Fatty Acid Composition And Cholesterol Content Of Some Turkish Fish Species, Sedat İmre, Serap Sağlik

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

It is well known that fish lipids are effective against cardiovascular diseases due to their high contents of polyunsaturated omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids. In order to determine a suitable fish diet, the fatty acid compositions and total lipid and cholesterol contents of 9 common fish species obtained from the central fish market in Ğstanbul were determined. Palmitic (C-16:0) and oleic acid (C-18:1) were the predominant saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. The predominant polyunsaturated fatty acids were eicosapentaenoic (C-20:5) acid and docosahexaenoic (C-22:6) acid. The amounts of cholesterol in fish lipids did not differ significantly. Sardine ({\it Sardina pilchardus}) and mackerel …

Polarographic Studies On The Kinetics Of The Electrode Reaction Of 4-Benzoyl-1,5 Diphenyl Pyrazole-3-Carboxylic Acid, M. Veri̇rşen, S. Erturan Jan 1998

Polarographic Studies On The Kinetics Of The Electrode Reaction Of 4-Benzoyl-1,5 Diphenyl Pyrazole-3-Carboxylic Acid, M. Veri̇rşen, S. Erturan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The polarographic behavior of 4-Benzoyl-1,5 diphenyl pyrazole-3- Carboxylic acid (BDPPCA) in aqueous ethanol solution (76 \% v/v) at 25^oC was studied as a function of pH using Mcl buffer solution. One well-defined wave was obtained in the pH range of 3.3-5.4. This wave, corresponding to two electron reduction processes, was irreversible and diffusion controlled. However, in the pH range of 5.4-7.4 a single reversible and diffusion-controlled wave involving two electrons resulted. The kinetic parameters $(n_a, k^o_{f,h})$ were calculated by Koutecky's method. A tentative mechanism was put forward for the reduction process of depolarizer. Furthermore, the effects of different supporting electrolytes …

Determination Of Structure-Toxicity Relationship Of Amphiprotic Compounds By Means Of The Inhibition Of The Dehydrogenase Activity Of Pseudomonas Putida, Ş. Gül, D. Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Aliphatic and aromatic alcohols are amphiprotic compounds which have both polar and nonpolar parts in their structure. These compounds were studied with respect to the nonreactive toxic effects on the microorganism {\it Pseudomonas putida}. The toxicity of these chemicals to aerobic bacterium {\it P. putida} was measured in terms of inhibition of dehydrogenase activity. The test results, expressed as concentration of chemicals 50\% effective in inhibition (IC$_{50}$), were correlated with their physicochemical properties such as aqueous solubility (S) and octanol-water partition coefficient (P).

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Condensation of methylcrotonic acid with 4-chloro-o-phenylenediamine in 4N HCl yielded 5-chloro-2-(1-isobutenyl)benzimidazole and 7-chloro-4, 4-dimethyl-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-2H-1,5-benzodiazepin-2-one. Methacrylic acid when condensed with o-phenylenediamine in 4N HCl yielded the already reported 3-methyl-1,2,4,5-tetrahydro-2H-1,5-benzodiazepin-2-one and 2(2-propenyl)benzimidazole. Condensation of methacrylic acid with 4-chloro-o-phenylenediamine in 4N HCl yielded 5-chloro-2(2-propenyl)benzimidazole. The structures of all the purified compounds were confirmed with the help of mass and $^1$H NMR spectral analysis.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Chloro-, bromo-, iodo-, nitro-, methoxy- and hydroxy-substituted benzilidene-o-hydroxyaniline were prepared in order to investigate the effects of substituents on the basicity of benzilidene-o-hydroxyaniline. For each substituent, three isomers -- ortho, meta and para -- were synthesised. Schiff bases were titrated potentiometrically with perchloric acid in nitrobenzene solvent at $25^{\circ}$C. All compounds gave well-shaped titration curves, from which half-neutralisation potentials were calculated. The trend in the values of half-neutralisation potentials of Schiff bases were explained in terms of the nature of the substituents. The applicability of the Hammett equation to the effect of substituents in Schiff bases in nitrobenzene solvent was …

