Electron Transmission Spectroscopy In Atomic Hydrogen, L. Sanche, Paul Burrow
Electron Transmission Spectroscopy In Atomic Hydrogen, L. Sanche, Paul Burrow
Paul Burrow Publications
An electron transmission experiment is used to study the resonances in the total scattering cross section of atomic hydrogen below the threshold of the first excited state. The three lowest resonances, designated 1S, 3P, and 1D, are observed and their energies and decay widths are found to be in good agreement with the values predicted theoretically using close coupling with correlation.

Epeirogenic And Climatic Controls Of Early Pleistocene Fluvial Sediment Dispersal In Nebraska, K. O. Stanley, William J. Wayne
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The change from Pliocene to Pleistocene fluvial sedimentation in Nebraska is denoted by gravel with relative enrichment of mechanically weak rock species and a two-fold increase in largest clast size. These changes in fluvial sediments suggest modification in degradational energy affecting detritus apparently related to deterioration of climate in the early Pleistocene. Cooler Pleistocene climates with increased moisture resulted in greater discharge and carrying capacity for streams headed in the Rocky Mountains and flowing across Nebraska. These streams carried granitic detritus eastward toward the continental glacier margin in easternmost Nebraska. There, streams flowing off ice sheets carrying sedimentary and metamorphic …

Irradiation Equivalence, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma, M. Homayoonfar
Irradiation Equivalence, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma, M. Homayoonfar
Robert Katz Publications
Recent analyses of track structure show that the parameters describing a radiation field are not separable from those describing a detecting system; that is, it is impossible to write an expression describing the effect of irradiation as a product of 2 factors, one of which contains only parameters describing the detecting system, while the other contains parameters describing only the radiation field. From this perspective it is difficult to understand the use of a “quality factor,” applicable to all biological substances and given as a function of the “effective LET,” for the conversion of rads to rems. One cannot define, …

Observation Of Excitons In A Molecular Liquid: Specular Reflection Spectrum Of Α -Methylnaphthalene, Craig J. Eckhardt, Leo F. Nichols
Craig J. Eckhardt Publications
The normal-incidence specular-reflection spectrum of liquid α-methylnaphthalene was obtained for the wavelength region from 215 to 400 nm. Comparison of the Kramers-Kronig transform of the reflection spectrum with the absorption spectrum of α-methylnaphthalene is cyclohexane shows the bands of the neat-liquid spectrum shift to lower energy and display significant broadening. These effects support the existence of excitons in molecular liquids.
A Gastric Battery For Fish, Earl R. Kendle, Larry A. Morris
A Gastric Battery For Fish, Earl R. Kendle, Larry A. Morris
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
We previously described, in Transactions of the American Fisheries Society (1965), vol. 94, p. 193-194 “A device for holding objects in the stomachs of fish," consisting of a 1/16-inch plastic rod formed to loop around the isthmus and extend down the gullet into the stomach. This harness was developed to secure an experimental gastric battery, not reported at that time. The battery was intended to power an ultrasonic tracking transmitter.
After 20-day trials of seven combinations of metals in an electrolytic solution of 0.5 percent hydrochloric acid, we chose gold and cadmium for the battery plates on the basis of …

Nebraska Tractor Tests
All lest result s were determined from observed data obtained in accordance with SAE and ASAE test code or official Nebraska test procedure. First and second gears were not run as it was necessary to limit the pull in third gear to avoid excessive slippage. Fourth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth , fifteenth and sixteenth gears were not run as test procedure requires only six travel speeds. During maximum drawbar run in 3rd gear the transmission came out of gear twice making it necessary to hold the shift lever in place to complete the run.

