A Study Of The Heat Effects At Electrodes During Electrolysis, Howard Frank Holmes Dec 1958

A Study Of The Heat Effects At Electrodes During Electrolysis, Howard Frank Holmes

Doctoral Dissertations

Temperature difference measurements were made during the electrolysis of aqueous copper sulfate between copper electrodes. The temperature differences measured were those between the cathode and the anode, the cathode solution, and the anode and the solution. These values were obtained as a function of the time of the electrolysis. The variation of these differences with time and their magnitudes were explained in terms of the entropy changes occurring at the electrodes, resistance, and polarization.

The effect of some inert electrolytes on these temperature differences was determined as was the effect of gelatin. Explanations for these effects were given in terms …

A Study Of The Reduction Of Certain 1-Substituted Naphthalenes By Alkali Metals In Liquid Ammonia, Gerald Titus Davis

Doctoral Dissertations

(From the Introduction)

The first phase of the work to ·be presented was aimed at studying the conditions under which 1-aminonaphthalene is efficiently reduced to the 5,8-dihydro derivative and thereby finding experimental evidence which would be of value in the selection of a mechanism for the reduction. After the initial work, the study was extended to include the reduction of other 1-substituted naphthalenes.

Synthesis Of 7-(Dialkylaminoalkyl)-Benzo [C] Phenothiazines; The Metalation Of 7h-Benzo [C] Phenothiazine With N-Butyllithium, William Earl Tatum Dec 1958

Synthesis Of 7-(Dialkylaminoalkyl)-Benzo [C] Phenothiazines; The Metalation Of 7h-Benzo [C] Phenothiazine With N-Butyllithium, William Earl Tatum

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Phenothiazine is one of the more widely investigated heterocyclic molecules known to modern chemistry. The founding of the synthetic dye industry in the latter part of the nineteenth century stimulated many new fields of organic research, one of which was phenothiazine chemistry. Bernthsen, known as father of phenothiazine chemistry, first synthesized (1) this compound in 1883, after suspecting its presence in the nucleus of the methylene blue dyes.

Since that time phenothiazine and its derivatives have found uses as antioxidants (2), antihistamines (3), antiemetics (4), and in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (5). During the past decade, considerable attention …

Spectral Theory Of Self-Adjoint Ordinary Differential Operators, Charles C. Oehring Dec 1958

Spectral Theory Of Self-Adjoint Ordinary Differential Operators, Charles C. Oehring

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Many of the properties of the ordinary Fourier series expansion of a given function are shared by the orthogonal expansion in terms of eigenfunctions of a second order ordinary differential operator. Let p = p(x) and q = q(x) be real-valued functions such that p, p', and q are continuous, and p(x) > 0, on a finite interval a ≤ x ≤ b. Let λ be a complex parameter. The classical Strum-Liouville theory [9, section 27; 4, Chapter 7; 21, Chapter 1]1 is concerned with solutions of the differential equation -(py') + qy = λ, which satisfy certain real …

A Spectrophotometric Study Of The Analytical Chemistry Of Vanadium, Kenton E. Bentley Nov 1958

A Spectrophotometric Study Of The Analytical Chemistry Of Vanadium, Kenton E. Bentley

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Vanadium is most frequently encountered in analytical chemistry in the volumetric determination of vanadium by oxidation-reduction titration. Vanadium is rarely determined gravimetrically and finds little use as a reagent in gravimetric analysis. The simple ionic forms of the valence states of vanadium and the colors of acidic, aqueous solutions of these ions, as reported in the literature, are listed in Table 1. There is some confusion in the nomenclature of the ionic forms; that given in Table 1 is by analogy to chromium.

The Synthesis Of Some Triazole Derivatives, John M. Collier Nov 1958

The Synthesis Of Some Triazole Derivatives, John M. Collier

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The triazoles have been known since the late 1800's when von Pechmann discovered the ring system during the course of his work with osazones. He first assigned the name "osotriazone" to the parent ring; this was later changed to "osotriazole", a name which is still retained for certain derivatives obtained from the sugar osazones.

The Synthesis Of Some Fluorine Derivatives As Potential Scintillation Solutes, Martin Dennis Barnett Oct 1958

The Synthesis Of Some Fluorine Derivatives As Potential Scintillation Solutes, Martin Dennis Barnett

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In connection with work being carried out, in part, by the Biomedical Research Group, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, on the evaluation of organic compounds as solutes in liquid scintillation detector systems, it seemed of interest to investigate the liquid scintillation properties of fluorine analogues of p-terphenyl and p-quaterphenyl. These compounds have been shown to possess remarkable scintillation properties; however, the use of p-quaterphenyl has been severely curtailed by its low solubility in toluene. Accordingly, the synthesis of a number of 2- and 2,7-substituted fluorines was carried out in an effort to obtain a more soluble, completely conjugated aromatic system and …

Thermodynamic Properties Of The System Pucl3-Kcl, Robert Benz Aug 1958

Thermodynamic Properties Of The System Pucl3-Kcl, Robert Benz

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

This paper is a dissertation on a study of the determination of the Gibbs free energy of formation of plutonium chloride using potentiometric measurements obtained from a galvanic cell of the type,

Ta, Pu(1)/ PuCl3-KCl(1,N1)/ Cl2(g), C.

The terminals of the two electrodes, tantalum and graphite, have been included in the representation inasmuch as their effects must be taken into consideration in the design of the cell; however, in order that the desired virtual cell reaction be realized, it is necessary that these terminals be chemically inert.

