This work on Marquam Hill area in Portland, a relatively undeveloped urban hillside area, is a pilot study in which environmental factors are evaluated quantitatively in order to delineate limitations on development. The study was undertaken at the request of and in cooperation with the City of Portland Planning Commission and with the State of Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. Factors considered include various aspects of the land, vegetation and attitudes of inhabitants. Findings are not intended to satisfy need for individual site studies by qualified experts but should show where that expertise is needed.

This study of a portion of Oregon's Lincoln County coast describes the physical limitations to land use of the various landforms in the study area. Seven major landform types comprise the study area: beaches, active dunes, stabilized dunes, marsh land and tidal flats, marine terraces, basaltic headlands, and uplands. Descriptions and evaluations of their physical characteristics, distribution, geologic and and engineering characteristics, and potentially hazardous processes are contained in the maps, figures, and text.

The Cimarron Range forms a southeastern extension of the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The area mapped in this study lies mainly between Eagle Nest and Ute Park, New Mexico, and is centered around Cimarron Canyon.

Rocks ranging from Precambrian to Quaternary in age are exposed• - in the central Cimarron Range. Precambrian rocks in the core of the range consist mainly of moderately foliated, low- to medium-grade metamorphics intruded by faintly foliated bodies of meta-granodiorite and meta-diabase.

The purpose of this study is to ascertain the petrogensis of the Hell Canyon pluton through the use of standard petrographic techniques and three dimensional mineralogical variability trends. It is intended that this study will provide additional information to the ongoing investigations of the Boulder batholith sequence, of which this intrusion is a part.

The Boulder batholith is located in the Southeastern part of the Northern Rocky Mountains physiographic province in southwestern Montana. The evolution of Platt Shoals, a complex ridge and trough system on the south side of the Albemarle Shelf Valley, was determined and the modern hydraulic regime was inferred. The methods used were surficial grain size, 11 vibracores, seismic profiling and bathymetric maps. Platt Shoals developed in a three step process. The first, step was the formation of a substrate of late Pleistocene regressive deposits from 15,000 to 30,000 yr B. P. The second step, occurring approximately 11,000 yr B. The southwestern part of the Kachess Lake quadrangle lies between Lakes Cle Elum and Kachess, on the east flank of the central Cascade Range of Washington. The region lies between the North and South Cascade petrologic provinces, and includes rocks typical of each. Pre-Tertiary Easton Schist (called the Shuksan Suite farther north), and the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene Swauk Formation occur widely in the North Cascades, while the Tertiary Silver Pass Volcanics and Teanaway Basalt are typical of South Cascade volcanic sequences. Diabasic dikes of the Teanaway dike swarm occur throughout the vicinity.

The East Fork mine consists of a series of open cuts in steeply dipping low-grade metasediments of the Late Precambrian (?) Ocoee Series. In general the metasedimentary units strike northeast and dip steeply to the southeast. However, interpretation of stratigraphy and structure is complicated by intensive local folding and faulting. Two large thrust faults occur in the southern part of the study area, and two or more thrust sheets comprise the bulk of Dixon Mountain in the eastern part of the study area. Upper Triassic metavolcanic and metasedimentary strata in the study area are intruded by the Hurricane Divide and Craig Mountain Plutons of the Late Jurassic-Cretaceous Wallowa Batholith. The Clover Creek Greenstone is overlain by the Martin Bridge Limestone, which is in tum overlain by the Hurwal Argillite; although the sequence is in normal stratigraphic order, contacts are generally tectonic. Concurrent with Early-Middle Jurassic regional deformation, during intermediate to mafic dikes, emplacement of the plutons of the Wallowa Batholith began. The plutons intruded vertically through the greenstone and limestone and then horizontally above the greenstone. This resulted in intense penetrative plastic deformation …

