Defects And Dark Current In Organic Photovoltaics And Impacts On Device Physics, Xin Jiang Nov 2013

Defects And Dark Current In Organic Photovoltaics And Impacts On Device Physics, Xin Jiang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we discussed the shape, energy level and density of defects in Organic Photovoltaic (OPV) devices by both theoretical and experimental methods. The energy band structure and intrinsic junctions of general standard and inverted OPV devices are investigated in detail. Transportation of separated holes and electrons in both structures are well analyzed. In chapter II, we developed a Monte-Carlo model to simulate charge transport process in organic materials. Marcus theory is applied to calculate the carrier transfer rate to build up hopping process in ideal lattices. Results of this model showed several properties of carriers regarding mobility, reorganization …

Development Of A Biosensor For Investigating Membrane Curvature Sorting, Joshua C. Black Nov 2013

Development Of A Biosensor For Investigating Membrane Curvature Sorting, Joshua C. Black

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The physical structure of cellular membranes plays a critical role in lipid and protein sorting. A novel biosensor was developed to probe the influence of curvature on sorting. This biosensor mimics large, two-dimensional membranes in dynamic equilibrium, achieves high spatial resolution between curvature and molecules of interest, and has high sensitivity, enough for single particle detection. The biosensor consists of continuous supported lipid bilayer formed over nanoparticles (40 to 200 nm diameter) deposited on a glass substrate. The nanoparticles determine the extent of curvature. This biosensor is the first to observe large-scale 2-dimensional diffusion of biomolecules on a supported lipid …

Human Action Recognition Via Fused Kinematic Structure And Surface Representation, Salah R. Althloothi Aug 2013

Human Action Recognition Via Fused Kinematic Structure And Surface Representation, Salah R. Althloothi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human action recognition from visual data has remained a challenging problem in the field of computer vision and pattern recognition. This dissertation introduces a new methodology for human action recognition using motion features extracted from kinematic structure, and shape features extracted from surface representation of human body. Motion features are used to provide sufficient information about human movement, whereas shape features are used to describe the structure of silhouette. These features are fused at the kernel level using Multikernel Learning (MKL) technique to enhance the overall performance of human action recognition. In fact, there are advantages in using multiple types …

A Paleoenvironmental Investigation Of Eolian Influx In Lacustrine Sediments Of The Southern Rocky Mountain Region, Rebecca L. Brice Aug 2013

A Paleoenvironmental Investigation Of Eolian Influx In Lacustrine Sediments Of The Southern Rocky Mountain Region, Rebecca L. Brice

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Potential indications of long-term trends in paleoclimate, specifically winds, in the Southern Rocky Mountain region of the United States were tested using lacustrine sediment from South Blue Lake in the Wet Mountains of Colorado. This study builds upon existing eolian and lacustrine research, and investigates paleowind in a location not yet studied in this manner. Variability in sediment laminae, particle size, and mineralogy show similar patterns during the mid-Holocene warm period (ca. 5500 cal. yr BP - ca. 6000 cal. yr BP). These patterns indicate a warmer, drier, windier period that is contrasted by a less variable period in the …

Loops And Their Permutation Groups, Mark Greer Jun 2013

Loops And Their Permutation Groups, Mark Greer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation uses the connections between loops and their associated permutation groups to study certain varieties of loops. We first define a variety of loops generalizing commutative automorphic loops and show this new variety is power associative. We show a correspondence to Bruck loops of odd order and use this correspondence to give structural results for our new variety, which in turn hold for commutative automorphic loops. Next, we study a variety of loops that generalize both Moufang and Steiner loops. We extend on known results for Moufang loops and then extend two different doubling constructions for creating Moufang and …

Multiple Bounding Boxes Algorithm In Collision Detection And Its Performances In Sequential Vs Cuda Parallel Processing, Min Qi Jan 2013

Multiple Bounding Boxes Algorithm In Collision Detection And Its Performances In Sequential Vs Cuda Parallel Processing, Min Qi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The traditional method for detecting collisions in a 2D computer game uses a axisaligned bounding box around each sprite, and checks to determine if the bounding boxes overlap periodically. Using this single bounding box method may result in a large amount of pixel intersection tests, since a sprite may be composed of areas where the pixels are empty and the intersecting bounding box test results in false positives.

Our algorithm analysis shows that the optimal two or three bounding boxes is the best partition we can get for a reasonable time complexity. The results further show significantly diminishing returns for …

Reducing Communication Delay Variability For A Group Of Robots, Goncalo Martins Jan 2013

Reducing Communication Delay Variability For A Group Of Robots, Goncalo Martins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A novel architecture is presented for reducing communication delay variability for a group of robots. This architecture relies on using three components: a microprocessor architecture that allows deterministic real-time tasks; an event-based communication protocol in which nodes transmit in a TDMA fashion, without the need of global clock synchronization techniques; and a novel communication scheme that enables deterministic communications by allowing senders to transmit without regard for the state of the medium or coordination with other senders, and receivers can tease apart messages sent simultaneously with a high probability of success. This approach compared to others, allows simultaneous communications without …

X-Band Rapid-Scan Epr, Deborah Gale Mitchell Jan 2013

X-Band Rapid-Scan Epr, Deborah Gale Mitchell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The advantages of rapid-scan EPR relative to CW and pulse techniques for samples with long longitudinal relaxation time T1 (Ns0 defects in diamond, N@C60, and amorphous hydrogenated silicon), heterogeneous samples (crystalline 1:1 α,γ-bisdiphenylene-β-phenylallyl (BDPA):benzene), lossy samples (aqueous nitroxyl radicals), and transient radicals (5-tert-butoxycarbonyl-5-methyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (BMPO)-superoxide adduct) were studied.

