Supporting Data For Figures In "Mixing Of The Connecticut River Plume During Ambient Flood Tides: Spatial Heterogeneity And Contributions Of Bottom-Generated And Interfacial Mixing", Michael M. Whitney
Department of Marine Sciences
This archive contains the supporting data for figures in the manuscript "Mixing of the Connecticut River plume during ambient flood tides: Spatial heterogeneity and contributions of bottom-generated and interfacial mixing" by Michael M. Whitney. The objectives of this modeling study are 1) characterizing the spatial heterogeneity of turbulent buoyancy fluxes, 2) partitioning turbulent buoyancy fluxes into bottom-generated and interfacial shear contributions, and 3) quantifying contributions to plume-integrated mixing within the tidal plume. Data are from the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) results for idealized model configurations. The Zip file (Figure_data.zip) contains MATLAB data files, which are named FigureXX_data.mat. Variable names …
A Demonstration Of A Simple Methodology Of Flood Prediction For A Coastal City Under Threat Of Sea Level Rise: The Case Of Norfolk, Va, Usa, Tal Ezer
CCPO Publications
Many coastal cities around the world are at risk of increased flooding due to sea level rise (SLR), so here a simple flood prediction method is demonstrated for one city at risk, Norfolk, VA, on the U.S. East Coast. The probability of future flooding is estimated by extending observed hourly water level for 1927–2021 into hourly estimates until 2100. Unlike most other flood prediction methods, the approach here does not use any predetermined probability distribution function of extreme events, and instead a random sampling of past data represents tides and storm surges. The probability of flooding for 3 different flood …

Freshwater Composition And Connectivity Of The Connecticut River Plume During Ambient Flood Tides, Michael M. Whitney, Yan Jia, Kelly L. Cole, Daniel G. Macdonald, Kimberly D. Huguenard
Freshwater Composition And Connectivity Of The Connecticut River Plume During Ambient Flood Tides, Michael M. Whitney, Yan Jia, Kelly L. Cole, Daniel G. Macdonald, Kimberly D. Huguenard
Civil Engineering Faculty Scholarship
The Connecticut River plume interacts with the strong tidal currents of the ambient receiving waters in eastern Long Island Sound. The plume formed during ambient flood tides is studied as an example of tidal river plumes entering into energetic ambient tidal environments in estuaries or continental shelves. Conservative passive freshwater tracers within a high-resolution nested hydrodynamic model are applied to determine how source waters from different parts of the tidal cycle contribute to plume composition and interact with bounding plume fronts. The connection to source waters can be cut off only under low-discharge conditions, when tides reverse surface flow through …

Temperature Tides Across The Mid-Latitude Summer Turbopause Measured By A Sodium Lidar And Mighti/Icon, Tao Yuan, M. H. Stevens, C. R. Englert, T. J. Immel
All Physics Faculty Publications
Local full diurnal coverage of temperature variations across the turbopause (∼90–115 km altitude) is achieved by combining the nocturnal observations of a Sodium (Na) Doppler lidar on the Utah State University (USU) campus (41.7°N, 248.2°E) and NASA Michelson interferometer for global high-resolution thermospheric imaging (MIGHTI)/Ionospheric connection explorer (ICON) daytime observations made in the same vicinity. In this study, utilizing this hybrid data set during summer 2020 between June 12th and July 15th, we retrieve the temperature signatures of diurnal and semidiurnal tides in this region. The tidal amplitudes of both components have similar vertical variation with increasing altitude: less than …

Scientists and engineers have observed for some time that tidal amplitudes at many locations are shifting considerably due to nonastronomical factors. Here we review comprehensively these important changes in tidal properties, many of which remain poorly understood. Over long geological time scales, tectonic processes drive variations in basin size, depth, and shape and hence the resonant properties of ocean basins. On shorter geological time scales, changes in oceanic tidal properties are dominated by variations in water depth. A growing number of studies have identified widespread, sometimes regionally coherent, positive, and negative trends in tidal constituents and levels during the 19th, …

The landscape of southwest Bangladesh, a region constructed primarily by fluvial processes associated with the Ganges River and Brahmaputra River, is now maintained almost exclusively by tidal processes as the fluvial system has migrated east and eliminated the most direct fluvial input. In natural areas such as the Sundarbans National Forest, year-round inundation during spring high tides delivers sufficient sediment that enables vertical accretion to keep pace with relative sea-level rise. However, recent human modification of the landscape in the form of embankment construction has terminated this pathway of sediment delivery for much of the region, resulting in a startling …

Catch The King Tide 2018: All King Tide Data, Jon Derek Loftis
Data
"Catch the King" is a citizen-science GPS data collection effort centered in Hampton Roads, VA, that seeks to interactively map the King Tide's maximum inundation extents. The goal is to validate and improving predictive model accuracy for future forecasting of increasingly pervasive "nuisance" flooding.
