Climate change attribution and prediction using state-of-the-art models continue to garner an ever-growing focus amongst both the scientific community and public alike. Recent analyses showing discrepancies in the structure of modeled and observed decadal climate variability (DCV), therefore, have engendered efforts to not only diagnose the dynamics underpinning observed DCV, but also to characterize the behavior of DCV within climate models. Extension of the asymmetric Pictet-Spengler (P-S) reaction to bulkier Nb-alkylated tryptophan derivatives resulted in a shorter and improved stereospecific access to the key bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane framework of bioactive C-19 methyl substituted sarpagine/macro-line/ajmaline indole alkaloids with excellent diastereoselectivity via internal asymmetric induction. The asymmetric Pictet-Spengler/Dieckmann protocol with bulky Nb-alkyl substituted systems enabled a more direct and two-step shorter route to this key architecture. We introduce a semi-parametric U-statistics estimator for randomly right censored data. We will study the strong law of large numbers for this estimator under proper assumptions about the conditional expectation of the censoring indicator with re- spect to the observed life times. Moreover we will conduct simulation studies, where the semi-parametric estimator is compared to a U-statistic based on the Kaplan- Meier product limit estimator in terms of bias, variance and mean squared error, under different censoring models.

Dynamic Pricing With Variable Order Sizes For A Model With Constant Demand Elasticity, Nyles Kirk Breecher

We investigate a dynamic pricing model under constant demand elasticity which accounts for customers ordering multiple items at once. A closed form expression for the optimal expected revenue and pricing strategy is found. Models with the same demand are shown to have asymptotically similar expected revenue and pricing strategies, even if the order size distributions of the customers are different. Surprisingly, the relative difference between comparable models is shown to be independent of time and the magnitude of demand. This work is concerned with the long time decay estimates of the generalized heat equations and the generalized wave equations in the homogeneous Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. We first extend the known results for the generalized heat equations in the real Hardy spaces. We also extend the known results for the generalized wave equations with structure dissipation in the real Hardy spaces.

The main tools employed are the decomposition of the unit, duality property in Triebel-Lizorkin spaces and the multiplier theorems in different function spaces such as Lebesgue spaces, real Hardy spaces and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces.

The Grassy Portage Sill (GPS) is a ~2.7 Ga metagabbroic sill located in the Rainy Lake region of northwestern Ontario. The Rainy Lake region is located in the Superior Province between the metavolcanic Wabigoon subprovince to the north and the metasedimentary Quetico subprovince to the south. Two regional faults bound the region and intersect to the east, forming a wedge which defines the Rainy Lake zone. This area was regionally deformed due to oblique transpression, resulting from the Kenoran Orogeny (~2.7 Ga). The GPS is approximately 20 km long and 1-2 km wide, and has undergone heterogeneous strain along its …

This research addresses a multi-base number system (MBNS) for faster elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). The emphasis is on speeding up the main operation of ECC: scalar multiplication (tP). Mainly, it addresses the two issues of using the MBNS with ECC: deriving optimized formulas and choosing fast methods. Concurrency errors are difficult to detect and correct in asynchronous programs such as those implemented in JavaScript. One reason is that it is often difficult to keep track of which parts of the program may execute in parallel and potentially share resources in unexpected, and perhaps unintended, ways. While programming constructs such as promises can help improve the readability of asynchronous JavaScript programs that were traditionally written using callbacks, there are no static tools to identify asynchronous functions that run in parallel, which may potentially cause concurrency errors.

