The Deep Bsde Method, Daniel Kovach Jan 2024

The Deep Bsde Method, Daniel Kovach

Masters Theses

"The curse of dimensionality is the non-linear growth in computing time as the dimension of a problem increases. Using the Deep Backwards Stochastic Differential Equation (Deep BSDE) method developed in [HJE18], I approximate the solution at an initial time to a one-dimensional diffusion equation. Although we only approximate a one-dimensional equation, this method extends well to higher dimensions because it overcomes the curse of dimensionality by evaluating the given partial differential equation along "random characteristics''. In addition to the implementation, I also present most of the mathematical theory needed to understand this method"-- Abstract, p. iii

Social Justice Mathematics: Classroom Practices That Give Students Rigor While Building Agency, Emily Marquise Dec 2023

Social Justice Mathematics: Classroom Practices That Give Students Rigor While Building Agency, Emily Marquise

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of a social justice approach to mathematics instruction. While many students have math aversion, students in low socioeconomic communities exhibit this to a higher degree putting them at a disadvantage as they progress through their educational career. More than 3.4 million K-12 students in the United States come from families that earn less than the median income yet achieve scores in the top percentile (Wyner et al., 2007). This raises the question of why so many students in low-socioeconomic settings are not given rigorous content that will keep them competitive …

Elegance Or Alchemy? An International Cross-Case Analysis Of Faculty And Graduate Student Perceptions Of Mathematical Proofs, Brooke Nicole Denney Aug 2022

Elegance Or Alchemy? An International Cross-Case Analysis Of Faculty And Graduate Student Perceptions Of Mathematical Proofs, Brooke Nicole Denney

Masters Theses

Artist Marcel Duchamp once said, ``The painter is a medium who doesn’t realize what he is doing. No translation can express the mystery of sensibility, a word, still unreliable, which is nonetheless the basis of painting or poetry, like a kind of alchemy" (Moffitt, 2012). Just as there is a puzzling aspect of creating art or writing poetry, the aesthetic quality of mathematical proofs is a mysterious and ill-defined concept. Like many other subjective terms, it can be difficult to reach a consensus on what elegance means in a mathematical context. In this thesis, I try to better understand faculty …

Autonomous Eco-Driving With Traffic Light And Lead Vehicle Constraints: An Application Of Best Constrained Interpolation, Yara Hazem Mohamed Mahmoud Apr 2022

Autonomous Eco-Driving With Traffic Light And Lead Vehicle Constraints: An Application Of Best Constrained Interpolation, Yara Hazem Mohamed Mahmoud

Masters Theses

Eco-Driving is a critical technology for improving automotive transportation efficiency. It is achieved by modifying the driving trajectory over a particular route to minimize required propulsion energy. Eco-Driving can be approached as an optimal control problem subject to driving constraints such as traffic lights and positions of other vehicles. Best interpolation in a strip is a problem in approximation theory and optimal control. The solution to this problem is a cubic spline. In this research we demonstrate the connection between Eco-Driving and best interpolation in the strip. By exploiting this connection, we are able to generate optimal Eco-Driving trajectories that …

Parallel Resource Defined Fitness Sharing: A Study On Parallel Optimizations For Niching Algorithms, Blayne A. Rogers Apr 2022

Parallel Resource Defined Fitness Sharing: A Study On Parallel Optimizations For Niching Algorithms, Blayne A. Rogers

Masters Theses

The exploitation of niches by genetic algorithms (GAs) is a computationally expensive, but effective, methodology for solving complex open problems and real-world applications. Niching, differentiated on the modality of sharing, casts problems in terms of the specific resources available. These concepts arise from the broader natural algorithms that encapsulate the ideas and theories used in artificial intelligence. In remediating the computational costs, a study on exploiting niche-defined parallel structures is performed in the contest of the resourcedefined fitness sharing (RFS) algorithm.

Sharing is a natural algorithm paradigm that emulates the use of resources within an environment or population. Defining these …

Several Problems In Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations, Tim Van Hoose Jan 2022

Several Problems In Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations, Tim Van Hoose

Masters Theses

“We study several different problems related to nonlinear Schrödinger equations….