A Preliminary Bibliography And Lake Index Of The Inland Mineral Waters Of The World, D. B. Mccarraher
A Preliminary Bibliography And Lake Index Of The Inland Mineral Waters Of The World, D. B. Mccarraher
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
This preliminary- bibliography and lake index has been prepared by the author on the basis of information available in the Office of Limnology, Hastings College, Nebraska. Although all source material available there has been searched, it is recognized that many papers, especially those published in regional languages may have been left out. Readers are requested to point out such omissions and any inaccuracies that require correction.
This preliminary bibliography will be circulated among specialists in the subject for corrections to the citations and for suggested additions to the list. It is planned that the paper will then be revised to …

Raman Scattering From Zns Polytypes, J. Schneider, Roger D. Kirby
Roger Kirby Publications
The Raman spectra of the 2H and 4H structures of ZnS have been measured between room temperature and 60 K, and compared with the spectra from zinc blende ZnS. The observed phonons in each case are in good agreement with those expected from the known structural differences.
Frenkel Defects In Alkali Halides, Paul Schulze, John Hardy
Frenkel Defects In Alkali Halides, Paul Schulze, John Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
The method of lattice statics and the deformation dipole model have been applied to Frenkel defects in ionic crystals. For isolated interstitials, all short-ranged repulsive and Coulomb-defect host-lattice ion forces were evaluated at the relaxed configuration. The zero-order Coulomb force was allowed to act on the remainder of the host-lattice ions past first neighbors. We have calculated Frenkel-pair formation energies, ionic displacements, and ionic polarizations in the twelve Na, K, Rb halides. Our results show over all that, in ionic crystals of the rocksalt structure, Schottky defect pairs are more likely to be present than Frenkel defect pairs.

A New Species Of Menoceras From The Marsland Formation Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner
A New Species Of Menoceras From The Marsland Formation Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum
Further study indicates that the Menoceras remains collected from the "Bridgeport Quarries" (lower port:on or the Marsland Formation, Middle Miocene, of the Hemingford Group) are of a new species.
In 1962, these dicerathere remains were considered to be a geologic variety of Diceratherium niobrarensis (Stecher, Schultz, and Tanner). However, later (Tanner, 1969) a generic distinction was revived, separating the Menoceras Troxell from Diceratherium Marsh. Diceretherium niobrarensis was then placed in synonymy with Menoceras arikarense (Barbour).
The new species is an intermediate between Menoceras arikarense (Barbour) from the Harrison Formation and Menoceras marslandensis Tanner, from the upper portion of the Marsland …
Two Lynx-Like Cats From The Pliocene And Pleistocene, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin
Two Lynx-Like Cats From The Pliocene And Pleistocene, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum
A new species (Lynx stouti) of small felid is described from the lower Pliocene of Colorado. This form has several characters in common with the modern Lynx and may be ancestral to that genus. A new subspecies of Lynx issiodorensis Croizet and Jobert is described as L. i. kurteni from the Mullen Assemblage, Cherry County, Nebraska. The relationships of this form to other lynxes are discussed along with the paleo-distribution of the genus.
The classification of the felinae has always been somewhat controversial, especially at the generic level. One fairly homogenous group of cats which has been separated …

Phyletic Trends In Certain Lineages Of Quaternary Mammals, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Lary D. Martin
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum
Evolutionary trends in certain carnivores, rodents, bovids, and proboscideans are examined. Chronoclines are demonstrated for muskrats, beavers, mammoths, and bison. The Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary and Quaternary climatic fluctuations are also discussed.
The University of Nebraska State Museum contains a large stratigraphically controlled collection of Pleistocene animals. This collection provides a unique opportunity for the study of phyletic trends in certain lineages of mammals. Although a few phylogenetic lineages have been proposed (Schultz and Frankforter, 1946; Hibbard, et al., 1965), this has not been done for the vast majority of Pleistocene mammals. However, there is much more data available than this would …

Professor Leo Moser' was known throughout the Mathematical Community as a significant researcher and excellent lecturer. I first met Leo during the Summer Research Institute in the Theory of Numbers held at the University of Colorado in 1959. After talking with him and hearing his lectures during the Institute, I felt that arrangements would have to be made in the near future for a visit to Nebraska. During the academic year 1962-63 while Professor Moser was on a lecture tour for the MAA, I invited him to present two research lectures to the Nebraska Section on May 3 and 4, …

