United States Patent: Antenna Guy Fitting, Robert Katz Dec 1950

United States Patent: Antenna Guy Fitting, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

The invention to be hereinafter described relates to coupling devices for the attaching of fixed wire antenna to aircraft.

Heretofore, it has been the general practice to make connections between the fixed wire antenna and aircraft by wrapping the antenna wire about a thimble or like device, as in making a splice.

This practice resulted in a number of sharp points and rough surfaces whose susceptibility to corona discharge is well known. This corona discharge resulted in bad weather extremely difficult or dangerous due to interruption of radio navigation and communication services.

The present invention is designed to overcome the …

Application Of X-Ray Technique To The Detection Of Internal Insect Infestation Of Grain, Max Milner, Milford R. Lee, Robert Katz Dec 1950

Application Of X-Ray Technique To The Detection Of Internal Insect Infestation Of Grain, Max Milner, Milford R. Lee, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

During the course of a comprehensive investigation of methods for the determination of internal insect infestation in commercial wheat, radiographic techniques have been developed at this station which provide satisfactory delineation of internal infestation. We have applied these techniques to the observation of the growth of such insects as granary weevil, Sitophilus granaries L., and rice weevil, Sitophilus oryza L., from the hatching of the egg within the kernel through larval and pupal growth to emergence as a mature insect. Although considerable detail is always lost in the reproduction of radiographs during engraving and printing, the accompanying figures (1, …

Test 454: Dodge Power Wagon T137, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary. All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University. Unless otherwise noted, each tractor was apparently in good condition at the end of the testing …

A Simple Experiment On Heat, Robert Katz Nov 1950

A Simple Experiment On Heat, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

This experiment requires apparatus consisting of two ring stands, two bunsen burners, safety matches, a sheet of hard asbestos board and a sheet of aluminum of approximately the same dimensions (6 in. long by 3½ in. wide by ⅛ in. thick). The ring stands are set side-by-side with the sheet of aluminum on one and the sheet of asbestos on the other. Two matches are placed on each sheet; one in the middle directly above the bunsen burner and one on the edge, two or three inches away. In what order will the matches catch fire after the burners are …

Effect Of Stubble Mulching On Number And Activity Of Earthworms, S. P. Teotia, F. L. Duley, T. M. Mccalla

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

A survey of earthworm population under different cropping systems was made under stubble mulch farming and where the residue was plowed under. The influence of earthworms on some of the important physical and biological properties of the soil was studied. Their role in the decomposition of crop residues was also determined.

EXPLANATION OF TEST REPORT: John Deere MC TEST A: The manufacturer's representative operates the tractor for a minimum of 12 hours using light to heavy drawbar loads in each gear. This serves as a period for limber up, general observation and adjustments. Adjustments that are permissible include valve tappet clearance, breaker ,point gap, spark plug gaps, clutch and others of a similar nature. No new parts or accessories can be installed without having mention made of it in the report. No data' are recorded during this preliminary run except the time that the engine is operated. The Pleistocene Geology Of The Middle ·Portion Of The Elkhorn River Valley, W. D. Frankforter Jul 1950

The Pleistocene Geology Of The Middle ·Portion Of The Elkhorn River Valley, W. D. Frankforter

Papers from the University Studies series (University of Nebraska)

The present report is a physiographic and paleontologic approach to the Pleistocene history of a portion of the Elkhorn River Valley in parts of Dodge, Cuming and Stanton counties in northeastern Nebraska. The area is important for correlation of deposits between the glacial and periglacial regions. Some of the critical stratigraphic units used for correlation in the Pleistocene of these regions are present in close association with the tills and contain fossils which make possible reliable statements on contemporaneity of deposits. The subsequent geologic history and present physiographic expression of this area have been greatly controlled and influenced by the …

It's Time To Take Stock Apr 1950

It's Time To Take Stock

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Staff Publications

Likening colleges and universities to the automobile industry may seem far-fetched, but is it? Each is engaged in fashioning and selling necessary products- one trained men, the other mechanical equipment. Both entered the post-war years with production at low ebb; unable to satisfy pent-up customer demands. Time and high-speed assembly lines have bridged the gap of gas buggy shortage. The impact of selective buying by a discriminating public is now real cause for concern among some of the motor moguls. Rumor has had it that schools teaching wildlife management are overproducing. We decided to gather facts and opinions at the …

Disintegration Of Te121 And Te123 Isomers, Robert Katz, R. D. Hill, M. Goldhaber Apr 1950

Disintegration Of Te121 And Te123 Isomers, Robert Katz, R. D. Hill, M. Goldhaber

Robert Katz Publications

Line intensities in the conversion electron spectra of Te121 and Te123 were evaluated in a variable field, 180° focusing beta-ray spectrograph. Electron-electron coincidences were obtained between the transition pairs 82-213 kev in Te121 and 88.5-159 kev in Te123. Decay schemes for the two isomers are shown.

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla Mar 1950

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

SUMMARY

Laboratory tests were made to determine the effectiveness of different compounds and microbial groups in increasing the stability of Peorian loess lumps against the action of falling water drops. The influence of these on percolation tests in the laboratory was also determined.

Many organic substances-dextrose, sucrose, starch, peptone, cullulose, and gum arabic-did not themselves contribute directly to soil-structure stability, though these substances do furnish energy material for soil microorganisms, which can convert them readily into either microbial tissue or decomposition products that increase soil-structure stability. Lignin, proteins, oils, fats, waxes, resin, and paraffin increased the stability of lumps of …

Public Health Reports, Clarence M. Tarzwell Feb 1950

Public Health Reports, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Staff Publications

Preliminary tests with DDT for the control of mosquitoes, forest insects, and agricultural pests demonstrated that it was toxic to a wide variety of animal life. Because there were indications that the new insecticide would be widely used, apprehension was expressed by some groups that its extensive or indiscriminate use would cause extensive harm to wildlife.

The desirability of carefully controlled use was early recognized by those in charge of extensive programs for the control of insects of public health importance. A joint statement of policy for the use of DDT issued early in 1945 (1) by the Army and …