We prove several new results for the first equation: a modified scattering result for both an averaged version of the equation and the full equation, as well as a set of Strichartz estimates and a blowup result for the 3d cubic problem.

We also present an exposition of the classical work of Bourgain on invariant measures for the second equation in the mass-subcritical regime”--Abstract, page iv.

On Cup-Products Of Cofibers Of Maps Between Moore Spaces, Hopf Invariant, And Lusternik-Schnirelmann Category, Marwa A.S. Mosallam Aug 2021

On Cup-Products Of Cofibers Of Maps Between Moore Spaces, Hopf Invariant, And Lusternik-Schnirelmann Category, Marwa A.S. Mosallam

Masters Theses

In this thesis we make a detailed investigation of the cohomology rings of the cofibers Cβ of Moore spaces of dimension 2 by computing the cup products in cofibers and to do so we prove that the Hopf invariant in case of Moore spaces in the zero and nonzero homomorphism case is a homomorphism. We have shown when is 𝓍r,k a Co-H-Map. We calculated the homologies and cohomologies of Moore spaces of dimension 2 and of the cofibers Cβ where β=𝓍r,k. We used Lusternik-Schnirelmann category to determine the complexity of C …

Cheeger Constants Of Two Related Hyperbolic Riemann Surfaces, Ronald E. Hoagland Jan 2021

Cheeger Constants Of Two Related Hyperbolic Riemann Surfaces, Ronald E. Hoagland

Masters Theses

This thesis concerns the study of the Cheeger constant of two related hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. The first surface R is formed by taking the quotient U2/Γ(4), where U2 is the upper half-plane model of the hyperbolic plane and Γ(4) is a congruence subgroup of PSL2(Z), an isometry group of U2 . This quotient is shown to form a Riemann surface which is constructed by gluing sides of a fundamental domain for Γ(4) together according to certain specified side pairings. To form the related Riemann surface R' , we follow a similar procedure, this time taking the …

Hidden Symmetries In Classical Mechanics And Related Number Theory Dynamical System, Mohsin Md Abdul Karim Jan 2019

Hidden Symmetries In Classical Mechanics And Related Number Theory Dynamical System, Mohsin Md Abdul Karim

Masters Theses

Classical Mechanics consists of three parts: Newtonian, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics, where each part is a special extension of the previous part. Each part has explicit symmetries (the explicit Laws of Motion), which, in turn, generate implicit or hidden symmetries (like the Law of Conservation of Energy, etc). In this Master's Thesis, different types of hidden symmetries are considered; they are reflected in the Noether Theorem and the Poincare Recurrence Theorem applied to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Systems respectively.

The Poincare Recurrence Theorem is also applicable to some number theory problems, which can be considered as dynamical systems. In …

Application And Evaluation Of Lighthouse Technology For Precision Motion Capture, Soumitra Sitole Oct 2018

Application And Evaluation Of Lighthouse Technology For Precision Motion Capture, Soumitra Sitole

Masters Theses

This thesis presents the development towards a system that can capture and quantify motion for applications in biomechanical and medical fields demanding precision motion tracking using the lighthouse technology. Commercially known as SteamVR tracking, the lighthouse technology is a motion tracking system developed for virtual reality applications that makes use of patterned infrared light sources to highlight trackers (objects embedded with photodiodes) to obtain their pose or spatial position and orientation. Current motion capture systems such as the camera-based motion capture are expensive and not readily available outside of research labs. This thesis provides a case for low-cost motion capture …

Real-Time Dengue Forecasting In Thailand: A Comparison Of Penalized Regression Approaches Using Internet Search Data, Caroline Kusiak Oct 2018

Real-Time Dengue Forecasting In Thailand: A Comparison Of Penalized Regression Approaches Using Internet Search Data, Caroline Kusiak

Masters Theses

Dengue fever affects over 390 million people annually worldwide and is of particu- lar concern in Southeast Asia where it is one of the leading causes of hospitalization. Modeling trends in dengue occurrence can provide valuable information to Public Health officials, however many challenges arise depending on the data available. In Thailand, reporting of dengue cases is often delayed by more than 6 weeks, and a small fraction of cases may not be reported until over 11 months after they occurred. This study shows that incorporating data on Google Search trends can improve dis- ease predictions in settings with severely …

