The Pinedale Anticline Project is located in Sublette County, Wyoming, within an area of 197,345 acres. The Project area approximate boundaries extend from Pinedale, Wyoming south 30 miles to the Jonah Field, U.S. Highway 191 on the east and the Green River and the Burma Road on the west. The Pinedale Anticline Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was prepared pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act and other regulations and statutes to fully disclose the potential environmental impacts which could result from implementation of the Pinedale Anticline Project and to solicit public comments and concerns. This document records the decision made by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for managing the public land surface and federal mineral estate in the Jonah II Area Natural Gas Development project (hereafter referred to as the Jonah II Project). The Jonah II Project area comprises approximately 59,600 acres of Federal, State, and private land ownership. Of this total, approximately 56,400 acres are BLM administered or 95 percent; 2,560 acres are State of Wyoming or 4 percent; and 640 acres are private surface/federal minerals, or 1 percent. See Map 1.1 for the location of the Jonah II Project.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) approves the Fontenelle Projects Resource Protection Alternatives (RPAs) for natural gas development and production on public lands. Approval of the RPAs provides for managing the area, in accordance with the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Sec. 202(e)), in a manner that allows for natural gas development while continuing to provide for the existing principal and major uses (i.e., domestic livestock grazing, fish and wildlife development and utilization, mineral exploration and production, rights-of-way, and outdoor recreation) recognized by the land use plan for this area. HS Resources Incorporated and Lario Oil and Gas Company (HS Resources) propose to drill three natural gas exploration wells (one discovery, one confirmation, and one delineation well) on public lands in the Essex Mountain area located east of the Sand Dunes Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in Sweetwater County, Wyoming (see Maps 1-1 and 1-2). These public lands are administered by the Green River Resource Area (GRRA), Rock Springs District of the Bureau of Land Management.
