Reeling In New Antibiotics: Synthesis And Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Of Zinc-Binding Clavanins From Styela Clava (Sea Squirt), Eduardo Badillo-Colberg
Honors Scholar Theses
Clavanins have been a quite rarely studied antimicrobial peptide (AMP) family. Though the data in the few studies published on the matter and in theoretical experimental data presented by the Wang lab in their peptide library creation [14], in that the members of this family could potentially be quite effective novel antimicrobial candidates. Among those that have been targets of studies, Clavanin A has been at the forefront of this endeavor of finding effective novel antimicrobial peptides[14]. In these aforementioned studies, Clavanin A has been shown to be quite effective against many different bacterial strains, which begs the question as …

Cancer is a disease that stems from genomic errors that are not corrected properly by cellular repair mechanisms. Errors are more likely to form when organisms are subjected to DNA damage by mutagenic compounds. 1-Nitropyrene, a nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (nitro-PAH), has been shown to be a potent mutagen that causes cancer. Nitro-PAHs can arise from diesel exhaust products in the environment. Out of all nitro-PAHs, 1-nitropyrene is found in largest quantities in the environment. This poses a great need to study its effects biochemically in order to address its toxicity in DNA. Other nitropyrene derivatives, including 1,6-dinitropyrene and 1,8-dinitropyrene, …
Methodology Development In Green Chemistry: Oxoammonium Salt Oxidations And Fluoroform Incorporation, Rebecca J. Wiles
Methodology Development In Green Chemistry: Oxoammonium Salt Oxidations And Fluoroform Incorporation, Rebecca J. Wiles
University Scholar Projects
Central to the advancement of small molecule synthesis is the ability to develop methodologies that reimagine well known chemistry in a new, environmentally friendly manner. In this thesis two central themes emerge: oxoammonium salt oxidations and trifluoromethyl incorporation using fluoroform gas. Several projects have been developed surrounding oxoammonium salt chemistry, which are featured by their mild conditions, ease of use, and the metal-free, recyclable nature of the oxidant. Trifluoromethylation using fluoroform gas finds its utility in the use of a potent greenhouse gas waste product as a benchtop reagent.
Green Chemistry As A Tool For Understanding The Toxic Substances Control Act: A Lecture Module For Undergraduate Students, Molly R. Blessing
Green Chemistry As A Tool For Understanding The Toxic Substances Control Act: A Lecture Module For Undergraduate Students, Molly R. Blessing
Honors Scholar Theses
The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) is the central form of chemical regulation existent in the United States today, yet scientists are often unaware or uncertain of its provisions. Violations of TSCA by unknowing chemists set industry and government unnecessarily at odds. A lecture on TSCA was developed for undergraduate students that uses the concept of green chemistry to promote interest and incentivize learning. Green chemistry methods are cleaner and less wasteful than traditional chemical ones, and many companies using them are at the forefront of technological innovation. The lecture explains both green chemistry and TSCA, includes company case studies, …

Preparation Of Organofluorine Compounds: Exploring Mono-, Di-, And Tri-Fluorination, Diandra M. Rudzinski
Preparation Of Organofluorine Compounds: Exploring Mono-, Di-, And Tri-Fluorination, Diandra M. Rudzinski
Master's Theses
Organofluorine compounds exhibit biological activity and have advantageous properties for drug design. Natural occurring fluorinated molecules are rare, demanding new synthetic methods for their preparation. A novel route to access trifluoromethyl ketones from Weinreb amide precursors is discussed. This is the first documented method for the use of the Ruppert-Prakash reagent, (trifluoromethyl)trimethylsilane, for the production of trifluoromethyl ketones from amide starting materials. This method is tolerant of aryl and alkyl substrates exhibited by their moderate to excellent yields. A discussion of the unusual reactivity of these amides, their selectivity for mono-trifluoromethylation, and other mono-, and di-fluorination attempts are reported.

Synthesis Of Half-Loaded Nitroimidazole Indocyanine Green Dyes Attached To Carbon Nanotubes, Courtney L. Stanford
Synthesis Of Half-Loaded Nitroimidazole Indocyanine Green Dyes Attached To Carbon Nanotubes, Courtney L. Stanford
Master's Theses
Indocyanine green dye is the only FDA approved NIR fluorescent dye that can be used in humans. 2-Nitroimidazoles are very effective radiosensitizers, have low cytotoxicity, and target hypoxic tissue. By coupling the two together, hypoxic tumors can be targeted and imaged. Previous work has been done to couple 2-nitroimidazole to both sides of the indocyanine green dye. This work focuses on expanding that concept to couple 2-nitroimidazole to only one side of the dye, thus allowing for the other end to be available to couple to another compound, generating a half loaded 2-nitroimidazole indocyanine green dye. In theory, this half-loaded …
Fluorescence Tagging Of Marine Low Molecular Weight Carboxylic Acids, Brian C. Gismervik
Fluorescence Tagging Of Marine Low Molecular Weight Carboxylic Acids, Brian C. Gismervik
Master's Theses
This thesis aims at the evaluation of the best amide bonding strategy that places a fluorescence aminomethyl coumarin tag onto a LMW organic acid in aqueous solution. A three-stage study was conducted. First, a suitable aminomethyl coumarin fluorophore was synthesized. Second, a library of acid-derivatized standards was synthesized for use in optimizing the anticipated HPLC separation of a mixture of LMW acids expected to be found in marine samples. Third, the aforementioned amide coupling strategies were screened to identify the most applicable method for our reaction conditions to the tagging of LMW organic acids in a large number of field …
The Synthesis Of A Homologous Series Of Alkyl Lumazines And Their Application To The Dispersion Of Carbon Nanotubes, William P. Kopcha
The Synthesis Of A Homologous Series Of Alkyl Lumazines And Their Application To The Dispersion Of Carbon Nanotubes, William P. Kopcha
Master's Theses
In this thesis, the synthesis of a series of alkyl lumazine surfactants (LCn) is reported. Their application to the dispersion of both CoMoCAT and HiPco single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is examined in detail and the thermal stability and chirality selection properties of dispersions made with these surfactants were compared both between themselves and with an alkyl flavin surfactant (FC12). Lumazine alkyl chain length exhibited some control over the quality and the quantity of SWNTs dispersed. LC10 was deemed most appropriate for comparison with FC12 based on considerations of solubility and nanotube individualization. …