Numerical Modeling Of Capillary-Driven Flow In Open Microchannels: An Implication Of Optimized Wicking Fabric Design, Mehrad Gholizadeh Ansari

Masters Theses

"The use of microfluidics to transfer fluids without applying any exterior energy source is a promising technology in different fields of science and engineering due to their compactness, simplicity and cost-effective design. In geotechnical engineering, to increase the soil's strength, hydrophilic wicking fibers as type of microfluidics have been employed to transport and drain water out of soil spontaneously by taking advantage of natural capillary force without using any pumps or other auxiliary devices. The objective of this study is to understand the scientific mechanisms of the capability for wicking fiber to drain both gravity and capillary water out of …

Classification Results Of Hadamard Matrices, Gregory Allen Schmidt Aug 2017

Classification Results Of Hadamard Matrices, Gregory Allen Schmidt

Masters Theses

In 1893 Hadamard proved that for any n x n matrix A over the complex numbers, with all of its entries of absolute value less than or equal to 1, it necessarily follows that

|det(A)| ≤ nn/2 [n raised to the power n divided by two],

with equality if and only if the rows of A are mutually orthogonal and the absolute value of each entry is equal to 1 (See [2], [3]). Such matrices are now appropriately identified as Hadamard matrices, which provides an active area of research in both theoretical and applied fields …

On The Double Chain Ladder For Reserve Estimation With Bootstrap Applications, Larissa Schoepf Jan 2016

On The Double Chain Ladder For Reserve Estimation With Bootstrap Applications, Larissa Schoepf

Masters Theses

"To avoid insolvency, insurance companies must have enough reserves to fulfill their present and future commitment-refer to in this thesis as outstanding claims towards policyholders. This entails having an accurate and reliable estimate of funds necessary to cover those claims as they are presented. One of the major techniques used by practitioners and researchers is the single chain ladder method. However, though most popular and widely used, the method does not offer a good understanding of the distributional properties of the way claims evolve. In a series of recent papers, researchers have focused on two potential components of outstanding claims, …

A Linear Matrix Inequality-Based Approach For The Computation Of Actuator Bandwidth Limits In Adaptive Control, Daniel Robert Wagner Jan 2016

A Linear Matrix Inequality-Based Approach For The Computation Of Actuator Bandwidth Limits In Adaptive Control, Daniel Robert Wagner

Masters Theses

"Linear matrix inequalities and convex optimization techniques have become popular tools to solve nontrivial problems in the field of adaptive control. Specifically, the stability of adaptive control laws in the presence of actuator dynamics remains as an important open control problem. In this thesis, we present a linear matrix inequalities-based hedging approach and evaluate it for model reference adaptive control of an uncertain dynamical system in the presence of actuator dynamics. The ideal reference dynamics are modified such that the hedging approach allows the correct adaptation without being hindered by the presence of actuator dynamics. The hedging approach is first …

An Exposition Of The Eisenstein Integers, Sarada Bandara Jan 2016

An Exposition Of The Eisenstein Integers, Sarada Bandara

Masters Theses

In this thesis, we will give a brief introduction to number theory and prime numbers. We also provide the necessary background to understand how the imaginary ring of quadratic integers behaves.

An example of said ring are complex numbers of the form ℤ[ω] = {a+a, b ∈ ℤ} where ω2 + ω + 1 = 0. These are known as the Eisenstein integers, which form a triangular lattice in the complex plane, in contrast with the Gaussian integers, ℤ[i] = {a + bia, b ∈ …

On The Existence And Uniqueness Of Static, Spherically Symmetric Stellar Models In General Relativity, Josh Michael Lipsmeyer Aug 2015

On The Existence And Uniqueness Of Static, Spherically Symmetric Stellar Models In General Relativity, Josh Michael Lipsmeyer

