Climate Justice In The Anthropocene And Its Relationship With Science And Technology: The Importance Of Ethics Of Responsibility, Paolo Davide Farah, Alessio Lo Giudice
Climate Justice In The Anthropocene And Its Relationship With Science And Technology: The Importance Of Ethics Of Responsibility, Paolo Davide Farah, Alessio Lo Giudice
Connecticut Law Review
Climate change is a global phenomenon. Therefore, globalization is the necessary hermeneutical horizon to develop an analysis of the metamorphosis climate change could cause at a political, social, and economic level. Within this horizon, this Article shows how the relationship between the concept of the Anthropocene epoch and the request for justice allows for framing a climate-justice and intergenerational equity–focused political interpretation of the effects of climate change. In order to avoid reducing such an interpretation to merely an ideological critique of capitalism, the conception of climate justice needs to be grounded in a rational, ethical model. This Article proposes …
Supporting Dataset For Observed And Projected Global Warming Pressure On Coastal Hypoxia, Michael M. Whitney
Supporting Dataset For Observed And Projected Global Warming Pressure On Coastal Hypoxia, Michael M. Whitney
Department of Marine Sciences
This archive contains the supporting dataset for the Biogeosciences article “Observed and projected global warming pressure on coastal hypoxia” by Michael M. Whitney. The main objective of the article is studying global patterns exacerbating coastal hypoxia by analyzing linear trends in SST, surface oxygen capacity (saturation concentration), and (vertical-minimum) oxygen concentration. Observations from a satellite-derived SST global climate dataset are analyzed to provide a context of coastal SST and oxygen-capacity trends observed over the last four decades. New analysis of 21st century projections from the Community Earth System Model (CESM) Large Ensemble Project is completed for coastal areas. Observed and …
Climate Change Preparedness In The Insurance Sector, Daniel Fischler
Climate Change Preparedness In The Insurance Sector, Daniel Fischler
Honors Scholar Theses
Climate change is the inevitable consequence of human activity since the industrial revolution began centuries ago. Assuming humanity survives and adapts to this scenario, there will be significant impacts on the economy and business. Under these circumstances, the insurance sector in particular will face challenges as the frequency and severity of losses increase due to climate change related events. This paper aims to analyze various options for allowing insurance to maintain viability in this changing environment. The general issue for the future is premiums must be commensurate with climate change related risk in affected areas. As a result, certain coastal …
Assessing The Skill Of The Improved Treatment Of Riverine Freshwater In The Community Earth System Model Relative To A New Salinity Climatology, Qiang Sun, Michael M. Whitney, Frank O. Bryan, Yu-Heng Tseng
Assessing The Skill Of The Improved Treatment Of Riverine Freshwater In The Community Earth System Model Relative To A New Salinity Climatology, Qiang Sun, Michael M. Whitney, Frank O. Bryan, Yu-Heng Tseng
Department of Marine Sciences
Recent studies have explored the sensitivity of global ocean model simulations to the treatment of riverine freshwater and the representation of estuarine processes via an estuary box model (EBM) applied within CESM. This study builds on these efforts by assessing the model skill score relative to a new salinity climatology. The new climatology averages the original observational data of the World Ocean Database directly onto the CESM ocean-component tracer-grid cells without spatial interpolation, smoothing, or other gap-filling techniques to mitigate coastal ocean salinity bias present in the World Ocean Atlas. The mean squared error (MSE) for coastal upper ocean salinity …
Adapting To A Changing Climate: Local Drivers For Policy Response, Andrew J. Bilich
Adapting To A Changing Climate: Local Drivers For Policy Response, Andrew J. Bilich
Honors Scholar Theses
Responding to the present and looming effects of global climate change presents a challenging task for policymakers at all levels of governance. The outcomes of climate change do present serious adaptation problems for global policy makers, but the implications of climate change are more immediately experienced by local communities and policy makers. Historical policymaking models suggest that economic well-being is an influential driver in local policy adoption. This particular analysis explores the relationship between economic variables and the development of climate adaptation policies by Connecticut municipalities. To test the degree of interaction present, adaptation policy data in the form of …
Coastal Towns Adapt To Realities Of Climate Change, Christine Woodside
Coastal Towns Adapt To Realities Of Climate Change, Christine Woodside
Wrack Lines
The effects of climate change on the rate of sea level rise have hit the streets of every coastal town in Connecticut. The future will bring more waters creeping inland not only on the coast of New England, but around the world.
