The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) currently conducts a monthly trawl survey in the three major Virginia rivers and the lower Chesapeake Bay to estimate the abundance of economically important finfish species, particularly at the juvenile stage .. VIM:S has conducted similar trawl surveys in various forms since 1955. Although this represents a 40 year period, variations in sampling design and gear have confounded efforts to produce a meaningful, continuous time series.