The azimuths between the centers of overlapping lunar craters show a statistically strong preferred orientation over most of the lunar globe for those crater pairs where the younger crater is of relatively small diameter (10-25 km). A strong north-south preferred lineation also exists in a narrow belt along the east and northern limb of the full moon for those crater pairs involving relatively large diameter craters (45 km). Various endogenic and exogenic mechanisms which might create a preferred orientation of overlapping craters are considered in the light of these findings. Twenty-five piston cores 6 to 12 feet long were obtained from the deepwater sediments of Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho. Analyses of these cores revealed that the deep-water sediments of the lake are divided into two major sequences: a younger sequence rich in carbonate minerals, here called the carbonate sequence, and an older sequence rich in silicate minerals, referred to in this paper as the silt sequence. The carbonate sequence is composed of clay-sized quartz, aragonite, calcite, dolomite, montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite, chlorite, and amorphous material. Mineralogical and petrographic analyses of the upper Jurassic - lower Cretaceous units in the vicinity of the Dinosaur National Monument quarry near Jensen, Utah, have elucidated their characteristics and the locations of formational boundaries. The lower part of the Morrison Formation is distinguished by a decreased amount of illite and an increased amount of kaolinite. In contrast, the underlying Curtis Formation contains an approximately equal mixture of illite and kaolinite. The lower Salt Wash Member and the upper Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison are both lithologically and mineralogically identifiable in this area. Above the boundary between the two, kaolinite …

The northern part of Clarkston Mountain, in northern Utah and southern Idaho, is located about 23 miles northwest of Logan, Utah. It extends across the Malad Range from Malad Valley on the west to Cache Valley on the east. The mapped area measures 4.8 miles in the north-south direction and 6.8 miles in the east-west direction.

The Brigham Formation of Cambrian age is the oldest exposed stratigraphic unit. It consists mainly of quartzite. The Kinnikinic Formation of central Idaho is a sedimentary unit consisting principally of orthoquartzite. From its maximum measured thickness of 2285 feet in the central Lemhi Range near Gilmore, Idaho, it thins westward to 376 feet at the type section and southward to 326 feet near Arco, Idaho. Northeast of the Lemhi Range it occurs only as erosional remnants, due to pre-Devonian erosion. Both the lower and upper contacts of the Kinnikinic Formation are disconformable.

The Kinnikinic Formation is light colored, predominately fine to medium grained, thin to medium bedded, and largely cemented by silica overgrowths. Some metamorphic recrystallization has …

No evidence for more than one Wisconsin glaciation as suggested by Rich (1935) could be found. Theories for local glaciation during the decline and after the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet were also unsubstantiated. An investigation of iron, zinc, copper, and cadmium concentrations in Mytilus californianus and Mytilus edulis was conducted on specimens collected along the west coast of the United States. Animals and sea water were collected at six different areas and analyzed using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Trace metal concentrations in the animals were influenced by the collection conditions of age, species, temperature, pollution, and metal relationships. Younger animals, of both species, contained higher concentrations of all the metals. Larger, or older animals, contained the smallest metal concentrations. Copper concentrations in the animals were higher in sea water with high copper content. …

There are numerous linear features in Alpena and Presque Isle Counties, Michigan, which are generally visible on aerial photographs. These photolinears trend in two general directions, northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast. These two sets are perpendicular to each other, and represent vector means of two fracture sets.

The development of the photolinears began in Early Devonian. Throughout its history, ground water flowed along underground channels connecting fracture intersections. This underground drainage network is responsible for many of the photolinears. The Little Drum Mountains represent a deeply eroded Eocene-Oligocene volcano, consisting of a vent complex which erupted mafic flows and flow breccias, accompanied by lahars. Flows are dominated by members of the shoshonite suite and contain up to 3.95 percent K2O, mainly occult in K-rich glass, with K2O/Na2O ratios greater than 1.0. In a few interbedded flows, apparently of the calc-alkaline series, pyroxene with varying amounts of plagioclase in a fine-grained groundmass of plagioclase, mafic minerals, and interstitial glass. Stone stripes are linear accumulations of rock debris separated by finer material and oriented down the steepest available slope. In north central Oregon, the stone stripes are composed of basalt fragments and occur where the soil mantle averages less than 1 m in depth. They are best developed in areas of higher elevation, usually from about 900 to 1100 m, and are most prominent on convex to straight slopes of 15 to 30 degrees. The settlement of San Lorenzo is approximately 19 miles east of Silver City, New Mexico. The area consists of rolling hills, relatively steep slopes and the broad Mimbres River Valley. The land surface reflects partial erosion of Basin and Range fault blocks. The maximtun elevation is 7,170 feet, with relief of 1,400 feet.

The main structural feature is a northwest trending mountain range, which is a west-southwest-dipping fault block bounded on the northeast by the Mimbres fault. The author has sampled the recent bottom sediments in Tillamook Bay, Oregon. Sediment distribution is assessed in relation to sediment source areas and related to sedimentary environments. Particular attention was directed to the precision with which granulometric data can be stated. It was found that variance is quite high for granulometric parameters of the bay sediments.

