Questioning Reality: The Progressive Development Of Modern Physics, Joshua Lancman Jan 2024

Questioning Reality: The Progressive Development Of Modern Physics, Joshua Lancman

STEM for Success Showcase

Humanity has a tendency to divide time. The past is distinct from the present which is entirely separate from the future. In supposedly 20-20 vision history is neatly divided into different sections, distinct eras with sharp lines between them. What is present and in the future is always modern. What is past is something else with another name.

Yet time is not divided so neatly. We know this living through it: years and decades blend into one another in a non-uniform progression. To divide human history into separate eras is a necessary simplification, as it helps to ascribe order onto …

Strong Homotopy Lie Algebras And Hypergraphs, Samuel J. Bevins, Marco Aldi Jan 2023

Strong Homotopy Lie Algebras And Hypergraphs, Samuel J. Bevins, Marco Aldi

Undergraduate Research Posters

We study hypergraphs by attaching a nilpotent strong homotopy Lie algebra. We especially focus on hypergraph theoretic information that is encoded in the cohomology of the resulting strong homotopy Lie algebra.

Nb3Sn Coating Of Complex Srf Cavity Structures, Jayendrika Tiskumara, Uttar Pudasaini, Grigory Eremeev, Charlie Reece, Jean Delayen Apr 2021

Nb3Sn Coating Of Complex Srf Cavity Structures, Jayendrika Tiskumara, Uttar Pudasaini, Grigory Eremeev, Charlie Reece, Jean Delayen

College of Sciences Posters

In the modern SRF research, Thin films coated niobium cavities are used for the low cost and increased quality factor. Among the potential thin film materials applied on the niobium, performances demonstrated by the Nb3Sn cavities makes this material attractive for SRF accelerator applications giving higher critical temperature and higher accelerating gradients. While the majority of research efforts are currently focused on the development of elliptical single-cell and multi-cell cavities, the potential of this material is evident to other cavity types, which may have complex geometries. We are working towards the development of Nb3Sn-coated Half-wave resonator and twin …

Size-Controlled Synthesis Of Nickel Nanoparticles Enclosed In Carbon Nanocages, Felicity Peebles, Grigorii Rudakov, Gamini U. Sumanasekera Apr 2020

Size-Controlled Synthesis Of Nickel Nanoparticles Enclosed In Carbon Nanocages, Felicity Peebles, Grigorii Rudakov, Gamini U. Sumanasekera

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

We have demonstrated a simple, scalable, and tunable method of obtaining densely packed Ni Nanoparticles encapsulated in Carbon Nanocages (Ni@CNCs). Using a facile method, it was shown that via a simple annealing process of precursor based on nickel acetate and citric acid, Ni@CNCs with sizes varying from 5 to 20 nm can be synthesized by changing the heating ramp rate during the synthesis from 25 to 53 °C/min. The final temperature of 600 °C was held for 10 min, and was the same for all the samples. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) multiple peaks analysis was performed to show large Ni nanoparticles …

Identified Flying Objects: A Multidisciplinary Scientific Approach To The Ufo Phenomenon, Dr. Michael P. Masters

Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Books

Identified Flying Objects cautiously examines the premise that ‘UFOs’ & ‘Aliens’ are simply our distant human descendants, returning from the future to study their own hominin evolutionary past. This text challenges readers to consider new possibilities while cultivating conversations about our ever-evolving understanding of time & time travel.

Florida Science: The Science That Makes Florida Different, Terence W. Cavanaugh Jan 2019

Florida Science: The Science That Makes Florida Different, Terence W. Cavanaugh

Secondary Level Resources

This book was created to assist students with their understanding of how science occurs in Florida. When teaching science or any subject it’s important to remember to begin with the concrete and then move to the abstract. I have found that it has helped my students when I begin by teaching science concepts in a concrete manner and expand from there. For example, when I taught about topographic maps, the students were much more successful in their learning when I started with local topographic maps that included the school and the surrounding area than with places that had mountains or …

Four Derivations Of Schrödinger’S Time Dependent Equation, Sydney Swanson Dec 2018

Four Derivations Of Schrödinger’S Time Dependent Equation, Sydney Swanson

Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase

Physics and the natural world have been studied by humans since the first person wondered ‘Why?’ The Schrödinger equation is important because it attempts to describe a relatively new (to us) and unfamiliar part of our universe, behavior of subatomic particles, and helps modern scientists uncover secrets that have proven useful in technology and explaining our origins. The time dependent Schrödinger equation can be derived from various starting points in Classical such as the equation of a wave, the time independent Schrödinger equation, and Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Why Quantum mechanics exists, useful applications, and cases when it fails or is inaccurate …

Designing A Microfluidic Sorting Network With Heat Treated Plastic, Houghton Yonge '18, Fuming Qui '19, Viva R. Horowitz Aug 2017

Designing A Microfluidic Sorting Network With Heat Treated Plastic, Houghton Yonge '18, Fuming Qui '19, Viva R. Horowitz

Posters

A microfluidic device is necessary to sort nanodiamonds based on their luminescence. We explored utilizing the repeatable shrinkage of heat treated Shrinky Dink (polystyrene) sheets in an effort to find an easier, cheaper alternative to the traditional photolithography process. Our work found encouraging results but the plastic’s capabilities must be further studied to decisively determine its usefulness.
