Atomic Disorder Induced Modification Of Magnetization In Mncrval, Juliana Herran, Rishabh Dalal, Paul Gray, Parashu Kharel, Pavel Lukashev

We have investigated the physical mechanism behind magnetization reduction in a potential spingapless semiconducting compound MnCrVAl by analyzing various atomic disorder schemes. In particular, we show that depending on the degree of disorder, exchanging atomic positions between Mn/Cr and V/Al leads to reduced total magnetization due to either spin flip, or vanishing spin magnetic moments. The latter is attributed to the itinerant character of magnetism in Cr-, Mn-, and V-containing Heusler alloys, and to the frustration of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, and is accompanied by a tetragonal distortion, but such distortion alone (i.e., in a fully ordered crystal, with no atomic …

Orchard Hill Church (OHC), a project of the Reformed Church in America denomination, is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Since gaining approval for establishment in 1961 and its initial groundbreaking in 1962, OHC has grown dramatically in attendance, staffing, and building additions. During a time when a vast majority of churches are seeing declining numbers and donations, OHC has been expanding by catering to people wanting to experience worship in an informal, contemporary style with relevant teachings targeted to growing Christians and their families. A rain garden is a depression created in a landscape that allows water runoff from rooftops, driveways, and/or streets to pool or be ponded. The water does not stay, it only captures this runoff and allows it to infiltrate into the ground recharging groundwater instead of running off into our sewer systems and in turn into our rivers and streams. Rain gardens are an infiltration-based storm water treatment management system. The idea here is to add beauty in the landscaping of these rain gardens while also treating home's rooftop and driveway runoff, which allows them to be both aesthetically pleasing …

Dry Run Creek (DRC) watershed is a primary drainage basin located in northwestern Black Hawk County (Figure 1). It is fed predominantly by agricultural runoff in its upper reaches, and becomes heavily urbanized as it travels through the city of Cedar Falls, before draining into the Cedar River. The stream is perennial, however some are tiled and new segments have developed both naturally and artificially. Re-evaluation of the creek is underway and indicates some changes in urban and rural areas. For the Environment, Technology & Society community engagement course, Instructor Susan Salterberg engaged 35 university juniors and seniors from a variety of disciplines from art to information management. These students put science into action through several projects. The course, focused on the impact of consumption on the environment, included several community engagement activities. In one instance, students came up with their own alternatives for Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving). They were inspired by outdoor gear retailer REI's #OptOutside campaign. The structural, magnetic and electron-transport properties of Co2Ti1-xFexSi (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5) ribbons prepared by arc-melting and melt-spinning were investigated. The rapidly quenched Co2Ti0.5Fe0.5Si crystallized in the cubic L21 structure whereas Co2Ti0.75Fe0.25Si and Co2TiFe0Si showed various degrees of B2-type disorder. At room temperature, all the samples are ferromagnetic, and the Curie temperature increased from 360 K for Co2TiSi to about 800 K for Co2Ti0.5Fe0.5Si. The measured magnetization also …