Masters Theses

The "Fluid Ball Conjecture" states that a static stellar model is spherically symmetric. This conjecture has been the motivation of much work since first mentioned by Kunzle and Savage in 1980. There have been many partial results( ul-Alam, Lindblom, Beig and Simon, etc) which rely heavily on arguments using the positive mass theorem and the equivalence of conformal flatness and spherical symmetry. The purpose of this paper is to outline the general problem, analyze and compare the key differences in several of the partial results, and give existence and uniqueness proofs for a particular class of equations of state which represents …

Injective Modules And Divisible Groups, Ryan Neil Campbell May 2015

Injective Modules And Divisible Groups, Ryan Neil Campbell

Masters Theses

An R-module M is injective provided that for every R-monomorphism g from R-modules A to B, any R-homomorphism f from A to M can be extended to an R-homomorphism h from B to M such that hg = [equals] f. That is one of several equivalent statements of injective modules that we will be discussing, including concepts dealing with ideals of rings, homomorphism modules, short exact sequences, and splitting sequences. A divisible group G is defined when for every element x of G and every nonzero integer n, there exists y in …

Phase Dynamics Of Locset Control Methodology, Brendan Neschke May 2015

Phase Dynamics Of Locset Control Methodology, Brendan Neschke

Masters Theses

Single-mode fiber amplifiers produce diffraction-limited beams very efficiently. Maximum beam intensity requires that an array of these amplifiers have their beams coherently combined at the target. Optical path differences and noise adversely affect beam quality. An existing closed loop phase control methodology, called the locking of optical coherence by single-detector electronic-frequency tagging (LOCSET), corrects phase errors in real time by electronically detecting path length differences and sending signals to lithium niobate phase adjusters. Broadening the line-width using “jitter” of the input signal can increase the output power of an individual amplifier by suppressing nonlinearity. The system dynamics of LOCSET are …

Day Of The Week Effect In Returns And Volatility Of The S&P 500 Sector Indices, Juan Liu Jan 2015

Day Of The Week Effect In Returns And Volatility Of The S&P 500 Sector Indices, Juan Liu

Masters Theses

"Previous studies have shown that returns associated with the stock market or foreign exchange's futures show variations across the day of the week. On such study, that employs a modified GARCH model for estimation, shows that returns associated with the S&P 500 stock index is highest on Wednesday and lowest returns on Monday. The same study shows that volatility is highest on Fridays and lowest on Wednesdays. In this study we investigate if this day-of-the-week effect on returns and volatility is present in the different sectors that constitute the S&P 500 index. The data set used provides daily returns from …

A Glance At Tropical Operations And Tropical Linear Algebra, Semere Tsehaye Tesfay Jan 2015

A Glance At Tropical Operations And Tropical Linear Algebra, Semere Tsehaye Tesfay

Masters Theses

The tropical semiring is ℝ ∪ {∞} with the operations x y = min{x, y}, x ⊕ ∞ = ∞ ⊕ x = x, x y = x + y, x ⊙ ∞ = ∞ ⊙ y = ∞. This paper explores how ideas from classical algebra and linear algebra over the real numbers such as polynomials, roots of polynomials, lines, matrices and matrix operations, determinants, eigen values and eigen vectors would appear in tropical mathematics. It uses numerous computed examples to illustrate these concepts and explores the relationship between certain tropical matrices and graph …

Hyperbolic Geometry With And Without Models, Chad Kelterborn Jan 2015

Hyperbolic Geometry With And Without Models, Chad Kelterborn

Masters Theses

We explore the development of hyperbolic geometry in the 18th and early 19th following the works of Legendre, Lambert, Saccheri, Bolyai, Lobachevsky, and Gauss. In their attempts to prove Euclid's parallel postulate, they developed hyperbolic geometry without a model. It was not until later in the 19th century, when Felix Klein provided a method (which was influenced by projective geometry) for viewing the hyperbolic plane as a disk in the Euclidean plane, appropriately named the "Klein disk model". Later other models for viewing the hyperbolic plane as a subset of the Euclidean plane were created, namely the Poincaré disk model, …

Some Combinatorial Applications Of Sage, An Open Source Program, Jessica Ruth Chowning Jan 2015

