SU (2). We prove that the Fourier partial sums of f converge to f uniformly on SU (2), thereby extending theorems of Caccioppoli, Mayer, and a special case of Ragozin. Pointwise convergence theorems for the Fourier series of functions on SU (2), due to Liu and Qian, were obtained by Clifford algebra techniques. We obtain similar versions of these theorems using simpler proof techniques: classical harmonic analysis and group theory"--Abstract, page iii.

Dft Investigations Of Hydrogen Storage Materials, Gang Wang Jan 2016

Dft Investigations Of Hydrogen Storage Materials, Gang Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Hydrogen serves as a promising new energy source having no pollution and abundant on earth. However the most difficult problem of applying hydrogen is to store it effectively and safely, which is smartly resolved by attempting to keep hydrogen in some metal hydrides to reach a high hydrogen density in a safe way. There are several promising metal hydrides, the thermodynamic and chemical properties of which are to be investigated in this dissertation.

Sodium alanate (NaAlH4) is one of the promising metal hydrides with high hydrogen storage capacity around 7.4 wt. % and relatively low decomposition temperature of …

Palynological Studies Of Holocene Lake Sediments In The Missouri Ozarks, Robert D. Haselwander

Doctoral Dissertations

"Five small lakes in southeast Missouri (Frisco, Pine Forest, and Bray Area lakes [Phelps County], and Cypress and Blue ponds [Bollinger County]) were cored for paleolimnological studies. Cores were evaluated for their sedimentology, palynology, and geochemistry. In two of these lakes (Bray Area and Pine Forest lakes) the planktonic algae were also studied in the water column, along with ecological parameters. Algae in the sediments were compared to algae in the water to understand the resistance of different species to decay, and a suggested methodology for this work is described. Reconstructions of the past environments around each lake were created …

Properties Of Amorphous Transparent Conducting And Semiconducting Oxides From First Principles, Rabi Khanal Jan 2016

Properties Of Amorphous Transparent Conducting And Semiconducting Oxides From First Principles, Rabi Khanal

Doctoral Dissertations

"Amorphous transparent conducting and semiconducting oxides possess properties superior or comparable to their crystalline counterparts. The structure-property relationship in amorphous oxides is not nearly as well understood as in the case of the crystalline transparent conducting oxides. We have employedab initio molecular dynamics and a liquid quench approach to simulate amorphous oxide structures and performed density functional-based calculations to study the electronic properties of several amorphous conducting and semiconducting oxides with various cation compositions.

The effect of amorphization in oxides was investigated by taking indium oxide as a progenitor of the system. From the thorough study it was confirmed …

"Given its potential for a large variety of real-life applications, smartphone crowdsensing has recently gained tremendous attention from the research community. Smartphone crowdsensing is a paradigm that allows ordinary citizens to participate in large-scale sensing surveys by using user-friendly applications installed in their smartphones. In this way, fine-grained sensing information is obtained from smartphone users without employing fixed and expensive infrastructure, and with negligible maintenance costs.

Existing smartphone sensing systems depend completely on the participants' willingness to submit up-to-date and accurate information regarding the events being monitored. Therefore, it becomes paramount to scalably and effectively determine, enforce, and optimize the …

Small Sample Confidence Bands For The Survival Functions Under Proportional Hazards Model, Emad Mohamed Abdurasul Jan 2016

Small Sample Confidence Bands For The Survival Functions Under Proportional Hazards Model, Emad Mohamed Abdurasul

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this work, a saddlepoint-based method is developed for generating small sample confidence bands for the population survival function from the Kaplan-Meier (KM), the product limit (PL), and Abdushukurov-Cheng-Lin (ACL) survival function estimators, under the proportional hazards model. In the process the exact distribution of these estimators is derived and developed mid-population tolerance bands for said estimators. The proposed saddlepoint method depends upon the Mellin transform of the zero-truncated survival estimator which is derived for the KM, PL, and ACL estimators. These transforms are inverted via saddlepoint approximations to yield highly accurate approximations to the cumulative distribution functions of the …

Integrated Geophysical Approach Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography And Multichannel Analysis Of Surface Wave In Assessing Wilson Spring Development, Ibrahim E. Ahmed Jan 2016

Integrated Geophysical Approach Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography And Multichannel Analysis Of Surface Wave In Assessing Wilson Spring Development, Ibrahim E. Ahmed

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research investigated fractured zones leading to preferential flow paths of Wilson Spring. In this context, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data and multi-channel analyses of surface waves (MASW) data were acquired at studied site with the purpose of mapping a variable depth to top of bedrock and geological structures.

