Aquatic Macrophyte Communities In Five Sibley County (Minnesota) Lakes And The Factors That Affect Their Distribution, Samuel A. Schmid

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The purposes of this study are to 1) quantify the shifts in the macrophyte community structure of five lakes in Sibley County, and 2) to assess the relationships between the macrophyte communities and abiotic factors in these five lakes. In both the early and late growing season of 2019, point-intercept surveys were conducted on High Island Lake, Titlow Lake, Schilling Lake, Silver Lake, and Clear Lake. At each point, water depth was recorded, and all macrophytes sampled were identified and recorded as “present.” There was not a late season survey conducted for High Island Lake in 2019 due to a …

A Methodology For Detecting Credit Card Fraud, Kayode Ayorinde Jan 2021

A Methodology For Detecting Credit Card Fraud, Kayode Ayorinde

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Fraud detection has appertained to many industries such as banking, retails, financial services, healthcare, etc. As we know, fraud detection is a set of campaigns undertaken to avert the acquisition of illegal means to obtain money or property under false pretense. With an unlimited and growing number of ways fraudsters commit fraud crimes, detecting online fraud was so tricky to achieve. This research work aims to examine feasible ways to identify credit card fraudulent activities that negatively impact financial institutes. In the United States, an average of U.S consumers lost a median of $429 from credit card fraud in 2017, …

Comparative Analysis Of Water Quality Monitoring Procedures In A Small, Eutrophic Lake, South-Central Minnesota, Owen Lott Jan 2021

Comparative Analysis Of Water Quality Monitoring Procedures In A Small, Eutrophic Lake, South-Central Minnesota, Owen Lott

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Understanding the spatial and temporal distribution of water quality variables in lakes is vital for assessing their overall health. So vital in fact, that numerous government agencies are tasked with testing and maintaining a healthy public surface water supply. This study focuses primarily on the efficacy of one of such agency’s procedure for monitoring surface water quality. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s (MPCA) procedure for water quality testing does not account for neither the spatial nor temporal variability of water quality in small Minnesota lakes, including the lake at the center of this study, Bass Lake. Currently, the MPCA assumes …

Aeolian Sand Stringers In The Upper Midwest, Usa: Morphology, Stratigraphy, And Paleoenvironmental Significance, Kenzie L. Shandonay Jan 2021

Aeolian Sand Stringers In The Upper Midwest, Usa: Morphology, Stratigraphy, And Paleoenvironmental Significance, Kenzie L. Shandonay

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Sand stringers are subtle (~1-10 m high), elongate (several km long, up to 100 m wide) aeolian landforms that lack a slip face and generally have a northwest-southeast orientation. They are ubiquitous across the Upper Midwest, including southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Despite their prevalence, the timing, processes, and environmental conditions during sand stringer formation and evolution are poorly understood. This research aims to describe sand stringer morphology and stratigraphy, reconstruct regional paleoclimate, and characterize the timing and geomorphic processes of sand stringer formation and evolution in response to shifts in environmental conditions. This study investigates two sand stringers: Good-1 …

Classification Of Chess Games: An Exploration Of Classifiers For Anomaly Detection In Chess, Masudul Hoque Jan 2021

Classification Of Chess Games: An Exploration Of Classifiers For Anomaly Detection In Chess, Masudul Hoque

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Chess is a strategy board game with its inception dating back to the 15th century. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a chess boom online with 95,853,038 chess games being played during January, 2021 on lichess.com. Along with the chess boom, instances of cheating have also become more rampant. Classifications have been used for anomaly detection in different fields and thus it is a natural idea to develop classifiers to detect cheating in chess. However, there are no specific examples of this, and it is difficult to obtain data where cheating has occurred. So, in this paper, we develop 4 …

Proposed Data Governance Framework For Small And Medium Scale Enterprises (Smes), Rejoice Okoro Jan 2021

Proposed Data Governance Framework For Small And Medium Scale Enterprises (Smes), Rejoice Okoro

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Data governance is not a one size fits all, instead, it should be an evolutionary process that can be started small and measurable along the way. This research aims at proposing a data governance framework by ensuring data management processes, data security and control are compliant with laws and policies. This article also presents the first results of a comparative analysis between three data privacy laws and outlines five components which together form a data governance framework for SMEs. The data governance model documents data quality roles and their type of interaction with data quality management activities exploring how data …

Xtreme-Noc: Extreme Gradient Boosting Based Latency Model For Network-On-Chip Architectures, Ilma Sheriff Jan 2021

Xtreme-Noc: Extreme Gradient Boosting Based Latency Model For Network-On-Chip Architectures, Ilma Sheriff

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Multiprocessor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) integrating heterogeneous processing elements (CPU, GPU, Accelerators, memory, I/O modules ,etc.) are the de-facto design choice to meet the ever-increasing performance/Watt requirements from modern computing machines. Although at consumer level the number of processing elements (PE) are limited to 8-16, for high end servers, the number of PEs can scale up to hundreds. A Network-on-Chip (NoC) is a microscale network that facilitates the packetized communication among the PEs in such complex computational systems. Due to the heterogeneous integration of the cores, execution of diverse (serial and parallel) applications on the PEs, application mapping strategies, and many other …

Examining Patterns And Drivers Of Spatial And Temporal Variability In Playa Hydroperiod In The High Plains Region Of Western Kansas, Luis Lepe Jan 2021

Examining Patterns And Drivers Of Spatial And Temporal Variability In Playa Hydroperiod In The High Plains Region Of Western Kansas, Luis Lepe

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Playa wetlands are some of the most important natural features of the High Plains of the central United States. Playas provide a range of ecosystem services such as groundwater recharge, surface water storage, and wetland habitat. However, playa functions are declining due to land cover change, climate change, and playa and watershed modifications. There are only a few studies that have examined the variability and controls on playa water storage. This project aims to determine how playa and watershed morphology, watershed land cover, and precipitation patterns affect timing and duration of water storage in 92 playas distributed throughout a 10-county …

Comparing Various Robust Estimation Techniques In Regression Analysis, Tracy S. Morrison Jan 2021

Comparing Various Robust Estimation Techniques In Regression Analysis, Tracy S. Morrison

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In regression analysis, the use of the ordinary least squares (OLS) method is inadvisable when dealing with outlier or extreme observations. As a result, we require a method of robust estimation in which the estimation value is not significantly affected by outlier or extreme observations. Four methods of estimation will be compared in this paper in order to determine the best estimation: the M estimation method, the Least Trimmed Square Estimator, the S-estimation method, and the MM estimation method in robust regression. We discover that the best method is the MM-estimation method in this study. The M-estimation method is an …

Assessing And Forecasting Chlorophyll Abundances In Minnesota Lake Using Remote Sensing And Statistical Approaches, Ben Von Korff Jan 2021

Assessing And Forecasting Chlorophyll Abundances In Minnesota Lake Using Remote Sensing And Statistical Approaches, Ben Von Korff

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Harmful algae blooms (HABs) can negatively impact water quality, lake aesthetics, and can harm human and animal health. However, monitoring for HABs is rare in Minnesota. Detecting blooms which can vary spatially and may only be present briefly is challenging, so expanding monitoring in Minnesota would require the use of new and cost efficient technologies. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were used for bloom mapping using RGB and near-infrared imagery. Real time monitoring was conducted in Bass Lake, in Faribault County, MN using trail cameras. Time series forecasting was conducted with high frequency chlorophyll-a data from a water quality sonde. Normalized …