On The Türker Angles In The Theory Of Total \Pi-Electron Energy, Ivan Gutman Jan 1998

On The Türker Angles In The Theory Of Total \Pi-Electron Energy, Ivan Gutman

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The Türker angles $\theta, \alpha$ and $\beta$ are quantities invented by Lemi Türker, and are used in the theory of total $\pi$-electron energy $(E)$ of unsaturated conjugated hydrocarbons. We report here expressions for $\theta, \alpha$ and $\beta$ in terms of $E$ and the parameters $n$ (= half the number of carbon atoms) and $e$ (= the number of carbon-carbon bonds). The forms of these expressions are remarkably similar. Numerical calculation performed on a representative set of benzenoid hydrocarbons reveals that the dependence of the angles $\alpha$ and $\beta$ on molecular structure is very similar, and that their ratio is almost …

The Effectof Temperature On The Dynmaic Viscosity Of Acetone Sunflower-Seed Oil Mixtures, Hüseyin Topallar, Yüksel Bayrak Jan 1998

The Effectof Temperature On The Dynmaic Viscosity Of Acetone Sunflower-Seed Oil Mixtures, Hüseyin Topallar, Yüksel Bayrak

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The effect of acetone on the dynamic viscosity of sunflower-seed oil was studied under a dynamic heating regime at temeparuters ranging from 25^oC to 50^oC at 5^oC intervals. Acetone dramatically reduced the viscosity of sunflower-seed oil. The reduction of viscosity was far less with further addition of acetone. A linear relationship was found between the density of sunflower-seed oil and temperature. The influence of a solvent on the density of the sunflower-seed oil/acetone solution can be accounted for by the mixing theory of ideal solutions, whereas the effect of temperature on the dynamic viscosity of the oil solution is best …

Intrinsic Semiconducting Materials On Phthalocyanine Basis, Michael Hanack Jan 1998

Intrinsic Semiconducting Materials On Phthalocyanine Basis, Michael Hanack

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Stacked transition metal macrocycles [MacM(L)]$_n$ with M e.g. Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh and Mac = phthalocyanine (Pc) 1,2- or 2,3-naphthalocyanine (1,2-, 2,3-Nc) were synthesized. The bridging ligands (L) may be e.g. pyrazine (pyz) or $s$-tetrazine (tz). In general, these complexes [MacM(L)]$_n$ are insoluble in organic solvents; however, soluble oligomers [R$_4$PcM(L)]$_n$ can be prepared using metallomacrocycles R$_n$PcM, R = $t$-bu, et, OR, M = Fe, Ru, which are substituted in the peripheric positions. A systematic investigation of the influence of the bridging ligands on the semiconducting properties in [MacM(L)]$_n$ reveals that changing L, e.g., from dabco over pyz to tz …

Characterization Of An All-Optical Device Based On Organic Materials, Hans-Martin Keller, Mark Andreas Bader, Gerd Marowsky Jan 1998

Characterization Of An All-Optical Device Based On Organic Materials, Hans-Martin Keller, Mark Andreas Bader, Gerd Marowsky

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

We present numerical and first experimental results for an all-optical switching device. The device consists of a periodically modulated nonlinear waveguide, where so-called gap solitons stabilize the switching process. The fabrication of Bragg gratings in different polymeric films, e.g. poly(phenylene vinylene), polydiacetylene or polystyrene by excimer laser photoablation was tested. In preparation of further experiments numerical calculations were performed to characterize the device under realistic conditions, including position dependent index modulations and absorption losses. In further time-dependent simulations the transition from the reflecting to the transparent state was investigated in detail. As a main result, the threshold intensity turns out …

