Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana

A comprehensive conjunctive-use management model is developed. The dynamics of flow and solute transport processes in connected surface water groundwater systems are integrated by a dual programming management model. The governing aquifer flow parameters and streamflows are treated as stochastic random processes. Multiple realizations of the random field are generated and are explicitly incorporated in a non-linear optimization model along with other system, environmental, and management constraints. To facilitate management of large aquifer systems, a linked simulation-optimization approach is used. The simulation program generates the response matrices for flow and transport processes. The Influence Of Saprolite Composition Texture And Structure On Groundwater Flow In The Piedmont Province Henry County Virginia, John Thomas Russell

At a 500 acre site in Henry County, Virginia, differences in vertical hydraulic conductivity (KV) and lateral hydraulic conductivity (KH) measured in saprolites formed from the Fork Mountain biotite gneiss and the Leatherwood granite reflect the control of the fabric, texture, and structure of the parent rock preserved within the saprolite horizon. Using subsurface data collected from approximately 350 boreholes in conjunction with published information enabled various maps to be generated that identify the spatial relationships between geology and topography and their influence on the nature of the saprolite aquifer.

In 1986 the City of Chesapeake, Virginia began to dig shallow ponds ("lagoons") to contain alum sludge, a waste generated by the City from the process of treating potable water. Borings at the disposal site reveal that the near-surface geologic units include a thin mud-rich facies which overlies a thick sandy facies, both of which are in the Lynnhaven Member of the Tabb Formation. At 7 meters depth, a clay-rich facies of the Yorktown Formation (Morgarts Beach Member?) underlies the sandy water table aquifer. Metal Mobilization From A Near-Shore Lake Sediment Under Simulated Acidic Groundwater Inputs, Raveendra V. Ika

Simulation of acidic groundwater passing through lake sediments was conducted under controlled conditions in a laboratory. Three sediment cores collected intact from the near-shore region of an acidic lake were subjected to simulated groundwater inputs of initially identical chemistry for a seven day period. Following this period water being used in the simulation for two of the sediment cores was acidified by hydrochloric acid (HC1) addition to examine the ability of these sediments to neutralize acidic groundwater with varying H+ concentration.

Simulated acidic water passing through the sediment cores mobilized significant amounts of metals. The sediment acted as a …
