Rapid Cryogenic Electrical Characterization Of Materials And Devices Using Gifford-Mcmahon Cryocoolers, Margaret Marte, Bernardo Langa Jr., Patrick Johnson, Deepak Sapkota, Kathryn Evancho, Bernadeta Srijanto, Dale Hensley, Kasra Sardashti

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Thin-film heterostructures are necessary building blocks for superconducting and phononic quantum computing devices. Many new generations of quantum hardware demand extensive materials research to optimize performances at cryogenic temperatures (below 10 K). Here, we demonstrate compact cryogenic measurement systems capable of reaching sub-10K temperatures in less than three hours with the ability to measure AC/DC resistance and dielectric properties of thin-film materials. Our platform utilizes Gifford-McMahon (GM) cryocoolers as effective tools for providing high throughput cooling-warming cycles. We successfully used the GM-based measurement systems to measure 1) the superconducting transition temperature for Nb thin films (Tc ~7.8 K), and 2) …

Generalizing Random Fibonacci Sequences, Prashant Sansgiry, Ogul Duncan, David Duncan, Alexander Foster

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

We consider generalized Fibonacci sequences with recurrence
relation xn+p+1 = xn+p + xn, which have growth rates of the form
limn→∞ |xn|1/n that behave similarly to the golden ratio, (1 + √5)/2.
Following Makover and McGowan’s analysis of the random Fibonacci se-
quence, we find bounds for the value of E(|xn|)1/n for random sequences
given by xn+p+1 = ±xn+p + xn. Finally, we further generalize these ran-
dom sequences using two parameters, p and q, and we experimentally
observe how limn→∞ |xn|1/n contains surprising information about the
divisors of q + 1

An Analysis Of The Sequence Xn+2 = I M Xn+1 + Xn, David Duncan, Prashant Sansgiry, Ogul Arslan, Jensen Meade Aug 2023

An Analysis Of The Sequence Xn+2 = I M Xn+1 + Xn, David Duncan, Prashant Sansgiry, Ogul Arslan, Jensen Meade

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

We analyze the sequence Xn+2 = imXn+1 + Xn, with X1 = X2 = 1 + i, where i is the imaginary number and m is a real number. Plotting the sequence in the complex plane for different values of m, we see interesting figures from the conic sections. For values of m in the interval (−2, 2) we show that the figures generated are ellipses. We also provide analysis which prove that for certain values of m, the sequence generated is periodic with even period.

Reducing Tracheal Complications In Endotracheal Intubation Patients Using Automated Cuff Pressure Modulation, Shrihan G. Babu Jan 2023

Reducing Tracheal Complications In Endotracheal Intubation Patients Using Automated Cuff Pressure Modulation, Shrihan G. Babu

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Endotracheal tube intubation is the third most frequent procedure, performed approximately 13-20 million times yearly in the United States (Mosier et al., 2020). Despite the regularity of the procedure, intubation-related complications such as tracheal injuries, laryngeal injuries, and ventilator-associated pneumonia are ubiquitous due to improper cuff pressure management methods (Ganti et al., 2018). Current techniques, such as the pilot balloon and minimal leak technique, have proven ineffective and inconsistent in managing pressure. As a result, over 71.6% of intubation patients have abnormally high cuff pressures (Ramírez, 2014). Therefore, the purpose of this research was to design an endotracheal tube with …

The Effects Of Salinity And Acetaminophen On The Aquatic Snail Physa Acuta, Michelle Sackey-Ansah, Megan Mackey, Daniel Elias, Jason Doll, Alyssa Brookhart Jan 2023

The Effects Of Salinity And Acetaminophen On The Aquatic Snail Physa Acuta, Michelle Sackey-Ansah, Megan Mackey, Daniel Elias, Jason Doll, Alyssa Brookhart

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Pharmaceuticals are increasingly detected in water bodies, and their presence can negatively impact aquatic organisms. This effect can be amplified when combined with increasing salinity in freshwater ecosystems. Acetaminophen is a widely used analgesic that is commonly found in river, streams, and waters where it is discharged directly. Therefore, organisms present in these locations (e.g., insects, snails, amphibians, and fish) are likely to be affected by acetaminophen. In this study, we determined the effects of elevated salinity (0.68 g/L), acetaminophen (500 µg/L) and combined elevated salinity (0.68 g/L) and acetaminophen (500 µg/L), on the growth, reproduction, and movement of the …

The Boozi Device’S Effect On Aroma Compounds In Distilled Spirits, Drew Budner, Lindsey Bell, Katherine Thompson-Witrick Jan 2023

The Boozi Device’S Effect On Aroma Compounds In Distilled Spirits, Drew Budner, Lindsey Bell, Katherine Thompson-Witrick

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

The BooZi is a commercially available flavor-modifying device that claims to remove the negative flavor agents (congeners) from a number of different types of distilled spirits and wines. SPME was utilized for the extraction of the volatile and semi-volatile compounds within each sample. The analysis of the compounds found in the samples following exposure to the BooZi device were analyzed using a GC-MS. The most significant changes regarding the aroma profile of the distilled spirits were noticeable following 96 hours of exposure. The BooZi device was shown to be effective in reducing the concentration of a number of compounds, including …