Electropolymerization Of Thiophene With And Without Aniline In Acetonitrile, Muzaffer Can, Kadir Pekmez, Nuran Pekmez, Attila Yildiz Jan 1998

Electropolymerization Of Thiophene With And Without Aniline In Acetonitrile, Muzaffer Can, Kadir Pekmez, Nuran Pekmez, Attila Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The electrooxidation behaviors of thiophene and 3-methylthiophene on a Pt surface in acetonitrile/tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate solution were investigated using cyclic voltammetry. The electropolymerization of these monomers and electrochemical properties of polythiophene and poly(3-methylthiophene) were studied in neutral, acidic and basic media. Mechanisms related to the formation of polymers and electroactivity loss were proposed. The effect of thiophene on the electropreparation and properties of polyaniline were also investigated. The presence of thiophene in solutions of aniline in acetonitrile accelerates the formation and causes an improvement in the conductivity of polyaniline films. Thiophene, which catalyzes the polyaniline formation, enters into the structure of …

Xps Investigations On Conducting Polymers, Ş. Süzer, Ö. Bi̇rer, U.A. Sevi̇l, O. Güven Jan 1998

Xps Investigations On Conducting Polymers, Ş. Süzer, Ö. Bi̇rer, U.A. Sevi̇l, O. Güven

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS, was used for the characterization of electrically conducting polymeric materials. In the spectrum of polypyrrole, PPy, the Nls region exhibits two peaks, at 402.0 and 399.8 eV, corresponding to -N$^+$- and -N- moieties, respectively. The intensity of the N$^+$ peak decreases as the material loses its conductivity, hence the ratio of the experimentally derived N$^+$/C atomic ratio correlates exponentially with the measured conductivity. A similar observation also exists between the F$^-$/C atomic ratio both in polypyrrole and polythiophene. In the XPS spectrum of the composite material prepared using polyaniline, PAN and polyvinylchloride, PVC, two different kinds …

Electrochromism Of Sol-Gel Derived Niobium Oxide Films, M. Maçek, B. Orel Jan 1998

Electrochromism Of Sol-Gel Derived Niobium Oxide Films, M. Maçek, B. Orel

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Niobium oxide films are promising cathodic electrochromics that in many aspects can compete with the more frequently studied WO$_3$ films. The films reported herein were prepared using the sol-gel route from a NbCl$_5$ precursor. The electrochromic properties were pronounced for crystalline films that are heat-treated at 500^oC and exhibited transmittance changes between coloured and bleached states of 60 \% in the UV and 80 \% in the VIS-NIR regions. Improved bleaching and more reversible electrochromism of thick niobium oxide films (d $>$ 250 nm) were obtained by lithiation.

Dimerization Of Pyrrole, Mine Yurtsever, Ersin Yurtsever Jan 1998

Dimerization Of Pyrrole, Mine Yurtsever, Ersin Yurtsever

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Accurate ab-inito quantum mechanical calculations of pyrrole dimers are reported. The thermodynamical stabilities of dimers with $\alpha - \alpha, \alpha - \beta$, and $\beta - \beta$ type linkages are compared in order to predict the possibilities of branching in polypyrroles. Calculations employing large basis sets and including electron correlation effects predict the $\alpha - \alpha$ dimers as the most stable form. However, an $\alpha - \beta$ type bonding requires only 1.5-2.0 kcal/mol, and the energy necessary to introduce a $\beta - \beta$ type bond is 3.6-4.0 kcal/mol. These values show that a high degree of branching is possible even at …

Pyrrole was found to be electroactive on PMMA-co-PEMA electrodes.

