An expression for the spacetime absorption coefficient of a scalar field in a five dimensional, near extremal black hole background is derived, which has the same form as that presented by Maldacena and Strominger, but is valid over a larger, U-duality invariant region of parameter space and in general disagrees with the corresponding D-brane result. We develop an argument, based on D-brane thermodynamics, which specifies the range of parameters over which agreement should be expected. For neutral emission, the spacetime and D-brane results agree over this range. However, for charged emission, we find disagreement in the `Fat Black Hole' regime, …

We report the results of our CO J = 4 → 3 line and rest-frame 650 μm continuum observations of the z = 0.93 hyperluminous infrared galaxy FSC 15307+3252 using the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. No line or continuum emission was detected, but the derived limits provide a useful constraint on the temperature, emissivity, and mass of the cold dust associated with FSC 15307+3252 and its molecular gas content. The 3 σ upper limit on the velocity-integrated CO (4-3) line flux is 1.6 Jy km s-1 (for ΔV = 300 km s-1). This corresponds to a surprisingly small total molecular …

We report the detection of CO (3→2) emission from the submillimeter-selected hyperluminous galaxy SMM 02399-0136. This galaxy is the brightest source detected in the recent Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array surveys of the submillimeter sky. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identified as a narrow-line active galactic nucleus/starburst galaxy at z=2.8. The CO emission is unresolved, θlesssim5'', and is coincident in redshift and position with the optical counterpart. The molecular gas mass derived from the CO observations is 8×1010 h−275 M_{{\odot}}, after correcting for a lensing amplification factor of 2.5. The reaction 10B(γ,p) has been studied using tagged photons of mean energies Eγ=57.6 and 72.9 MeV. Angular distributions and derived single-particle momentum distributions for protons leading to the ground state of 9Be and higher excited states are compared to various calculations made using model parameters constrained by 10B(e,e′p)9Be and 9Be(p,p′)9Be measurements. The effects of varying final-state interactions (including channel couplings) and meson exchange currents are considered. A sizable discrepancy between direct-knockout calculations and the experimental results is observed. If meson exchange currents are included in an approximate fashion, a good description of the 10B(γ,p0)9Be data is found.

Here we review cases where initiation of morphogenesis, including the differentiation of specialized cells and tissues, has clearly evolved due to cyclical symbiont integration. For reasons of space, our examples are drawn chiefly from the plant, fungal and bacterial kingdoms. Partners live in symbioses and show unique morphological specializations that result when they directly and cyclically interact. We include here brief citations to relevant literature where plant, bacterial or fungal partners alternate independent with entirely integrated living. The analysis of atmospheric circulation anomalies related to snowfall eVents on Sajama volcano (Bolivian Andes) provides important information for the calibration of an ice core, recently recovered from the summjt. Seventeen precipitation episodes were recorded on Sajama volcano during the 1996/1997 summer season (November 1996 to Marcb 1997) by snow depth sensors and additional measurements of an automatic weather station located on the summit. The dynamic properties of the atomic nucleus depend strongly on correlations between the nucleons. We present a combined analysis of inelastic electron-scattering data and electron-induced proton knockout measurements in an effort to obtain phenomenological information on nucleon-nucleon correlations. Our results indicate that the ratio of radial wave functions extracted from precise 10B(e,e′) and 10B(e,e′p) measurements evolve from an interior depression for small Em, characteristic of short-range correlations, to a surface-peaked enhancement for larger Em, characteristic of long-range correlations. This observation can be interpreted in terms of the nucleon effective mass.

