A Data Repository For Clarifying Water Clarity: A Call To Use Metrics Best Suited To Corresponding Research And Management Goals In Aquatic Ecosystems (York River Estuary Case Study Dataset), Jessica S. Turner, Kelsey A. Fall, Carl T. Friedrichs

Data

This data repository is a permanent archive of the results presented in the associated publication (Turner et al. 2022, Limnology & Oceanography Letters, doi.xxxx). The objective of this study was to illustrate a water clarity phenomenon in the lower York River Estuary of the Chesapeake Bay. The data include light attenuation, Secchi depth, turbidity, and salinity from the lower York River Estuary in western Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, USA from the years 2014-2016.

Living Shoreline Design Guidelines For Shore Protection In Virginia’S Estuarine Environment, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, Karen Duhring Sep 2021

Living Shoreline Design Guidelines For Shore Protection In Virginia’S Estuarine Environment, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, Karen Duhring

Reports

The Chesapeake Bay has about 6.5 million people living in its coastal counties and much of the shoreline is privately-owned. For communities along the shore, the continual shore retreat may be a problem. When land along the shore show signs of erosion, property owners tend to address it.

These guidelines are meant to address the need to educate consultants, contractors, and other professionals in the use of living shoreline strategies. It provides the necessary information to determine where they are appropriate and what is involved in their design and construction. The guidelines focus on the use of created marsh fringes …

A Data Repository For Effects Of Reduced Shoreline Erosion On Chesapeake Bay Water Clarity, Jessica Turner, Pierre St-Laurent, Marjorie A.M. Friedrichs, Carl T. Friedrichs Jan 2021

A Data Repository For Effects Of Reduced Shoreline Erosion On Chesapeake Bay Water Clarity, Jessica Turner, Pierre St-Laurent, Marjorie A.M. Friedrichs, Carl T. Friedrichs

Data

This data repository is a permanent archive of the results presented in the associated publication (Turner et al. 2020, Science of the Total Environment, doi: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2021.145157).

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of shoreline erosion on water clarity in the Chesapeake Bay. To this end, we used the Chesapeake Bay ROMS Estuarine Carbon and Biogeochemistry (ChesROMS-ECB), a biogeochemical model embedded in the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). Using this model, we simulated a Chesapeake Bay estuary from 2001-2005 with varying magnitudes of sediment inputs from shoreline erosion and varying seabed erodibility conditions. Model results were compared …

Associated Dataset: Relative Impacts Of Global Changes And Regional Watershed Changes On The Inorganic Carbon Balance Of The Chesapeake Bay, Pierre St-Laurent, Marjorie A.M. Friedrichs Jun 2020

Associated Dataset: Relative Impacts Of Global Changes And Regional Watershed Changes On The Inorganic Carbon Balance Of The Chesapeake Bay, Pierre St-Laurent, Marjorie A.M. Friedrichs

Data

The dataset is a permanent archive of the results presented in the associated publication (St-Laurent et al. 2020, Biogeosciences).

This study used a biogeochemical module embedded in the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) to examine the relative impacts of global changes and regional watershed changes on the inorganic carbon balance of the Chesapeake Bay over the past century. The numerical experiments contrast the periods 1900-1914 and 2000-2014 and the results are fully described in the associated publication.

Expedition Sediments: Mud's Journey Through The Watershed. Subjects: Earth Science / Environmental Science Grades: 9-12, Jessie Turner Jan 2019

Expedition Sediments: Mud's Journey Through The Watershed. Subjects: Earth Science / Environmental Science Grades: 9-12, Jessie Turner

Reports

Expedition Sediments is a game-in-a-lesson that allows students to explore the movement of sediments through watersheds by moving around the classroom. This lesson explores how grains of estuarine mud and sand move throughout estuaries and coastal regions, with a focus on processes surrounding a highly populated estuary such as the Chesapeake Bay. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to explain how sediments are transported through an estuary, graph sediment residence times in different locations, and compare the timescales of different sediment transport processes.

Living Shoreline Design Guidelines For Shore Protection In Virginia’S Estuarine Environments, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, Christine A. Wilcox, Karen Duhring Sep 2017

Living Shoreline Design Guidelines For Shore Protection In Virginia’S Estuarine Environments, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, Christine A. Wilcox, Karen Duhring

Reports

The Chesapeake Bay has about 10 million people living along its shores (Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 2017) and about 150,000 new people move into the Bay watershed each year. For communities along the shore, the continual shore retreat may be a problem. When land along the shore shows signs of erosion, property owners tend to address it.

In the past, shore stabilization strategies generally were stone revetments or wood bulkheads. Though these strategies are effective at shore stabilization, they can create a disconnect between the upland and the water and typically provide few natural habitats along the shoreline. In the past …

Simulation Of Coastal Inundation Instigated By Storm Surge And River Discharge In The Chesapeake Bay Using Sub-Grid Modeling Coupled With Lidar Data, J. D. Loftis, H. V. Wang Jan 2012

Simulation Of Coastal Inundation Instigated By Storm Surge And River Discharge In The Chesapeake Bay Using Sub-Grid Modeling Coupled With Lidar Data, J. D. Loftis, H. V. Wang

Presentations

Sub-grid modeling is a novel method by which water level elevations on the sub-grid level can be obtained through the combination of water levels and velocities efficiently calculated at the coarse computational grid, the discretized bathymetric depths, and local friction parameters without resorting to solve the full set of equations. Sub-grid technology essentially allows velocity to be determined rationally and efficiently at the sub-grid level. This salient feature enables coastal flooding to be addressed in a single cross-scale model from the ocean to the upstream river channel without overly refining the grid resolution. To this end, high-resolution DEMs will be …
