On The Synthesis, Characterization, And Magnetization Of Ln-M-X (Ln = Lanthanide; M = Ti-Cr, Cu, Mo, Pd; X = Al, Ga) Intermetallics, Michael James Kangas Jan 2012

On The Synthesis, Characterization, And Magnetization Of Ln-M-X (Ln = Lanthanide; M = Ti-Cr, Cu, Mo, Pd; X = Al, Ga) Intermetallics, Michael James Kangas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of the research presented herein was to grow single crystals of Ln-M-X (Ln = lanthanide; M = Ti-Cr, Cu, Mo, Pd; X = Al, Ga) intermetallic compounds and to characterize their crystal structures and physical properties. Overall, the flux growth technique facilitated a detailed analysis of previously known structure-types (LnM2Al20 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Yb; M = Ti, V, Cr), Ln6M4Al43 (Ln = Gd, Yb; M = Cr, Mo), and Yb2Pd3Ga9), as well as the synthesis and characterization of new compounds (LnCrxGa3 (Ln = Ho, Er; x ~ 0.13), YbCr2Al20-xFex (x ~ 0.2), Ln(Cu,Al,Ga)13-x, and Ln2PdGa12 (Ln …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Rare Earth-Nickel-Gallium Ternary Intermetallics, Kandace R. Thomas Jan 2010

Synthesis And Characterization Of Rare Earth-Nickel-Gallium Ternary Intermetallics, Kandace R. Thomas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The structural and physical characterization of several early and latter rare earth Ln-Ni-Ga systems, which include Ln2NiGa12 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm), alpha-LnNiGa4 (Ln = Y, Gd – Yb) and beta-LnNiGa4 (Ln = Tb – Ho) will be presented in this work. These systems are thermodynamically located within a copious, robust phase space and provide a rich understanding of how slight modifications to synthetic preparations can yield the adoption of different structure types in a Ga-rich regime. Each of these phases is made up of well-studied substructures which lend an additional angle of apperception as to how their structure and …

Exploration Of New Ternary Gallides And Investigation Of Their Structure-Property Relationships, Jung Young Cho Jan 2008

Exploration Of New Ternary Gallides And Investigation Of Their Structure-Property Relationships, Jung Young Cho

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the investigation of new ternary intermetallic gallides, which may exhibit exotic physical properties such as heavy-fermion behavior, large magnetoresistance, and even superconductivity. In particular, the Ln-Cu-Ga (Ln = lanthanides) system has been systematically investigated by changing a reaction ratio and/or using a different temperature profile to optimize desired phases. Single crystals of Ln2MGa12 (Ln = La, Ce; M = Ni, Cu) have been synthesized using Ga flux and compared to their Pd analogues. Interestingly, Ce2MGa12 (M = Ni, Cu) show enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient of ¡Ö 191 mJmol-1K-2 and ¡Ö 69 mJmol-1K-2 for Ni and Cu compounds, …

Highly Correlated Lanthanide Intermetallic And Oxide Phases: Crystal Growth And Structure-Property Relationships, Jasmine N. Millican Jan 2007

Highly Correlated Lanthanide Intermetallic And Oxide Phases: Crystal Growth And Structure-Property Relationships, Jasmine N. Millican

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Our primary research goals are to synthesize, characterize, and study the structure, dimensionality, and physical properties of new highly correlated electron materials. Intermetallic lanthanide and oxide phases are of great interest due to their fascinating array of structural features and physical property phenomena, such as heavy fermion behavior, superconductivity, and magnetism. The crystal growth, structure, and physical properties of several different classes of materials, such as the Ln-M-Ga (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, M = Ni, Pd), Yb5Pt9, and R2Ir2O7 (R = Pr, Eu) compounds, will be highlighted within. The Ln-M-Ga phases allow us to examine the influence of the …

Crystal Growth And The Search For Highly Correlated Ternary Intermetallic Antimonides And Stannides, Evan Lyle Thomas Jan 2006

Crystal Growth And The Search For Highly Correlated Ternary Intermetallic Antimonides And Stannides, Evan Lyle Thomas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation describes the crystal growth, chemical structures, and efforts made towards the understanding of the physical properties of novel ternary rare-earth intermetallics, which may display signature behavior such as superconductivity, heavy fermion behavior, intermediate valence, and/or large magnetoresistance. To address the problem of correlating these characteristics with structural features, several ternary antimony- and tin-containing phases, Ln-T-X (Ln = lanthanide; T = Co, Ni, Pd; X = Sn, Sb), have been synthesized in single crystalline form by metallic flux-growth methods and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The antimonide compounds LnNi1-xSb2 (Ln = Y, Gd-Tb, Er, Yb), alpha, beta-LnNiSb3 (Ln = La, …

Investigation Of Structure-Property Relationships Of Heavy-Fermion Materials, Robin Macaluso Jan 2004

Investigation Of Structure-Property Relationships Of Heavy-Fermion Materials, Robin Macaluso

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work focuses on how local structural features influence large effective masses, magnetism, and superconductivity that are yet to be understood in heavy-fermion materials. Three sets of structurally-related materials are discussed in light of dimensionality, layering effects, choice of transition metal, coordination, and structural distortions: LnnMIn3n+2 (Ln = La, Ce; n = 1, 2, ‡; M = Co, Rh, Ir), CePdGa6, and Ce2PdGa12, and CeNiSb3. The LnnMIn3n+2 (n = 1, 2, ‡; Ln = La, Ce; M = Rh, Ir) intergrowth homologous series presents a unique opportunity to study structure-property relationships. LnnMIn3n+2 (Ln = La, Ce; n = 1, 2; …
