The purpose of this paper is to show the link between water use, land consolidation, agribusinesses, and the water crisis that California began to experience in 2011. In order to better understand the relationship between the growth of agribusiness in the state and the evolution of water policy, this paper explores the historical context of land policy, the growth of farming in the San Joaquin Valley, and the development of federally funded water projects in the Central Valley. Use of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) is on the rise and unfortunately, a large percentage passes through the human body. These compounds then find their way into the wastewater stream and into treatment facilities. Only a fraction of these compounds are removed from the stream prior to discharge. An environmentally acceptable alternative to discharging recycled water to rivers, lakes and other bodies of water is to use the water for irrigation of large areas of turfgrass. These PPCPs, of which some may have high mobilities in irrigated soil plant systems, may potentially impact groundwater resources. To determine the …