Some Combinatorial Applications Of Sage, An Open Source Program, Jessica Ruth Chowning

Masters Theses

"In this thesis, we consider the usefulness of Sage, an online and open-source program, in analyzing permutation puzzles such as the Rubik's cube and a specific combinatorial structure called the projective plane. Many programs exist to expedite calculations in research and provide previously-unavailable solutions; some require purchase, while others, such as Sage, are available for free online. Sage is asked to handle a small permutation puzzle called Swap, and then we explore how it calculates solutions for a Rubik's cube. We then discuss projective planes, Sage's library of functions for dealing with projective planes, and how they relate to the …

Statistical Mechanics And Schramm-Loewner Evolution With Applications To Crack Propagation Processes, Christopher Borut Mesic Aug 2014

Statistical Mechanics And Schramm-Loewner Evolution With Applications To Crack Propagation Processes, Christopher Borut Mesic

Masters Theses

Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) has both mathematical and physical roots that extend as far back as the early 20th century. We present the progression of these humble roots from the Ideal Gas Law, all the way to the renormalization group and conformal field theory, to better understand the impact SLE has had on modern statistical mechanics. We then explore the potential application of the percolation exploration process to crack propagation processes, illustrating the interplay between mathematics and physics.

The Complementing Condition In Elasticity, Lavanya Ramanan May 2014

The Complementing Condition In Elasticity, Lavanya Ramanan

Masters Theses

We consider a boundary value problem of nonlinear elasticity on a domain [omega] in R3 [3-dimensional space] and compute the Complementing Condition for the linearized equations at a point X0 [x zero] on boundary of omega. We assume a stored energy function depending on the first and third invariants of the deformation F and that the strong-ellipticity condition holds in [omega] . A surface traction boundary condition is imposed at X0.
The Complementing Condition is calculated from a system of 3 second-order ordinary differential equations (0 less than and equal to t less than infinity) with boundary …

An Analysis Of The Patterns Of Crime And Socioeconomic Status Visualized Through Self-Organized Maps, Jason Carlin Kaufman May 2014

An Analysis Of The Patterns Of Crime And Socioeconomic Status Visualized Through Self-Organized Maps, Jason Carlin Kaufman

Masters Theses

This work is research to explore the association of spatial patterns between crime and socioeconomic status (SES) through the use of self-organized maps (SOM). It had been found that the spatial patterns of crime could be associated with those of socioeconomic, and this work sought to further these analyses in order to better understand how crime patterns and SES were related. To explore this association, patterns of crime and SES were examined in three cities: Nashville, TN; Portland, OR; and Tucson, AZ. Three SOMs were used in each city: one to analyze the patterns of crime, a second to analyze …

Adaptive Wavelet Discretization Of Tensor Products In H-Tucker Format, Mazen Ali Jan 2014

Adaptive Wavelet Discretization Of Tensor Products In H-Tucker Format, Mazen Ali

Masters Theses

"In previous work, the solution to a system of coupled parabolic PDEs, modeling the price of a CDO, was approximated numerically. Due to the nature of the problem, the system involved a large number of equations such that the parameters cannot be stored explicitly. The authors combined the data sparse H-Tucker storage format with the Galerkin method to approximate the solution, using wavelets for the space discretization together with time stepping (Method of Lines). The aforementioned approximation is of the linear kind, i.e., using a nonadaptive method. In this work, three methods for solving such systems adaptively are presented, together …

An Iterative Algorithm For Variational Data Assimilation Problems, Xin Shen Jan 2014

An Iterative Algorithm For Variational Data Assimilation Problems, Xin Shen

Masters Theses

"Data assimilation is a very powerful and efficient tool to use collected raw data for improving model prediction in numerical weather forecasting, hydrology, and many other areas of geosciences. In this thesis, an iterative algorithm [23] of variational data assimilation with finite element method is utilized to study different models. One motivation for this fundamental mathematical study is to provide a potential tool for simulation of CO2 sequestration by extending it to more realistic and sophisticated models in the future. The basic idea of variational data assimilation is to utilize the framework of optimal control problems. We apply the …