Heme Transfer Reactions: An Important Prerequisite For Synthetic Oxygen Carriers, Jan Paul, Wenhua Chen, Per-Ingvar Ohlsson, Michael Smith Jan 1998

Heme Transfer Reactions: An Important Prerequisite For Synthetic Oxygen Carriers, Jan Paul, Wenhua Chen, Per-Ingvar Ohlsson, Michael Smith

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Electronic changes of iron- and metal free porphyrins are reviewed in light of their importance to modify the ferri/ferro reduction potential and energy dissipation between ligated carbon monoxide and the porphyrin chelate. Substitutions at positions 2 and 4 are effective ways to exercise this influence. Other measures include exposure to water and modifications of axial ligation, including the \lq three-ligand' case. These measures will also influence the stability of recombined hemin-protein entities, as apparent from the kinetics of heme-transfer from a modified donor protein to apomyoglobin, but the stability appears to be related to the bulkiness of 2,4-substitutional groups rather …

Some Recursive Relationships Between Acenes And Cyclacenes, Lemi Türker Jan 1998

Some Recursive Relationships Between Acenes And Cyclacenes, Lemi Türker

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Some structural relationships between acenes and cyclacenes both H\\"{u}ckel- and Mobius-type and within the same class of compounds were demonstrated by the recursive analysis of their $E_{\pi}$ and $I_{\pi}$ values or the first differences thereof. It was found that the first differences of $E_{\pi}$ and $I_{\pi}$ tend to have certain limit values as the number of benzenoid rings increases in each class of compounds studied.

Heat Treatment Of Maceral Groups Obtained From Turkish Bituminous Coals, Elif Sultan Vayi̇soğlu, Nevin Gaye Erbatur

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The dilatation properties of parent coals and their maceral fractions were examined. In all the coal samples, the main petrographic constituent was the vitrinite maceral. Reflectance of the vitrinite and inertinite macerals increased after carbonization, while the liptinite maceral disappeared and caused large pores in the vitrinite macerals. All of the coals developed anisotropic coke.

The Adsorption Isotherms Of The Bleaching Of Sun Ower-Seed Oil, Hüseyin Topallar Jan 1998

The Adsorption Isotherms Of The Bleaching Of Sun Ower-Seed Oil, Hüseyin Topallar

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this study, the absorbance measurements were taken for the bleaching of sunflower-seed oil with wt. 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 % of clay at 60, 70, 80 and 90°C. Bentonite EY-09 was used as the bleaching clay. Since the heat evolved during adsorption (0.33-1.07 kJ mol^{-1}) was less than 20 kJ mol^{-1}, the forces between the adsorbent and adsorbate appear to be van der Waals forces, and this type of adsorption is physical or van der Waals adsorption. Thus, it was seen that the Freundlich equation was more applicable than the Langmuir equation to the experimental adsorption isotherms for …

Effect Of Alkanols On The Micellar Behavior Of Chromium Laurate, Hüseyin Topallar, Yüksel Bayrak

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The critical micelle concentration, CMC, degree of dissociation, and dissociation constant of chromium laurate in alcohols (methanol, ethanol, propanol-1, butanol-1 and pentanol-1) were determined using conductometric measurements. The results show that chromium laurate behaves as simple electrolyte in dilute solutions below the CMC, and the conductance results can be explained according to Ostwald's formula and Debye-Huckel's theory of electrolytes.

Polymerization Of Pyrrole And Thiophene On Polyethylene Adipate Electrodes, Seyfettin Erturan, Burcu Yalvaç, Sena Toraman

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Polymerizations of pyrrole and thiophene on a platinum foil coated by polyethylene adipate (PEA) were carried out in acetonitrile by electrochemical methods. Different compositions of semi-conducting composite films of PEA/Polypyrrole(PPy), PEA/Polythiophene(PT) were prepared by the electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole and thiophene on PEA electrode. The polymerization was possible only for a certain thickness of the polyethylene adipate(PEA) on the platinum. Conductivities of PEA/PPy, PEA/PT, films at different compositions were obtained. The films were examined by FTIR spectroscopy. The topography of surface films were analyzed by a scanning electron microscope(SEM). The conductivity behaviour of (PEA/PPy), (PEA/PT) films at different compositions when …
