Like many western universities, the University of Wollongong (Australia) is offering degrees to an increasing number of offshore students. Their usual offshore teaching model involves intensive delivery of course material. Disadvantages of this model include the apparent secondary nature of the offshore academic's role and its unsuitability for technical subjects. In this paper, the authors discuss experiments using Internet technologies to overcome those disadvantages.

In this paper we review the IEEE/ACM CC2001 model. We then describe our proposed core CS curriculum comprising four strands: programming languages, algorithms, discrete mathematics and systems. These sequences are to be taught over the first two years of the Bachelor of Computer Science Degree and need to be taken in parallel.

The University of Wollongong has been seeking ways by which it can attract capable students from the southern side of the States capital city, Sydney, Australia. The paper describes the concept of limiting the required daily travel to the University through an amalgam of technologies, and changes to the core teaching syllabus. Progress through 1994, and plans for full introduction in 1995, is described.