Research Project For Undergraduates: Ionic Thermoconductivity In Dielectrics, Richard M. Fuller, Robert Fuller
Research Project For Undergraduates: Ionic Thermoconductivity In Dielectrics, Richard M. Fuller, Robert Fuller
Robert G. Fuller Publications
Research projects for undergraduates should satisfy several conditions with regards to the physical insight, experimental manipulation, data analyses, and time for the experimental run that are required of the students. These conditions are satisfied by the study of dipole relaxations in dielectric materials using the method of ionic thermocurrents (ITC). ITC can be used to determine the concentration, activation energy, and relaxation time of dipoles in a dielectric. The necessary equipment and some possible research projects are discussed.
The Microtine Rodents Of The Mullen Assemblage From The Pleistocene Of North Central Nebraska, Larry D. Martin
The Microtine Rodents Of The Mullen Assemblage From The Pleistocene Of North Central Nebraska, Larry D. Martin
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum
The University of Nebraska State Museum has had an active collecting program in Hooker and Cherry counties, Nebraska, since the 1930's. The following University of Nebraska State Museum collecting localities have been extensively excavated: Cr-10, Cr-102, Cr-11, Ho-101, Ho-102, and Ho-103. These localities have produced a large vertebrate fauna described by Jakway as the Mullen Local Fauna which he considered for the most part to be Early lllinoian. Further study of this local fauna now demonstrates that assemblage does include Early as well as Middle Pleistocene animals. The purpose of this paper is to report on the evidence regarding the …

The Delaware Limestone (Middle Devonian) Of Southwestern Ontario, Canada, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
The Delaware Limestone (Middle Devonian) Of Southwestern Ontario, Canada, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The Delaware Limestone of southwestern Ontario was originally called a part of the Corniferous Limestone by Murray (184.3-53). Since that time the same outcroppings have been designated, either wholly or partially, as the Onondaga Formation, the Big Lime, Delaware Limestone, Norfolk Formation, Dundee Limestone, Columbus Limestone, and the Dundee (= Delaware) Limestone. As recently as 1971 the names Dundee Limestone and Delaware Limestone were used for the same formation.
Hand specimen and petrographic study of samples from nineteen localities in southwestern Ontario indicates that the limestones of the formation exposed on the Niagara peninsula are intermediate in type between the …

Influence Of An External Electric Field On The Charge Transfer State Of The Tcne-Trans-Stilbene Molecular Complex, Craig J. Eckhardt
Craig J. Eckhardt Publications
An experimental investigation of the effect of an external electric field on the absorption spectrum of the tetracyanoethylene-trans-stilbene molecular complex in cyclohexane solution yielded values of 1.1±0.1 D for the ground state electric dipole moment and 10.5±0.9 D for the change of the electric dipole moment upon transition to the charge transfer excited state. The ground state electric dipole moment determined by the electro-optic effect is in agreement with the value of 1.4±0.5 D obtained from the dielectric constant measurements made on solutions of the complex. The directions of the transition moment, the ground state electric dipole moment, and the …

Schottky Defects In Alkali Halides, Paul D. Schulze, John R. Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
The method of lattice statics and the deformation-dipole model have been applied to Schottky defects in ionic crystals in approximations higher than zero order. For an isolated vacancy, all host-lattice-ion potential energy functions for short-ranged repulsive and Coulomb-defect forces were expanded to terms quadratic in the displacements and dipole moments, and the resulting forces were allowed to act on the first and/or second neighbors to the vacancy. The zero-order Coulomb force was allowed to act on the remainder of the host-lattice ions past first and/or second neighbors. The vacancy and Schottky-pair-formation energies in the 12 Na, K, Rb halides have …
