Essays On Collective Contests And Bargaining., Dhritiman Gupta Dr. Jul 2021

Essays On Collective Contests And Bargaining., Dhritiman Gupta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis consists of three theoretical essays in Microeconomics. The first two essays analyze the properties of a particular class of prize sharing rules groups may employ in a situation of a collective contest with another group, over a private good. The third essay studies a situation of multi-lateral bargaining, where a buyer wants to successfully bargain with multiple sellers, who own an input each, so that he can implement a grand project. The main focus of the thesis is to theorize about and generate hypotheses of the situations summarized above. In the first chapter, we consider a situation of …

Essays In Social Choice Theory., Dipjyoti Majumdar Dr. Feb 2021

Essays In Social Choice Theory., Dipjyoti Majumdar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore some issues in social choice theory and decision theory. Social choice theory provides the theoretical foundations for the field of public choice and welfare economics. It tries to bring together normative aspects like perspective value judgements and positive aspects, like strategic con- siderations. The second feature which is our focus, is closely related to the problem of providing appropriate incentives to agents, an issue of prime importance in eco- nomics.Consider for example, a set of agents who must elect one among a set of can- didates. These candidates may be physical agents …

Price Vs Quantity: Essays On Strategic Choice In Differentiated Oligopoly., Arindam Paul Dr. May 2020

Price Vs Quantity: Essays On Strategic Choice In Differentiated Oligopoly., Arindam Paul Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Industrial economists are often interested in comparing different market structures which are primarily based on their market outcomes and then try to determine the best market structure considering either the society’s welfare or the firm’s profit and sometimes considering both. In this context, the "Cournot-Bertrand comparison" is one such important comparison that has often been analyzed in the literature of industrial economics. The main structural difference between Cournot competition and Bertrand competition arises due to the strategic variable through which firms interact with each other in the market. To be more specific, in case of Cournot competition, firms compete with …

Essays On Economic Behaviour And Regulation., Subrato Banerjee Dr. Jul 2017

Essays On Economic Behaviour And Regulation., Subrato Banerjee Dr.

Doctoral Theses

To sum up, this thesis looks at agent behaviour in the laboratory, in the field, and in the market. Firstly, we impose a requirement in the laboratory (Chapter 2) that mimics a regulatory environment (similar to the introduction of a maximum retail price, or a legal fare subject to which an economic transaction must take place), and study individual behaviour subject to our (imposed) requirements. We then study the effect of real-life regulation on the behaviour of economic agents in the field. While the effect of regulation is seen in the field (that is, we see that many auto drivers …

Essays On Conflict And Organisation Theory., Dushyant Kumar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Throughout the human civilization, domestic (intra country) conflicts have been present across societies, cultures and countries. These conflicts are extremely common as well as persistent. For the period 1960-2006, twenty percent of the countries have experienced at-least ten years of conflicts with more than 1000 casualties per year (Blattman and Miguel, 2010). It causes huge loss of human life, quantitatively, as well as qualitatively. It results in huge number of casualties, as well as damage to the existing output, resources and infrastructure. The persistent presence of such conflicts across the world means that a significant number of people as well …

This thesis comprises three chapters on issues in political economy and voting. The first chapter considers a multilevel multidimensional aggregation problem in voting. The second chapter considers a model of party formation where citizens propose links to other candidates. The final chapter considers a model of electoral competition between regional and national parties. We provide a brief description of each chapter below. 1.1 Multilevel Multidimensional Consistent AggregatorsIn this chapter we study gerrymander-proof or consistent aggregation rules in different contexts. There are several papers that have studied the structure of consistent voting rules satisfying various versions of consistency. Virtually all these papers …

Essays On International Economics In Presence Of Economics Of Scale And Monopolistic Competition., Rajit Biswas Dr. Aug 2015

Essays On International Economics In Presence Of Economics Of Scale And Monopolistic Competition., Rajit Biswas Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Trade theorists, have generally been concerned with three basic questions: Why do countries engage in trade? What is the pattern of trade? and What are the gains from trade? These questions have remained the focal point of inquiry from the times of Adam Smith till the present day. The first two questions inquire, respectively about the causes of trade, and if trade indeed takes place, then about the pattern of specialization of each country in the post trade situation. These are thus questions of positive economics. The third point of inquiry is normative. This is because, gains and losses from …

Three Essays On The Impact Of Global Warming In India., Eshita Gupta Dr. Feb 2015

Three Essays On The Impact Of Global Warming In India., Eshita Gupta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This dissertation consists of three chapters. The Örst chapter studies the impact of climate change on electricity demand in Delhi using daily data on electricity demand and apparent temperature for the period 2000-09. It estimates a semi-parametric variable coe¢ - cient model that allows for a non-linear relationship between temperature and electricity to shift over time, a feature that is necessary to incorporate given the rapid economic growth in India. As evident from previous studies, electricity demand is a U-shaped function of temperature. Three results from our analysis have important implications for electricityclimate policy: Firstly, the rising part of the …

Income Inequality And Spatial Distribution : Firm Location, Product Quality And Welfare Of Poor., Namrata Gulati Dr. Jun 2011

