Analyzing Weathering Patterns In Modern And Paleolake Deposits Of Tecopa, California: Implications For The Detection Of Paleolakes On Mars, Jason Benjamin Carman

This study focuses on two stratigraphic sections from the Tecopa paleolake and samples from the modern Tecopa and Amargosa River basins as a terrestrial analogue to Martian paleolakes. Previous work shows that the later stages of Pleistocene Lake Tecopa were highly alkaline and saline due to evaporation, which led to the formation of authigenic lacustrine minerals such as zeolites, clays, and precipitates that are potentially similar to Martian paleolakes. Paleolakes can provide information on past aqueous processes, such as the changes in the hydrologic cycle that a particular area experienced over the lifespan of a lake on Earth or Mars. …

Planetary Processes Active And Ancient: Hollowing On Mercury, Ancient Crust Formation On Mars, And Identifying Mars-Analog Habitats., Michael Steven Phillips

This dissertation comprises a thermophysical model that shows elemental sulfur may be involved in the potentially active processes that form enigmatic features called hollows on the Mercurian surface, a suite of remote sensing techniques that unveil anorthositic rocks in ancient martian crust, and deep learning to discover the spatial resolutions necessary to identify astrobiology targets in images of Mars analog landscapes.

On Mercury, hollows are high-reflectance, flat-floored depressions observed nearly globally. Hollows are thought to form via sublimation, or a “sublimation-like” process, but the identity of the sublimating phase is poorly constrained. To better understand which phase might be responsible …

Impact craters represent excellent astrobiological targets for planetary exploration missions to Mars. The impact of an asteroid or comet into a crystalline, H2O-bearing target may result in development of a hydrothermal system and increase the habitability of the substrate for the colonization of endolithic microorganisms. Given that Mars’ surface is covered by cratered basaltic rock, this study investigated target rocks and impact breccias from Vargeão Dome and Vista Alegre impact structures that formed in basalt in the Paraná Basin of Brazil.

We select four sand deposits along the traverse of the Curiosity rover to evaluate the spatial distribution of mineralogy and grain size. While extensive work has focused on characterizing the Bagnold Dunes in-situ and from orbit, less attention has been given to deposits south of the Vera Rubin Ridge (VRR). Overall, our results illustrate a compositional dichotomy among aeolian deposits, separated by the VRR. Initial investigations of hyperspectral data from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) show differences in the long wavelength spectral features and absolute reflectance measurements for the deposit south of the Bagnold Dunes. The Mars 2020 rover Perseverance will search for signs of past habitability and biosignatures after landing in Jezero Crater in February 2021. Spectroscopy is a vital tool for planetary remote sensing and Perseverance is equipped with Mastcam-Z, a stereoscopic, zoom-enabled, multispectral imager that can acquire true color images with red, green, and blue (RGB) color filters, and visible- to near-infrared images with 12 narrowband science filters between 400 and 1100 nm. Mastcam-Z will provide operational support for the rover as well as directly contribute to Perseverance’s geologic investigations.