An automated weather station was installed in October 1996 at the summit of Nevado Sajama, located in the western Andean Cordillera of Bolivia (6542 m, 18°06¢S, 68°53¢W). Meteorological conditions on the mountain are being observed to improve the calibration of geochemical variations within tropical ice cores. This article documents the design and operation of the station and presents a discussion of measurements made through the first annual cycle. Variables analyzed include pressure, incoming solar radiation, air temperature, humidity, wind, and snow accumulation. We have searched for redshifted neutral hydrogen 21 cm absorption toward sources from the Stickel et al. "red quasar" subsample. The red quasar subsample is taken from the 1 Jy sample of flat-spectrum radio sources and is comprised of the 15 sources that are undetected on the POSS. Five of these red quasars have been searched for redshifted H I 21 cm absorption to optical depth levels of a few percent, and four show strong absorption, with neutral hydrogen column densities between 4 and 80 × 1018 × (Ts/f) cm-2. Inocula from organic-rich black muds immediately underlying intertidal laminated microbial mats dominated by Microcoleus chthonoplastes yielded large, variable diameter spirochetes. These unusual spirochetes, previously reported only from the Alfacs Peninsula at the delta of the Ebro river in northeast Spain, contain striking arrays of cytoplasmic granules packed into their protoplasmic cylinders. On several occasions, both in summer and winter, the huge spirochetes were recognized in samples from mats growing in the Sippewissett salt marsh at Woods Hole Massachusetts. We report imaging of CO (2-1) emission in the nucleus of M51 at 1'' (47 pc) resolution. Molecular gas is found closely associated with the nuclear radio jet and the X-shaped dust absorption feature seen in the Hubble Space Telescope images. The CO emission lies along the side of the nuclear radio continuum "jet." The strongest molecular emission is not symmetric in either position or velocity with respect to the nucleus—the dominant feature is at redshifted velocities and peaks 1'' to the west of the radio/optical nucleus. We try to explain the unusually high far-infrared emission seen by IRAS in the double-lobed radio-loud quasars 3C 47, 3C 207 and 3C 334. High resolution cm–mm observations were carried out to determine their radio core spectra, which are subsequently extrapolated to the far-infrared in order to determine the strength of the synchrotron far-infrared emission. The extrapolated flux densities being considerably lower than the observed values, a significant nonthermal far-infrared component is unlikely in the case of 3C 47 and 3C 334. However, this component could be responsible for the far-infrared brightness of 3C 207. Our analysis demonstrates that nonthermal …

A study of 2.6 mm CO J = 1 → 0 and far-infrared (FIR) emission in a distance-limited (z < 0.03) complete sample of Hickson compact group (HCG) galaxies was conducted in order to examine the effects of their unique environment on the interstellar medium of component galaxies and to search for a possible enhancement of star formation and nuclear activity. Ubiquitous tidal interactions in these dense groups would predict enhanced activities among the HCG galaxies compared to isolated galaxies. Instead, their CO and FIR properties (thus, "star formation efficiency") are surprisingly similar to isolated spirals. The CO data for 80 HCG galaxies presented here (including 10 obtained from the literature) indicate that the spirals globally show the same H2 content as the isolated comparison sample, although 20% are deficient in CO emission. Because of their large optical luminosity, low metallicity is not likely the main cause for the low CO luminosity. The CO deficiency appears linked with the group evolution, and gas exhaustion through past star formation and removal of the external gas reserve by tidal stripping of the outer H I disk offer a possible explanation. The IRAS data for the entire redshift-limited complete sample of 161 HCG galaxies were reanalyzed using ADDSCAN/SCANPI, improving the sensitivity by a factor of 3-5 over the existing Point Source Catalog (PSC) and resolving better the contribution from individual galaxies. The new analysis of the IRAS data confirms the previous suggestion that FIR emission in HCG galaxies is similar to isolated, Virgo Cluster, and weakly interacting galaxies. Their H2 and FIR characteristics yield a star formation efficiency that is similar to that of these comparison samples. A factor 2 enhancement in the 25-100 μm flux ratio among the HCG spirals is found, which suggests intense localized nuclear starburst activity similar to that of H II galaxies. A number of early-type galaxies in HCGs are detected in CO and FIR, lending further support to the idea that tidal interactions and tidally induced evolution of the groups and member galaxies are important in our sample.

An ocean simulation of the “greenhouse” climate of the Late Cretaceous, about 80 million years ago (Ma), demonstrates that warm salty deep water, consistent with proxy climate data, can be formed by cooling in the high latitude Southern Hemisphere. This is contrary to the long standing hypothesis of deep water formation due to evaporation over low latitude marginal seas. A reduced equator to pole temperature gradient is maintained with a poleward ocean heat transport that is not larger than today's.
