Domain wall motion was directly observed at temperatures near to the monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase transition temperature (TM-T) in [001]-oriented 0.23Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-0. 42Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.35PbTiO3 (0.23PIN-0.42PMN-0.35PT) single crystals using a polarizing light microscope, and evident 90°and 180°domain switches were observed near the Curie temperature (TC). Two dielectric loss anomalies were observed at temperatures near TM-T in the [001]-oriented PIN-PMN-PT single crystals, while an additional dielectric loss peak was found at temperatures a few degrees below TC, which was associated with domain wall motion. Based on the domain structure observations, a domain switching mechanism was proposed to explain the novel dielectric loss peak at several degrees …

High-temperature Pb(Zr,Ti)O3/epoxy 1-3 composites were fabricated using the dice and fill method. The epoxy filler was modified with glass spheres in order to improve the thermal reliability of the composites at elevated temperatures. Temperature-dependent dielectric and electromechanical properties of the composites were measured after ageing at 250 °C with different dwelling times. Obvious cracks were observed and the electrodes were damaged in the composite with unmodified epoxy after 200 h, leading to the failure of the composite. In contrast, composites with >12 vol% glass sphere loaded epoxies were found to exhibit minimal electrical property variation after ageing for 500 h, …

The title compound, C28H40N2O2S2, was obtained as a minor product from an anti-aldol reaction between the corresponding N-propionylthiolactam and benzaldehyde. The asymmetric unit contains one half-molecule, which is completed by inversion symmetry. The molecule displays a nearly eclipsed conformation along the central C-C bond with a C-C-C-C- torsion angle of 20.4 (3)°.

We have established a facile and scaleable approach to fabricate tubular graphitic-C3N4 using melamine. The construction of the unique tubular morphology is a result of the pre-treatment of melamine with HNO3. Herein, for the first time, we have explored the electrochemical properties of g-C3N4 as an electrode material for supercapacitors. Tubular g-C3N4 has significant advantages due to its distinctive morphology, high surface area (182.61 m2 g-1) and combination of carbon with nitrogen. Therefore, tubular g-C3N4 demonstrated a good specific capacitance of 233 F g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1 in 6 M …

In this Letter, we use the nanoindentation technique and vary the testing temperature to above and below critical values to study the nanomechanical features of a strong Pb-free piezoelectric Ba(Zr0.2Ti 0.8)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO 3 (BZT-0.5BCT) thin film across its piezoelectric-optimal morphotropic phase boundary. The mechanisms responsible for the Young's modulus and hardness evolution are then discussed. An X-ray diffraction method that can detect the d(110) variation associated with the change in the inclination angle ψ of the (110) plane was developed to quantify the residual stress in the BZT-0.5BCT films.

The stress gradient generated due to electrochemical oxidation/reduction of a conducting polymer in a bilayer actuator causes a bending movement. Here we report a comparative study of the displacement of bilayer actuators prepared using different conducting polymers. The effects of conducting polymers obtained from electrochemical or chemical synthesis route: different polymers (polypyrrole (PPy), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) PEDOT and poly(3,3-dihexyl-3-4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4b][1,4]-dioxepine [PProDOT(Hx) 2]); and different electrolytes (0.1 M lithium trifluromethanesulfonate/propylenecarbonate (LiTFSI/PC) and 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium trifluromethanesulfonate (EMITFSI)) on the displacement amplitude and displacement patterns of these actuators were investigated and compared. The results indicate that the bilayer actuator consisting of an electrochemically synthesized conducting polymer …

We report an experimental and computational study of single-crystal NdFeO3, which features two inequivalent magnetic sublattices, namely, Fe and Nd sublattices that are coupled in an antiparallel fashion. This paper reveals that a strong interaction between 3d and 4f electrons of the two sublattices along with a spin-lattice coupling drives an extremely interesting magnetic state that is highly sensitive to the orientation and history of weak magnetic field. The following phenomena are particularly remarkable: (1) sharply contrasting magnetization M(T) along the a and c axes; (2) a first-order spin switching along the a axis below 29 K when the system …

Noncentrosymmetric praseodymium calcium oxyborate single crystals, PrCa4O(BO3)3 (PrCOB), were grown by the Czochralski technique. The monoclinic unit cell parameters were found to be a = 8.177 Å, b = 16.157 Å, c = 3.629 Å and Z = 2 with space group Cm. Crystal density was measured using the Archimedes method, being on the order of 3.47 g cm-3. Thermal properties of PrCOB were investigated, where the specific heat was found to be 0.63 J g-1 °C-1 at room temperature, increasing to 0.85 J g-1°C-1 at 700°C. The thermal expansion coefficients were measured to be α11 = 7.99, α22 = …

A lead-free piezoelectric material with ultra-high properties, Ba(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3-x(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3(BZT-xBCT) nanocrystals was synthesized via a sol-gel method, and the corresponding thin films were also deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by a spin-coating approach. The BZT-xBCT thin film exhibited a high remnant polarization of 22.15 mC cm2 with a large coercive field of 68.06 kV cm1. The resultant gel is calcined at various elevated temperatures and studied with FTIR/XRD/Raman/DSC-TGA/AFM/SEM techniques for gel composition, crystallization, phase transition, thermochemistry and the morphology of the film. Although the room temperature crystal structure of the BZT-xBCT nanocrystals appears to be a standard perovskite structure by conventional X-ray diffraction …