Income Inequality And Spatial Distribution : Firm Location, Product Quality And Welfare Of Poor., Namrata Gulati Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The key idea explored in this thesis is the following: though being poor in itself is a huge disadvantage, the situation might be influenced considerably by the type of neighbourhood the poor lives in as private establishments like educational institutions, health care facilities or credit institutions take both the location and income mix of people into account while making strategic decisions like whether to enter into the neighbourhood at all, and, upon entry, what price and quality to choose for their products and services. Is staying with the rich a virtue for the poor or a source of resentment? Are …

Human Capital And Economic Growth: Theory And Policy., Bidisha Chakraborty Dr. Aug 2009

Human Capital And Economic Growth: Theory And Policy., Bidisha Chakraborty Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Growth theory is one of the most important branches of macroeconomics. Growth theory helps us to understand the intertemporal behaviour of a dynamic economy and to understand the properties of the long-run rate of economic growth. It identifies the factors causing the deviation of the actual rate of growth from the socially efficient rate of growth and analyses the effectiveness of various policies in removing this gap. It analyses the condition of stability of the long-run equilibrium and also attempts to establish links between the long run equilibrium and the persistence of underdevelopment. With the emergence of the ‘new’ growth theory, …

Essays On Dynamic Disequilibrium Models., Arpita Dhar Dr. Jan 2005

Essays On Dynamic Disequilibrium Models., Arpita Dhar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The present dissertation is devoted to the analysis of some problems of economic growth in the framework of what has been called Disequilibrium model.Studies on economic growth have been mostly confined, with few exceptions, to the analysis of equilibrium models. But in reality there are cases where the concept of equilibrium may not be relevant and hence a disequilibrium approach is needed. The present thesis is concerned with analysing some theoretical and empirical aspects of the problem of economic growth in a disequilibrium framework. At the theoretical level, the objective has been to re-examine the conclusions of some existing equilibrium …

Aspects Of Financial Dualism In Less Developed Country., Rajalaxmi Mallik Dr. May 2003

Aspects Of Financial Dualism In Less Developed Country., Rajalaxmi Mallik Dr.

Doctoral Theses

One significant aspect of the economic dualism that characterises less developed countries (LDCS) is financial dualism. This is manifested through the co-existence of formal-lenders (FLs) and informal-lenders (ILs), in the credit markets of LDCS, which stands in stark contrast to the integrated, organised and efficiently functioning credit markets of the developed countries. FLs refer to the large institutional lenders, like commercial banks and other government owned banks that are subject to various central bank regulations. The ILs on the other hand are a heterogeneous lot and consist of non-institutional lenders like indigenous bankers, moneylenders, traders, landlords etc., who are outside …

Theoretical Issues In The Economics Of International Trade And Environment., Meeta Keswani Mehra Dr. Nov 2002

Theoretical Issues In The Economics Of International Trade And Environment., Meeta Keswani Mehra Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In the wake of substantial trade liberalization in the world economy over the last two decades and growing environmental consciousness, the issues of the impacts of international goods trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) on local and global environment are becoming increasingly contentious. Whilst trade and FDI have been said to bring higher incomes and well-being for all, these are seen to act as "magnifiers" of environmental deterioration - especially in the developing countries. On the other hand, growing environmentalism is perceived to act as an impediment to freer trade and investment flows across countries. Hence, the central issues are …

Essay On Trade In Goods And Factor Movements Under Increasing Returns To Scale., Brati Sankar Chakraborty Dr. Feb 2002

Essay On Trade In Goods And Factor Movements Under Increasing Returns To Scale., Brati Sankar Chakraborty Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The central issues that have engaged trade theorists from its inception can broadly be classified under three leads. First, to identify, what countries trade with each other, or what has come to be known as the question of pattern of trade. Second, the consequent gains that trade allows for. And the third, which is an immediate appendage to the second is to identify the redistribution of income due to trade. The first and the third, as is immediately evident, are issues in positive trade theory. The second is a normative issue, which evidently brings in questions of welfare change of the …

Some Aspects Of Banks And Financial Markets In Emerging Economics., Gurbachan Singh Dr. May 2001

Some Aspects Of Banks And Financial Markets In Emerging Economics., Gurbachan Singh Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Liquidity and Bank RunsThe policy of deposit insurance in the banking sector has succeeded in pre- venting bank runs but it has encouraged moral haxard (Kane, 1985 and 1989). This has increased the cost of capital. So the government and/or the central bank need to regulate (Flannery, 1982). In chapter 2, we ask the question - Is there an alternative to deposit insurance? What is the role of equity capital in this context? Is full insurance optimal? The seminal paper on bank runs by Diamond and Dybvig (1983) argues that a lack of deposit insurance leads to muitiple Nash equilibria, including …

Essays On First Best Implementable Incentive Problem., Manipushpak Mitra Dr. Mar 2000