Program transformations that are able to rely on the presence of canonical properties of the program undergoing optimization can be written to be more robust and efficient than an equivalent but generalized transformation that also handles non-canonical programs. If a canonical property is required but broken earlier in an earlier transformation, it must be rebuilt (often from scratch). Some extreme weather events, such as the early season heavy snow and cold weather outbreak of early November 2014, can be traced back to the influence of tropical or extratropical cyclones on the planetary scale flow. Such planetary scale reorganization also occurs in conjunction with serial extratropical cyclogenesis. Potential temperature on the dynamic tropopause (defined by the 2 PVU surface) allows for a dynamically compact characterization of the flow. NCEP Climate Forecast Systems Reanalysis data spanning 32 years are used to provide this measure, and Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) are then constructed to identify our atmospheric regimes. Cascades frogs (Rana cascadae) in the southern Cascades Range of California have been declining over the last 30 years, primarily due to the fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). In the Lassen Region of the southern Cascades, at least six of the eleven remaining localities face extirpation within 50 years. These small and isolated populations are prone to negative genetic effects including reduced diversity and increased inbreeding which could potentially exacerbate declines. Although many studies have documented decreases in phytoplankton production since the quagga mussel invasion, we currently have a limited understanding of the spatial variation and temporal dynamics of phytoplankton production in Lake Michigan. In this study, phytoplankton production and seston stoichiometry were measured bi-weekly near Milwaukee, three times at two northern basin sites, and along three nearshore-offshore transects from May to November 2017, as well as at 5-6 sites on three whole-lake surveys in 2016 and 2017. Abundant sulfates have been detected by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit in the Columbia Hills of Mars, consistent with extensive alteration of basalt by hydrothermal processes. This study uses Iceland’s Nesjavellir geothermal system as an analogue for Columbia Hills hydrothermal alteration. This terrestrial site is home to a variety of acidic and near-neutral waters that are actively altering the Mars-like basalt of host volcano Mt. Hengill. Hydrothermal features heated by H2S gas and phase-segregated steam created oxidizing acid-sulfate conditions at the surface with pH values varying between 3.0 and 2.0 and near-boiling temperatures. A method for predicting the probability of exceeding specific warm-season (April-October) 0-24 hour precipitation thresholds is developed based upon daily maximums of meteorological parameters. North American Regional Reanalysis and Daily Unified Precipitation data from 2002-2017 were used to gather meteorological data for the Milwaukee and Chicago County Warning Areas. Individual artificial neural networks and multiple logistic regressions were conducted for daily rainfall thresholds above 0.5'', 1'', 1.5'' and 2'' to determine the probability of threshold exceedances for each County Warning Area. The goal of this dissertation is to derive expansions for a fundamental solution of Laplace's equation in flat-ring coordinates in three-dimensional Euclidean space. These expansions are in terms of harmonic functions in the interior and the exterior of two different types of regions, "flat rings" and "peanuts" according to their shapes. We solve Laplace's equation in the interior and the exterior of these regions using the method of separation of variables. The internal and external "flat-ring" and "peanut" harmonic functions are expressed in terms of Lamé functions.

This dissertation is concerned with compactifications of high-dimensional manifolds.

Siebenmann's iconic 1965 dissertation \cite{Sie65} provided necessary and

sufficient conditions for an open manifold $M^{m}$ ($m\geq6$) to be

compactifiable by addition of a manifold boundary. His theorem extends easily

to cases where $M^{m}$ is noncompact with compact boundary; however when

$\partial M^{m}$ is noncompact, the situation is more complicated. The goal

becomes a \textquotedblleft completion\textquotedblright\ of $M^{m}$, ie, a

compact manifold $\widehat{M}^{m}$ containing a compactum $A\subseteq\partial

M^{m}$ such that $\widehat{M}^{m}\backslash A\approx M^{m}$. Siebenmann did

Green roofs ease the heat island effect and decrease stormwater runoff. Optimizing green roof design helps achieve these goals more efficiently. This dissertation proposes energy and mass models of green roofs and validates them through experimental evidence.

The energy and mass transfer models proposed in this dissertation can be programmed in any simulation tools, and benefits architects and engineers optimizing their green roof design. Z-structures were originally formulated by Bestvina in order to axiomatize the properties that an ideal group boundary should have. In this dissertation, we prove that if a given group admits a Z-structure, then any semidirect product of that group with an infinite cyclic group will also admit a Z-structure. We then show how this can be applied to 3-manifold groups and strongly polycyclic groups.

The recent direct observations of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration [1-6] have been important pieces of evidence in agreement with Einstein's theory of gravity, the General Theory of Relativity. In addition, they open an era of gravitational wave astronomy that promises to give us much more information on the systems that produce gravitational radiation. Perhaps most prominent among these are binary systems composed of either two black holes, two neutron stars, or one black hole and one neutron star. This dissertation details theoretical predictions regarding such systems.
