Irradiation of 3-methoxy-3-aryl-3H-1-oxacyclopenta[l]phenanthren-2-one derivatives 5a–d resulted in singlet-mediated decarbonylation reaction leading to the formation of phenanthrene derivatives 9a–d. The structure of the photoproduct was unequivocally established on the basis of X-ray crystallographic analysis.

Paranets: A Parallel Network Architecture For The Future Internet, Khaled Harras, Abderrahmen Mtibaa

The evolution of networking technologies and portable devices has led users to expect connectivity anytime and everywhere. We have reached the point of seeing networking occur underwater, via aerial devices, and across space. While researchers push the true boundaries of networking to serve a wide range of environments, there is the challenge of providing robust network connectivity beyond the boundaries of the core internet, defined by fiber optics and well-organized backbones. As the internet edges expand, the expectation is that connectivity will be as good, in terms of high bandwidth and minimal interruption, as anywhere in the core. Such an …

The title compound, C18H18O2, which exhibits blue emission in the solid state, is an intermediate in the preparation of liquid crystals and polymers. The molecule is located on an inversion centre. In the crystal, molecules are arranged in a herringbone motif.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C12H8Cl4N2, molecules lie on crystallographic twofold axes at the centre of the C-C bonds linking the benzene rings, such that the asymmetric unit consists of a half-molecule. The individual molecules participate in intermolecular N-H...N, N-H...Cl, C-H...Cl and Cl...Cl [3.4503 (3) Å] interactions.

Mutation Size Optimizes Speciation In An Evolutionary Model, Nathan Dees, Sonya Bahar Aug 2010

Mutation Size Optimizes Speciation In An Evolutionary Model, Nathan Dees, Sonya Bahar

Physics Faculty Works

The role of mutation rate in optimizing key features of evolutionary dynamics has recently been investigated in various computational models. Here, we address the related question of how maximum mutation size affects the formation of species in a simple computational evolutionary model. We find that the number of species is maximized for intermediate values of a mutation size parameter μ; the result is observed for evolving organisms on a randomly changing landscape as well as in a version of the model where negative feedback exists between the local population size and the fitness provided by the landscape. The same result …

Individual molecules of the title compound, C24H19N, do not participate in hydrogen-bonding interactions due to the steric bulk of the phenyl rings ortho to the amine. The dihedral angles between the central ring and the pendant rings are 68.26 (10), 55.28 (10) and 30.61 (11)°.

We present high-resolution, near-infrared NIRSPEC observations of the fundamental rovibrational CO and H+ 3 R(1,0), R(1,1) u , and Q(1,0) transitions toward three early-type young stars: MWC 1080, MWC 349, and LkHα 101. These observations were performed for the purpose of constraining the physical characteristics of the interstellar material along each line of sight. Toward MWC 1080, we detected strong CO absorption and determined a column density upper limit of 1.4 × 1014 cm–2 for H+ 3. We infer that there is very little diffuse material along the line of sight toward MWC 1080 and that the CO absorption is …

New Chiral Phosphoramidite Complexes Of Iron As Catalytic Precursors In The Oxidation Of Activated Methylene Groups, Pushkar Shejwalkar, Nigam Rath, Eike Bauer Apr 2010

New Chiral Phosphoramidite Complexes Of Iron As Catalytic Precursors In The Oxidation Of Activated Methylene Groups, Pushkar Shejwalkar, Nigam Rath, Eike Bauer

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

New phosphoramidite complexes of iron were synthesized and structurally characterized. Reaction of the known chiral phosphoramidites (RO)2PNR’2 (R = binaphthyl, R’ = CH3, 1a; R = binaphthyl, R’ = benzyl, 1b) with [FeBr(Cp)(CO)2] afforded the title compounds [FeBr(Cp)(CO)(1a,b)] (4a,b) in 34 and 65 % isolated yields as mixtures of diastereomers, since both the metal and the ligand are stereogenic. Similarly, reaction of 1b with [Fe(Cp)I(CO)2] in the presence of catalytic [Fe(Cp)(CO)2]2 afforded [Fe(Cp)I(CO)(1b)] (5b) in 81% yield as a mixture of diastereomers. The molecular structures of 4a, 4b and 5 were determined, revealing a pseudo octahedral coordination geometry about the …