Essays On First Best Implementable Incentive Problem., Manipushpak Mitra Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The theory of mechanism design originated in the mid 1930s with the work of Lange[27], Lerner (28] and Hayek [20] on market socialism'. Further regular was added to their ideas by Arrow and Hurwicz (1). Hurwicz extended them to the general problem of mechanism design. An important aspect of mechanism design is asymmetric information. Information asymmetry typically imposes constraints on the goals which can be attained. For example. in the classic pure public goods problem, mechanisms that achieve truthful revelation of private information are Pareto sub-optimal i.e. these mechanisms lead to a welfare loss (see Hurwicz [24]). When can mechanism …

Essays In Mechanism Design., Suresh Mutuswami Dr. Jul 1999

Essays In Mechanism Design., Suresh Mutuswami Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The theory of implementation or mechanism design had its origins in the debates in the 1930s between Hayek, Lange and Lerner on the informational efficiency of the market economy. However, it was the work of Hurwicz in the 1950s and the 1960s which formalised the insights of Hayek, Lange and Lerner and paved the way for the body of work that followed his pioneering effort. In addition to the considerable theoretical literature on mechanism de- sign'. there also exists a body of literature which uses the mechanism design approach to address specific problems. Some examples of work in this vein include …

On Lipschitzian, And Connected Matrices In: Linear Complementarity Problem., Sriparna Bandyopadhyay Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This dissertation deals with a number of questions related to the linear complementarity problem (LCP). Given A ∈ Rn*n and q ∈ Rnthe LCP is to find a vector z ∈ R" such that Az+q ≥0,≥ and 2'(Az + 9) = 0. There is a vast literature on LCP developed during the last four decades. LCP plays a crucial role in the study of Mathematical Progranming from the point of view of algorithms as well as applications. The questions on existence and multiplicity of solutions in LCP has led researchers to introduce and study a variety of matrix classes. Most …

Essays In Dynamic Games., Saikat Datta Dr. Mar 1995

Essays In Dynamic Games., Saikat Datta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis contains four essays which broadly come under the area of Dynamic Games. All the essays involve developments or applications of non-cooperative equilibrium concepts to games played over infinite horizons. The two essays in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 involve the concept of renegotiation proof equilibriain repeated games. The essay in Chapter 4 discusses how a social norm of slow building of trust in bilateral relationships can be understood as a social equi- librium even in the absence of asymmetric information problems. Chapter 5, which represents joint work with Prabal Raychaudhuri, applies non-cooperative bargaining theory to a context where …

This dissertation deals with a number of problems related to linear comple- mentarity problem (LCP). Given a real square matrix A of order n and a real n-vector q, the LCP is to find a nonnegative n-vector z such that Az + q 2 0 and zt(Az + 9) = 0. There is vast literature on LCP, evolved during the last four decades. LCP plays a crucial role in the study of mathematical program- ming from the view point of algorithms as well as applications. The inherent nature of the problem has led the researchers to introduce and study a …

Three Aspects Of Industrial Dualism In A Developing Economy., Malbika Roy Dr. Feb 1994

Three Aspects Of Industrial Dualism In A Developing Economy., Malbika Roy Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The concept of duali sm which has remained central to the study of the by of economic development, was first developed process Lewis(1954) and then further extended by Fel and Ranis(1966). Lewis concelved of a developing economy as one typically consisting of two sectors: a modern sector identified with industry, and a traditional sector identified with agriculture. Resources flow from the traditional to the modern sector whlle the process of development continues. As a consequence, the modern sector grows and the traditional sector shrinks. Some of the other development economists used other facets of dualism. Harris-Todaro(1970) explained the process of …

Evaluating In Dual Economy Framework The Indian Industrial Performance During 1951-52 To 1989-90., R. Kavita Rao Dr. Feb 1994

Evaluating In Dual Economy Framework The Indian Industrial Performance During 1951-52 To 1989-90., R. Kavita Rao Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The primary goal of economic development is to achieve high rates of growth of outputs and incomes so to ensure high per as capita income and levels of living in the economy. In India, this was sought to be achleved, to a large extent, through a rapid expansion and growth of the industrial sector, as is evident in the emphasis placed on the industrialisation programmes in her various Five Year Plans. However, the growth of this sector has exhibited considerable ups and downs over the years, belying expectations. Quite expectedly, this has evoked substantial debate on the factors influencing and/or …

Walrasian Theory Without On Auctioneer: A Study Of Monetary Exchange Through Trading Posts And A Diagrammatic View Of Disequilibria., Meenakshi Rajeev Dr. Feb 1994

Walrasian Theory Without On Auctioneer: A Study Of Monetary Exchange Through Trading Posts And A Diagrammatic View Of Disequilibria., Meenakshi Rajeev Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The theory of Walrasian equilibrium yields a set of prices at which the aggregate competitive demand for each commodity equals its aggregate competitive supply. Two important issues arise in this context. The first is concerned with discovering laws which guide the behaviour of the many economic variables, especially prices, when the analyst m is out of equilibrium. Walras (1900) tackled this problem by providing an algorithm (or the stÃ¥tenement scheme") which can be viewed as an auctioneer quoting different peices for the various goods an. adjusting them according t the sigus of the resulting aggregate excess demands. This is the …