For samples with long relaxation times, CW (continuous wave) EPR is challenging due to power saturation and distortions from passage effects. In rapid-scan EPR, the field is swept through resonance in a time that is short relative to T2. In rapid-scan EPR, the magnetic field is …

Seeded Propagation Of Tau Fibrils, Paul David Dinkel Jan 2013

Seeded Propagation Of Tau Fibrils, Paul David Dinkel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In various neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, Pick's disease, and corticobasal degeneration, the deposition of fibrils composed of misfolded tau protein is observed. Recent evidence suggests that tau fibrils transfer between cells and spread throughout the brain, underscoring the significance of fibril propagation.

Six tau isoforms exist in the adult human brain that can be grouped into 4-repeat (4R) tau and 3-repeat (3R) tau based on the presence or absence of the second of four microtubule binding repeats. We demonstrate in vitro that seeded fibril growth, a prerequisite for the spreading of the tau pathology, is crucially …

Mathematical Modeling And Analysis Of Asthma Stability And Severity, Arezoo Hanifi Jan 2013

Mathematical Modeling And Analysis Of Asthma Stability And Severity, Arezoo Hanifi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in the United States. Asthma affects about one in fifteen people. It affects children more than adults and blacks more than whites. People with asthma experience attacks of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. Asthma can be fatal and the costs for the disease (direct and indirect) are approximated to be tens of billions of dollars each year.

There is no cure for asthma. However; for most people if asthma is controlled well they can lead normal, active lives. Therefore asthma controllability is a main factor in clinical practice. In order …

Celestial Paleontology: The Legacy Of Dying Stars, Alexa Hodgson Hart Jan 2013

Celestial Paleontology: The Legacy Of Dying Stars, Alexa Hodgson Hart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In their death throes, stars dole out their atmospheric material to the interstellar medium in dramatic stellar winds and spectacular explosions. The details of this profound metamorphosis, from star to remnant, play a key role in the next generation of star formation as well as the energetic and chemical evolution of galaxies and the universe as a whole. Dying stars are thought to be the source of all of the nuclei heavier than iron in the universe, as well as more complex molecules, such as carbon chains, which form the backbone of life as we know it.

High mass Wolf-Rayet …

The X-Ray And Spectropolarimetric View Of Mass Loss And Transfer In Massive Binary Stars, Jamie Renae Lomax Jan 2013

The X-Ray And Spectropolarimetric View Of Mass Loss And Transfer In Massive Binary Stars, Jamie Renae Lomax

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The majority of massive stars are members of binary systems. In order to have a better understanding of their evolutionary pathways, the mass and angular momentum loss from massive binaries needs to be well understood. Self consistent explanations for their behavior need to be valid across many wavelength regimes in order to illuminate key phases of mass loss to completely determine how it affects their evolution. In this dissertation I present the results of X-ray and specropolarimetric studies on one Roche-lobe overflow binary (β Lyr) and two colliding wind binaries (V444 Cyg and WR 140).

In β Lyr a …

Oxide Semiconductors For Organic Opto-Electronic Devices, Ajaya Kanta Sigdel Jan 2013

Oxide Semiconductors For Organic Opto-Electronic Devices, Ajaya Kanta Sigdel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Development of transparent oxide semiconductors (TOS) from Earth-abundant materials is of great interest for cost-effective thin film device applications, such as solar cells, light emitting diodes (LEDs), touch-sensitive displays, electronic paper, and transparent thin film transistors. The need of inexpensive or high performance electrode might be even greater for organic photovoltaic (OPV), with the goal to harvest renewable energy with inexpensive, lightweight, and cost competitive materials. The natural abundance of zinc and the wide bandgap (~3.3 eV) of its oxide make it an ideal candidate.

In this dissertation, I have introduced various concepts on the modulations of various surface, interface …

The Removal Of Pharmaceuticals From Wastewater By Wet-Air Oxidation, Miao Sun Jan 2013

The Removal Of Pharmaceuticals From Wastewater By Wet-Air Oxidation, Miao Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ubiquitous occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments has raised concerns about potential adverse effects on aquatic ecology and human health. Certain pharmaceuticals have recently become a major focus of research to better understand the routes and persistence of these compounds once they enter into aquatic system.

In this research, two model compounds were selected to represent pharmaceuticals that have been identified by recent research as being persistent; specifically, these compounds were trimethoprim (TMP, a basic antibiotic) and gemfibrozil (GEM, an acidic lipid regulator). Treatment of synthetic wastewater that contained these drugs was accomplished using …