Spectrophotometric Study Of The Boron-Curcumin System, Frank Xavier Polio Aug 1958

Spectrophotometric Study Of The Boron-Curcumin System, Frank Xavier Polio

Master's Theses

With mechanism and structure in mind, the aim of this research project was to investigate the role played by the various reagents used in the curcumin spectrophotometric method. The reagents were used in varied concentrations and at times some eliminated entirely, in the hope that a greater understanding be gained in the overall mechanism followed by the reaction.

One of the major objectives was to try to determine the structure of the colored substance formed in the reaction. A step towards this goal was gained by obtaining molar ratios of the entities suspected to be an intricate part of the …

Decahydroquinoxaline : Stereoisomers And Derivatives, Lynn Pendleton Aug 1958

Decahydroquinoxaline : Stereoisomers And Derivatives, Lynn Pendleton

Theses and Dissertations

The preparation of decahydroquinoxaline by four different methods, with no determination of geometrical configuration made, was reported in the literature. The purpose of this thesis was to establish the geometrical configurations of the decahydroquinoxalines prepared by these four methods and to determine if, as the work of previous investigators suggested, the two pure isomers of decahydroquinoxaline isomerized, each giving an equilibrium mixture of both isomers. Decahydroquinoxaline was prepared by three of the four previously reported methods of preparation. Comparison of the properties of the decahydroquinoxalines prepared and the preparation, comparison, and analyses of the diacetyl and the dinitroso derivatives of …

Key intermediates in the preparation of substituted amines in the ring system were the 4-chloro-, and the 4,7-dichloro- derivatives.

The Bromination Of 1,1,1-Ethanetriacetic Acid, John A. Gurney Jul 1958

The Bromination Of 1,1,1-Ethanetriacetic Acid, John A. Gurney

Theses and Dissertations

Essential to the entire field of Organic Chemistry is the nature of the carbon to carbon bond. Our current concepts and guiding principles concerning it are almost solely constructed from aliphatic compounds, certain simple ring species, and aromatic systems. Except for special cases, aliphatic and aromatic types are felt to be mildly strained or free from internal tension while the alicylic small and medium ring compounds are the so-called strained molecules. These strained compounds involve bending back or compression of two of the four carbon bonds from an equilibrium position. Distortions of more complex origin occur in the paracyclophanes and …

The Magnesium-Hydrogen System, J. Frederick Stampfer Jr. Jun 1958

The Magnesium-Hydrogen System, J. Frederick Stampfer Jr.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The motivating factor for this investigation of the magnesium-hydrogen system was the recent interest in the hydride of beryllium. Although beryllium hydride has been prepared by the pyrolysis of di-t-butylberyllium, no evidence for the direct union of beryllium and hydrogen has been reported. It was thought that an examination of the reaction between magnesium and hydrogen and determination of the thermodynamic relations involved might have a bearing on this phenomenon. Also, the properties of magnesium hydride are interesting from an over-all periodic table viewpoint. The hydrides of beryllium and magnesium are usually considered to be intermediary between the saline, or …

On The Relation Between The Cosmic Ray Air Shower Spectrum And The Pulse Height Spectrum Of A Large Scintillator, Robert T. Barton

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The purpose of this paper is to study other lateral distribution functions proposed by various authors, to select an alternative to the one used previously, to repeat the calculations of the required quantities using the alternative function, and to comment on the relative merits of the different choices. Since an empirical formula was used in the original work it seemed desirable to use a theoretical relation for comparison if a suitable one were available.

A Problem In Atmospheric Diffusion, Albert C. Giere Jun 1958

A Problem In Atmospheric Diffusion, Albert C. Giere

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This study concerns the diffusion of atmospheric ozone through a one dimensional region, given certain initial and boundary conditions. As shown in Figure 1 the region is bounded by the planes x= -a and x=b. The plane x=0 divides the region into two parts, Region I and Region II. The solution to this type of problem consists in giving the concentration as a function of the time for any point x in both regions. A general analytic solution is obtained by means of the Laplace transformation using coefficients of diffusion which differ in Regions I and II, but which are …

Investigation In The Use Of Infrared Absorption Spectrophotometry, Richard Henry Murcott Jun 1958

Investigation In The Use Of Infrared Absorption Spectrophotometry, Richard Henry Murcott

Honors Theses

The presence of an unknown component in commercial methyl ethyl and ketone and butanol-2 is found and possible identification is discussed. A brief outline of the apparatus is involved and …

Dielectric Constant-Temperature Relationship In Some Chlorinated Phenyl Ethers, Raymond Stuart Martin Jun 1958

Dielectric Constant-Temperature Relationship In Some Chlorinated Phenyl Ethers, Raymond Stuart Martin

Honors Theses

Dielectric liquids play an important role in the transmission, distribution, and use of electrical energy. A liquid is arbitrarily classed as a dielectric if its volume resistivity is 10(10) ohm-centimeters or greater. (An ohm-centimeter is the resistance between opposite faces of one cubic centimeter of the liquid.) Transformers, circuit breakers, cables, and capacitors are among the more common devices using liquid dielectrics. The chief electrical properties which determine the performance of a dielectric liquid are its ability to resist breakdown under electrical stress, its dielectric constant (or specific inductive capacity), and its loss factor - the energy loss per unit …
