Nabla Fractional Calculus And Its Application In Analyzing Tumor Growth Of Cancer, Fang Wu Dec 2012

Nabla Fractional Calculus And Its Application In Analyzing Tumor Growth Of Cancer, Fang Wu

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis consists of six chapters. In the first chapter, we review some basic definitions and concepts of fractional calculus. Then we introduce fractional difference equations involving the Riemann-Liouville operator of real number order between zero and one. In the second chapter, we apply the Brouwer fixed point and Contraction Mapping Theorems to prove that there exists a solution for up to the first order nabla fractional difference equation with an initial condition. In chapter three, we define a lower and an upper solution for up to the first order nabla fractional difference equation with an initial condition. Under certain …

Modeling Daily Power Demand In Southern Kentucky: A Single Household Approach, Craig M. Dickson Aug 2012

Modeling Daily Power Demand In Southern Kentucky: A Single Household Approach, Craig M. Dickson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this study, we use a nonparametric technique, locally weighted robust least squares regression (LOESS), to forecast a 24 hour demand profile at the household level and compare it to existing aggregate demand models discussed in literature. Of these aggregate demand models, a quadratic autoregressive model was selected to be used as a basis for comparison with the LOESS forecasts. It was our goal to automate the forecasting process by using the goodness of fit metric, AICCI, for smoothing parameter selection. The statistical workflow was executed using SAS and data was provided by the Glasgow Electric Plant Board of Barren …

Remainders And Connectedness Of Ordered Compactifications, Sinem Ayse Karatas May 2012

Remainders And Connectedness Of Ordered Compactifications, Sinem Ayse Karatas

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The aim of this thesis is to establish the principal properties for the theory of ordered compactifications relating to connectedness and to provide particular examples. The initial idea of this subject is based on the notion of the Stone-Cech compactification.
The ordered Stone-Cech compactification oX of an ordered topological space X is constructed analogously to the Stone-Cech compactification X of a topological space X, and has similar properties. This technique requires a conceptual understanding of the Stone-Cech compactification and how its product applies to the construction of ordered topological spaces with continuous increasing functions. Chapter 1 introduces background information.

Development Of Nabla Fractional Calculus And A New Approach To Data Fitting In Time Dependent Cancer Therapeutic Study, Nihan Acar May 2012

Development Of Nabla Fractional Calculus And A New Approach To Data Fitting In Time Dependent Cancer Therapeutic Study, Nihan Acar

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The aim of this thesis is to develop discrete fractional models of tumor growth for a given data and to estimate parameters of these models in order to have better data tting. We use discrete nabla fractional calculus because we believe the discrete counterpart of this mathematical theory will give us a better and more accurate outcome.

This thesis consists of ve chapters. In the rst chapter, we give the history of the fractional calculus, and we present some basic de nitions and properties that are used in this theory. We de ne nabla fractional exponential and then nabla fractional …

The Effects Of Goal Setting In A Developmental Algebra Course, Richard Leo Hunt May 2012

The Effects Of Goal Setting In A Developmental Algebra Course, Richard Leo Hunt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to study the effects of goal setting on students in a developmental algebra course. This study examined the effects on test scores for students that were prescribed a test score goal, students that created their own test score goal, and then compared to a control group. Three classes of developmental algebra were chosen with a total of 25 participants with reported results. Results showed that students with a goal on a test did not score significantly better than students without a goal, but did score significantly better on a test after the goal than …

Continued Radicals And Cantor Sets, Thomas Tyler Clark May 2012

Continued Radicals And Cantor Sets, Thomas Tyler Clark

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

We examine the formation of sets homeomorphic to the ternary Cantor set by continued radicals. We determine properties of bridges and gaps and calculate the thickness of the Cantor set. From this we apply information from continued fractions to continued radicals to obtain new results. We also consider the measure of several Cantor sets.