Sediment distribution using different measures are displayed on charts of the bay. Size distributions of sediments at any given location are examined for geologic significance. Plotting of size distribution on graph paper using probability ordinate is shown to increase the ease of geologic interpretation. …

The latest Cenozoic in northeast Mercer County, North Dakota, is represented by five formations. They are, from bottom to top: the Charging Eagle Formation, the Medicine Hill Formation, the Snow School Formation, the Coteau Formation, and the Oahe Formation.

The Charging Eagle Formation is mainly fluvial sediment. Most of the sediment was derived from the west with only minor amounts from the northeast. It contains the first evidence of glaciation in the area.

The lower Medicine Hill Formation is mainly sediment deposited by a northeast-flowing ancestor of the Missouri River and by melt-water streams. The upp.er Medicine Hill Formation is …

"A two-phase research project was conducted on chalcopyrite concentrates from the New Lead Belt of Missouri. Phase one includes an ore microscopy study of the Magmont and Viburnum chalcopyrite concentrates in respect to mineralogy, particle size and interlocking characteristics of ore minerals and their possible relationships to poor chalcopyrite-galena separation in the copper flotation circuits.

Results of the ore microscopy study of the Magmont and Viburnum mines chalcopyrite concentrates suggest that interlocking of chalcopyrite and galena are not the cause of poor chalcopyrite-galena separation in the copper flotation circuits.

The St. Louis, in most cases, is fossiliferous and contains numerous species of foraminifers, echinoderms, bryozoans, molluscans, brachipods, arthropods and coelenterates. Algal mounds and mats are common. This study was done for the Erie Hining Company after periodic problems with the quality of pellets from taconit2 of the Biwabik Formation had been linked to the presence of carbonate minerals. The carbonates found in the cherty members of the Precambrian Biwabik Formation are predominantly siderite, ankerite, and calcite. Siderite is the only primary carbonate mineral and occurs in three forms: nicrogranular, granular (oolitic), and crystalline aggregates (recrystallized). Ankerite is a secondary mineral occurring as crystalline aggregates and alteration rims on granular siderite. Calcite is found only in fractures and fault zones. "A reconnaissance survey of stream sediments using the minus 80 mesh sieve fraction was made at 53 sites throughout the James River basin, Missouri. Sample sites within the 1460 square miles of the basin were chosen at tributary confluences, suspected contamination sources, and known areas of mineralization. Replicates and stream profiles were taken to check for analytical variation and reproducibility of results. Sediment samples were prepared by a hot nitric acid leach method. The sediments were analyzed using an atomic absorption unit to determine Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd trace metal contents.

"The trace metal contents of limestone in the Tri-State zinc-lead district were determined within a single horizon, the M bed. Ninety-six specimens, collected for a previous study of their petrographic character, were analyzed for zinc, lead, and copper using atomic absorption spectrophotometric techniques.

The unaltered M bed limestone at a distance from ore bodies was found to contain only 12-28 ppm zinc, 40-SO ppm lead and 12 ppm or less copper. Those limestone specimens which were found b earlier petrographic study to be altered principally to sparry calcite commonly contain anomalous amounts of zinc and lead. Some also have slightly …

Sargent County, in southeastern North Dakota, was glaciated during the Pleistocene Epoch. Objectives of a study of Sargent County were to (1) describe the surface sediment and interpret its origin, (2) correlate, where possible, this sediment with that of adjacent areas, and (3) recon struct the general geologic history of the county for the Quaternary Period.

A geologic map of the county was prepared using field data, topo graphic maps, aerial stereopairs, and soil maps. A map showing surface sediment origin was subsequently made using the available field and laboratory information.

The Quaternary stratigraphy of central North Dakota is best exposed along the nearly continuous, 20-meter-high, vertical bluffs of Lake Sakakawea in the Missouri River trench. The following lithostratigraphic units (in ascending order) are exposed just north of Riverdale, North Dakota, and can be correlated for tens of kilometers along the bluffs: (1) Sentinel Butte Formation (lignite-bearing sediment of Paleocene age), (2) lower Medicine Hill Formation (fluvial sand and gravel), (3) upper Medicine Hill Formation (massive pebble loam with silt and gravel inclusions> glacial sediment), (4) lower Horseshoe Valley Formation (fluvial sand and gravel), (5) upper Horseshoe Valley Formation (jointed pebble-loam, …