Interpretation of the boreholes, MASW, and ERT data indicated that a depth to top of rock does vary significantly at the studied site due to many solution-widened fractures. Multiple near-vertical solution-widened fractures were mapped in the studied site based on the interpretation of the ERT data. The mapped solution-widened fractures appear …

Construction Of Multi-State Potential Energy Surfaces For Spectroscopy And Dynamics, Phalgun Lolur Jan 2016

Construction Of Multi-State Potential Energy Surfaces For Spectroscopy And Dynamics, Phalgun Lolur

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation is about construction and visualization of multi-state Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces which are essential for studying spectroscopy and dynamics. A potential energy surface is a mathematical function that represents the energy of a system as a function of its molecular geometry. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation enables us to solve the Schrödinger equation by separating the nuclear and electronic motions. Construction of potential energy surfaces has become a basic and crucial operation for chemists in order to compute various electronic states of molecules for understanding the spectroscopy, kinetics and dynamics of molecules. These methods have been used to successfully (i) …

Contribution Of New Thiol Antioxidant In The Treatment Of Acetaminophen Toxicity, Ahdab Naeem Khayyat Jan 2016

Contribution Of New Thiol Antioxidant In The Treatment Of Acetaminophen Toxicity, Ahdab Naeem Khayyat

Doctoral Dissertations

"Acetaminophen (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol, APAP) is one of the most widely used over-the-counter antipyretic analgesic medications. It is safe at therapeutic doses, but an overdose can result in severe hepato-nephrotoxicity, a leading cause of drug-induced acute liver failure in the U.S. Although a few different mechanisms have been proposed for APAP-induced toxicity, a significant amount of evidence has pointed to the potential involvement of oxidative stress in acetaminophen toxicity. Depletion of glutathione (GSH) is one of the initiating steps in APAP-induced toxicity; therefore, one strategy for restricting organ damage is to restore GSH levels by using GSH prodrugs like N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Although …

Blended Learning In Chemistry Laboratory Courses: Enhancing Learning Outcomes And Aligning Student Needs With Available Resources, Shayna Brianne Burchett

Doctoral Dissertations

"Freshman science courses are intended to prepare students for the rigor and expectations of subsequent college science. While secondary education aims to prepare students for the college curriculum, many incoming freshman lack the sense of responsibility for their own learning that is essential for success in a college-level course. The freshman general-chemistry laboratory course at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) was identified as a bottleneck course with a demand beyond accommodation capacity. To address the bottleneck and develop a sense of learner responsibility, a decision was made to investigate laboratory course delivery strategies. As a result of …

Electrodeposition And Characterization Of Metals And Metal Oxides For Energy Conversion And Storage, Ying-Chau Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation investigates the electrodeposition of metal and metal oxide thin films applicable to solar water splitting cells. Paper I describes the synthesis of cobalt hydroxide, ß-Co(OH)2, by electrochemically reducing tris(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) in alkaline solution. Paper II presents a scheme to convert the ß-Co(OH)2 to CoOOH and Co3O4 and compares their catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction. Co3O4 appears to be a more active catalyst than CoOOH based on Tafel analysis. However, when the observed current densities are corrected for the measured electrochemically active surface area, the linear region of the …

Continuous Flow Reactor For Carbonic Acid Hydrolysis/Pretreatment Of Microalgal Biomass To Produce Bioethanol, Nicholas Dudenhoeffer

Doctoral Dissertations

"In order to maximize bioethanol production an efficient pretreatment method for the hydrolysis of polysaccharides to fermentable sugars is necessary. Commonly used pretreatment methods are the slow enzymatic hydrolysis and the corrosive mineral acid hydrolysis process that requires a post-treatment neutralization step and generates waste stream. We investigated the high temperature water with carbonic acid catalyst as an alternative method. Carbonic acid generated from dissolved CO2 is inexpensive and environmentally benign, and easily removed by decompression. A high pressure continuous flow reactor that can continuously process the wet biomass stream and perform the carbonic acid hydrolysis in-situ using the …

Liposomal Delivery Of Pde5 Inhibitors And Ut-15c To Human Erythrocytes, Elizabeth Anne Bowles Jan 2016

Liposomal Delivery Of Pde5 Inhibitors And Ut-15c To Human Erythrocytes, Elizabeth Anne Bowles

Doctoral Dissertations

"Previous studies have shown that the controlled release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from human erythrocytes is an important mechanism for the regulation of vascular caliber. However, erythrocytes from patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) fail to release ATP in response to the physiological stimuli of exposure to low oxygen tension or mechanical deformation of a magnitude these cells would encounter in the pulmonary circulation. This defect could be a significant contributor to the increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) that is the cause of the pathological increase in vascular pressures in humans with PAH.

