Monitoring Ambient Laboratory Conditions With A Raspberry Pi, Joshua Boman

Precise experimental devices and measurements can be sensitive to changing physical conditions in the lab. The purpose of this research was to develop a standardized computer automated package to monitor and record changes in laboratory conditions, including ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, light intensity, motion, and power outages. The computer-interfaced device was based around an inexpensive Raspberry Pi microcomputer and commercially available sensors. The Raspberry Pi uploads the sensor data to a file used by LabVIEW to further analyze, plot and display the calibrated sensor data in real time and trigger alarms. Ecosystems may exhibit alternative stable states (ASS) in response to environmental change. Modelling and observational data broadly support the theory of ASS, however evidence from manipulation experiments supporting this theory is limited. Here, we provide long-term manipulation and observation data supporting the existence of drought induced alternative stable soil moisture states (irreversible soil wetting) in upland Atlantic heath, dominated by Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull. Manipulated repeated moderate summer drought, and intense natural summer drought both lowered resilience resulting in shifts in soil moisture dynamics. A complete description of each station is located in the station file at the Air Monitoring Center and is available upon request. This network review will focus on the adequacy of the existing network and the changes that are needed. The existing or proposed monitoring stations are reviewed to see if the objectives are being met. The collection of monitoring data results in quantitative and qualitative information obtained from measurements or estimates of the natural resources. These data are most valuable when their meaning is defined and presented in understandable terms to the resource manager. This is the analysis, interpretation, and evaluation process. The result is the documentation of conclusions on the progress of management to accomplish specific management objectives. Such conclusions are used for management and planning purposes, and in particular, for determining managment actions and establishing new or revised management objectives.

This report outlines long-term planning and monitoring activities that occurred in 1991 and 1992 in the Stanley Basin Lakes of the upper Salmon River, Idaho for the purpose of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) recovery. Limnological monitoring and experimental sampling protocol, designed to establish a limnological baseline and to evaluate sockeye salmon production capability of the lakes, are present:ed. Surface-water quantity and quality were observed at 12 gaging stations downstream from mined and lease areas in the Wasatch Plateau, Book Cliffs, and Emery coal fields in central Utah. Measurements of base flow were made at 52 additional sites in the region. The report describes the hydrologic setting of this important coal region and summarizes the surface-water data collected at the monitoring sites from August 1978 through September 1979. Coal mining and lease activities in each of the monitored basins also are described.