One important approach to the treatment of …

Unconventional Phase Transitions In Random Systems, Hatem Nuri Barghathi Jan 2016

Unconventional Phase Transitions In Random Systems, Hatem Nuri Barghathi

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this thesis we study the effects of different types of disorder and quasiperiodic modulations on quantum, classical and nonequilibrium phase transitions. After a brief introduction, we examine the effect of topological disorder on phase transitions and explain a host of violations of the Harris and Imry-Ma criteria that predict the fate of disordered phase transitions. We identify a class of random and quasiperiodic lattices in which a topological constraint introduces strong anticorrelations leading to modifications of the Harris and Imry-Ma criteria for such lattices. We investigate whether or not the Imry-Ma criterion, that predicts that random field disorder destroys …

Spectroscopic And Spectro-Astrometric Analysis Of T Tauri Stars, Logan Ryan Brown Jan 2016

Spectroscopic And Spectro-Astrometric Analysis Of T Tauri Stars, Logan Ryan Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

"To understand our own solar origins, we must investigate the composition of the protoplanetary disk from which the solar system formed. To infer this, we study analogs to the early solar system called T Tauri stars. These objects are low-mass, pre-main sequence stars surrounded by circumstellar disks of material from which planets are believed to form. We present high-resolution, near-infrared spectroscopic data for the T Tauri stars DR Tau and AA Tau using NIRSPEC at the Keck II telescope. For DR Tau, a spectro-astrometric analysis was performed, obtaining sub-seeing spatial information on water emission. Alongside a disk model, we constrained …

Identifying Shallow Subsurface Stratigraphy And Voids Using Dispersive Characteristics Of Electromagnetic And Surface Waves, Payman Hajiani

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation presents the results of three manuscripts on spectral analysis of electromagnetic and seismic surface waves to detect subsurface stratigraphy and voids. In the first manuscript, a new technique was developed by utilizing spectral analysis of surface waves to detect subsurface openings. This technique applied the concept of group delay to evaluate the effects of subsurface voids on the phase shift domain. Seismic data sets were acquired at different sites where the shape, size, and depth of the void varied. In all surveys, the time delay technique precisely identified the locations of the subsurface openings. The second manuscript presents …

Synthesis And Functionalization Of A Triaryldiamine-Base Photoconductive/Photorefractive Composite, And Its Application To Aberrated Image Restoration, Yichen Liang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Organic photorefractive (PR) composites have recently emerged as an important class of materials for applications including high-density data storage, optical communication, and biomedical imaging. In an effort to further improve their performance, this study focused on the utilization of functionalized semiconductor nanocrystals to photosensitize triaryamine (TPD)-based PR composites, as well as the application of TPD-based PR composites in the restoration of aberrated optical information. A novel approach to functionalize CdSe quantum dot (QCdSe) was firstly introduced where the sulfonated triarydiamine (STPD) was used as charge-transporting ligand to passivate QCdSe. TPD-based photoconductive and PR composites were photosensitized with the STPD-passivated QCdSe …

Existence And Classification Of Nonoscillatory Solutions Of Two Dimensional Time Scale Systems, Özkan Özturk Jan 2016

Existence And Classification Of Nonoscillatory Solutions Of Two Dimensional Time Scale Systems, Özkan Özturk

Doctoral Dissertations

"During the past years, there has been an increasing interest in studying oscillation and nonoscillation criteria for dynamic equations and systems on time scales that harmonize the oscillation and nonoscillation theory for the continuous and discrete cases in order to combine them in one comprehensive theory and eliminate obscurity from both.

We not only classify nonoscillatory solutions of dynamic equations and systems on time scales but also guarantee the (non)existence of such solutions by using the Knaster fixed point theorem, Schauder - Tychonoff fixed point theorem, and Schauder fixed point theorem. The approach is based on the sign of nonoscillatory …

Geophysical Imaging Of Karst Features In Missouri, Jeremiah Chukwunonso Obi Jan 2016

Geophysical Imaging Of Karst Features In Missouri, Jeremiah Chukwunonso Obi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Automated electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) supported with multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and boring data were used to map karst related features in Missouri in order to understand karst processes better in Missouri. Previous works on karst in Missouri were mostly surficial mapping of bedrock outcrops and joints, which are not enough to define the internal structure of karst system, since most critical processes in karst occur underground. To understand these processes better, the density, placement and pattern of karst related features like solution-widened joints and voids, as well as top of bedrock were mapped. In the course of …

Boundary Control Of Parabolic Pde Using Adaptive Dynamic Programming, Behzad Talaei Jan 2016

Boundary Control Of Parabolic Pde Using Adaptive Dynamic Programming, Behzad Talaei

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this dissertation, novel adaptive/approximate dynamic programming (ADP) based state and output feedback control methods are presented for distributed parameter systems (DPS) which are expressed as uncertain parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) in one and two dimensional domains. In the first step, the output feedback control design using an early lumping method is introduced after model reduction. Subsequently controllers were developed in four stages; Unlike current approaches in the literature, state and output feedback approaches were designed without utilizing model reduction for uncertain linear, coupled nonlinear and two-dimensional parabolic PDEs, respectively. In all of these techniques, the infinite horizon cost …
